Claims
- 1. An insert delivery system for use with an automated packaging machine, wherein the packaging machine comprises an infeed to convey a product to be packaged and a scoop assembly, comprising:
(a) a first insert card conveyor configured to present a first insert to an insert placer; and (b) a feeder mechanism that is disposed adjacent said insert card conveyor and insert placer and is configured to deliver the insert onto the scoop assembly.
- 2. The insert delivery system of claim 1, wherein the insert placer comprises an arm that cycles between an insert pick-up position and an insert drop-off position.
- 3. The insert delivery system of claim 2, wherein the arm comprises an insert holder that is adjacent the insert card conveyor and secures the insert when the arm is in the insert pick-up position and is adjacent the feeder mechanism and releases the insert when the arm is in the insert drop-off position.
- 4. The insert delivery system of claim 3, wherein the insert holder comprises a vacuum system.
- 5. The insert delivery system of claim 3, wherein the insert holder comprises an articulated gripper.
- 6. The insert delivery system of claim 3, further comprising a second insert card conveyor having a second insert, wherein the first and second insert card conveyors are configured to attain first and second positions such that in the first position, the first conveyor presents the insert to the insert placer and in the second position the second conveyor presents the second insert to the insert placer.
- 7. The insert delivery system of claim 6, further comprising a sensor wherein information from the sensor is used to move the first and second conveyors between the first and second positions.
- 8. The insert delivery system of claim 1, further comprising a plurality of insert card conveyors.
- 9. The insert delivery system of claim 1, wherein the first insert card conveyor is configured to deliver two-fold inserts.
- 10. The insert delivery system of claim 1, wherein the first insert card conveyor is configured to deliver three-fold inserts.
- 11. The insert delivery system of claim 1, wherein the automated packaging machine comprises an automatic bread loaf packager.
- 12. The insert delivery system of claim 1, wherein the insert is at least one member selected from the group consisting of envelopes having at least one enclosure, and packets of food product samples.
- 13. The insert delivery system of claim 1, wherein said packaging machine includes wrappers, each wrapper bearing a UPC bar code.
- 14. The insert delivery system of claim 13 wherein the wrappers are stacked upon a transparent support through which a UPC bar code reader is positioned to read the UPC bar codes on the wrappers and to convey the UPC bar code data to said insert placer.
- 15. An insert delivery system for use with an automated packaging machine, wherein the packaging machine comprises an infeed to convey a product to be packaged and a scoop assembly, comprising:
(a) a first insert card conveyor configured to present a first insert to an insert placer; and (b) a feeder mechanism, disposed adjacent said insert card conveyor and insert placer, and configured to receive said first insert from said insert placer; wherein the scoop assembly is adapted to cycle between a retracted position and a forward position, and the insert delivery system is configured so that the feeder mechanism delivers the insert onto the scoop assembly when the scoop assembly is in the retracted position.
- 16. The insert delivery system of claim 15, wherein said scoop assembly of said packaging machine includes a lower bread scoop having a horizontal surface which is configured to receive said insert and said product to be packaged.
- 17. The insert delivery system of claim 16, wherein the automated packaging machine further comprises an air-jet and vacuum chamber and wherein said horizontal surface contains air apertures which are connected to the air-jet and vacuum chamber via air lines.
- 18. The insert delivery system of claim 17, wherein said horizontal surface contains two sets of air apertures, each set of said air apertures is aligned in a straight line, and the straight lines are arranged parallel to each other.
- 19. The insert delivery system of claim 15, wherein said scoop assembly of said packaging machine includes:
(a) a lower bread scoop having a horizontal surface which is configured to receive said product to be packaged; and (b) a lower compartment that is disposed underneath said horizontal surface and is adapted to receive said insert.
- 20. The insert delivery system of claim 19, wherein said lower compartment further includes a plunger, said plunger being slidably coupled to the lower compartment and adapted to urge said insert out of a distal end of said lower compartment.
- 21. The insert delivery system of claim 15, further comprising a plurality of insert card conveyors.
- 22. An insert delivery system for use with an automated packaging machine, wherein the packaging machine comprises an infeed to convey a product to be packaged and a scoop assembly, comprising:
(a) a first insert card conveyor configured to present a first insert to an insert placer; and (b) a feeder mechanism, disposed adjacent said insert card conveyor and insert placer, and configured to receive said first insert from said insert placer; wherein said insert card conveyor, insert placer, and feeder mechanism are disposed adjacent and above a distal portion of said infeed, the scoop assembly is adapted to cycle between a retracted position and a forward position, and the insert delivery system is configured so that the feeder mechanism delivers the insert onto the scoop assembly when the scoop assembly is in the forward position.
- 23. The insert delivery system of claim 22, wherein said scoop assembly of said packaging machine includes a lower bread scoop having a horizontal surface which is configured to receive said insert and said product to be packaged.
- 24. The insert delivery system of claim 23, wherein the automated packaging machine further comprises an air-jet and vacuum chamber and wherein said horizontal surface contains air apertures which are connected to the air-jet and vacuum chamber via air lines.
- 25. The insert delivery system of claim 24, wherein said horizontal surface contains two sets of air apertures, each set of said air apertures is aligned in a straight line, and the straight lines are arranged parallel to each other.
- 26. The insert delivery system of claim 21, further comprising a plurality of insert card conveyors.
- 27. A method of including an insert with a product being automatically packaged, comprising the steps of:
(a) providing an automated packaging machine having an infeed conveyor and a scoop assembly; (b) providing an insert delivery system having:
(i) a first insert card conveyor configured to present a first insert to an insert placer; and (ii) a feeder mechanism to receive said first insert from said insert placer, wherein the insert delivery system is configured so that the feeder mechanism delivers the insert onto the scoop assembly; (c) advancing a product along the infeed conveyor; (d) operating a holder on the insert placer to secure the insert from the insert card conveyor; (e) moving the insert placer so that the holder is adjacent the feeder mechanism; (f) releasing the insert from the holder so that the insert is deposited on the feeder mechanism; (g) operating the feeder mechanism to deliver the insert onto the scoop assembly; (h) receiving the product on the scoop assembly; and (i) packaging the product and the insert.
- 28. The method of claim 27, further comprising the steps of:
providing a lower bread scoop, wherein said lower bread scoop includes a horizontal surface having air apertures that are connected to an air-jet and vacuum chamber; activating the vacuum through said air apertures to securely retain said insert once the insert has been deposited on said scoop; and activating the air-jet through said air apertures to release the insert from the scoop prior to packaging of the product and the insert.
- 29. The method of claim 27, wherein, prior to step (g), the scoop assembly is advanced into a forward position, and wherein step (g) is performed from a position that is adjacent to, and above, a distal portion of said infeed conveyor.
- 30. The method of claim 27, wherein step (g) is performed when the scoop assembly is in a retracted position.
- 31. The method of claim 27, further comprising:
providing a lower bread scoop having a horizontal surface which is configured to receive said product to be packaged; providing a lower compartment that is disposed underneath said horizontal surface and is adapted to receive said insert; in step (g), operating the feeder mechanism to deliver the insert onto said lower compartment; and prior to step (i), operating a plunger that is slidably coupled to the lower compartment to urge said insert out of a distal end of the lower compartment.
- 32. The method of claim 27, wherein the delivery system further comprises a second insert card conveyor having a second insert and wherein the first and second insert card conveyors are configured to attain first and second positions such that in the first position, the first conveyor presents the insert to the insert placer and in the second position the second conveyor presents the second insert to the insert placer, further comprising the step of moving the first and second conveyors from the first position to the second position and wherein the step of operating the holder comprises securing the second insert.
- 33. The method of claim 32, further comprising the step of sensing the product being packaged and wherein the step of moving the first and second conveyors is controlled in response to information obtained from the sensing step.
- 34. The method of claim 32, further comprising the step of folding the insert around the product prior to packaging the insert and product.
- 35. A method of including an insert with a loaf of bread being automatically packaged, comprising the steps of:
(a) providing an automated packaging machine having an infeed conveyor and a bread receiving scoop assembly having a lower bread scoop which includes a horizontal surface; (b) providing an insert delivery system having a first insert card conveyor configured to present a first insert to an insert placer, wherein the insert delivery system is configured so that the insert placer delivers the insert onto a feeder mechanism; (c) advancing the bread loaf along the infeed conveyor; (d) operating a holder on the insert placer to secure the insert from the insert card conveyor; (e) moving the insert placer so that the holder is adjacent the feeder mechanism; (f) releasing the insert from the holder so that the insert is deposited on the feeder mechanism; (g) delivering the insert from the feeder mechanism to the lower bread scoop; (h) retaining the insert securely on the horizontal surface by activating a vacuum underneath said surface; (i) depositing the bread loaf into the lower bread scoop on top of the insert; (j) deactivating the vacuum and activating a blow-off air jet from underneath the horizontal surface to separate the insert from the surface; and (k) pulling a wrapper over the bread loaf and the insert.
- 36. A method of including an insert with a loaf of bread being automatically packaged, comprising the steps of:
(a) providing an automated packaging machine having an infeed conveyor and a bread receiving scoop assembly having a lower bread scoop which includes a horizontal surface; (b) providing an insert delivery system having a first insert card conveyor configured to present a first insert to an insert placer, wherein the insert delivery system is configured so that the insert placer delivers the insert onto a feeder mechanism; (c) providing a lower compartment that is disposed underneath said horizontal surface and is adapted to receive said insert; (d) advancing the bread loaf along the infeed conveyor; (e) operating a holder on the insert placer to secure the insert from the insert card conveyor; (f) moving the insert placer so that the holder is adjacent the feeder mechanism; (g) releasing the insert from the holder so that the insert is deposited on the feeder mechanism; (h) delivering the insert from the feeder mechanism to the lower compartment; (i) advancing the scoop assembly into a forward position; (j) depositing the bread loaf into the lower bread scoop with the insert in the lower compartment; (k) operating a plunger that is slidably coupled to the lower compartment to urge said insert out of a distal end of the lower compartment; (l) depositing the bread loaf on top of the insert; and (m) pulling a wrapper over the bread loaf and the insert.
