Claims
- 1. An implant comprising:
a first component having a load bearing wall and a projecting peripheral rim, wherein a pocket is defined by said wall and said rim; an second component configured to be received in said pocket such that at least a portion of said second component is spaced from said load bearing wall.
- 2. An implant according to claim 1, said second component further comprising a distal bone-facing surface including a mounting feature.
- 3. An implant according to claim 1, said peripheral rim comprising a plurality of radial slots spaced about a distal circumference of said rim.
- 4. An implant according to claim 1, wherein a transition between said load bearing wall and said peripheral rim is radiused to prevent localized stress.
- 5. An implant according to claim 1, wherein said load bearing wall being resiliently deformable.
- 6. An implant according to claim 1, wherein said load bearing wall being resiliently deformable and wherein said portion of said second component spaced from said load bearing wall to prevent deflection of said reliantly deformable load bearing wall at a predetermined position.
- 7. An implant for installation into a portion of an articular surface, said implant comprising:
a shell component comprising a resiliently deformable load bearing-wall, said load bearing wall including an outer surface having a contour based on an original surface contour of an excised portion of said articular surface, and an inner component comprising a bone-facing surface configured to mate with an implant site created by said excised portion of said articular surface; wherein said inner component is disposed in said pocket of said shell component such that a said inner component is spaced apart from said load bearing wall of said shell component.
- 8. An implant comprising:
a bone-facing portion for mating with an implant site created by excising a portion of an articular surface; and a deflectable load bearing proximal surface portion.
- 9. An implant according to claim 8 wherein said proximal surface has a contour based on an original surface of said excised articular surface.
- 10. An implant according to claim 8 wherein said load bearing proximal surface is a proximal surface of a load bearing wall, said load bearing wall being generally unsupported about a central portion of said wall.
- 11. An implant according to claim 10 wherein said load bearing wall is only supported about a perimeter of said load bearing wall.
- 12. An implant comprising:
a first component having a resiliently deformable load bearing wall; a second component being at least partially spaced apart from said first component.
- 13. An implant according to claim 12, said second component further including a distal bone-facing surface including a mounting feature.
- 14. An implant according to claim 12, said resiliently deformable wall having a proximal surface having a contour based on an original surface contour of an excised portion of an articular surface.
- 15. An implant according to claim 12, wherein said first component includes a distally extending wall defining a cavity, and wherein said second component is sized to be at least partially received in said cavity.
- 16. An implant comprising:
a bone facing distal portion for mating with an implant site created by excising a portion of an articular surface; and a resiliently deflectable proximal load bearing wall.
- 17. An implant according to claim 16 wherein said load bearing wall has a contour based on an original contour of said articular surface.
- 18. An implant according to claim 12, wherein said first and second components being adapted to mate together; and wherein second component comprising stop features dimensioned to position said first component with respect to said second component.
- 19. An implant according to claim 12, wherein said space between said first and second component being filled with a compressible fluid material.
- 20. An implant according to claim 19, wherein said space between said first and second component being filled with a polymer material.
- 21. An implant according to claim 12, wherein resiliently deformable load bearing wall having a thickness dimensioned so that the stiffness thereof approximates the stiffness of a human femoral head.
