Claims
- 1. A housing with embedded window comprising:
a first molding portion; and a window member disposed between two first molding portions and sealed by a second molding portion residing between the window member and the first molding portions.
- 2. The housing of claim 1, wherein the first and second molding comprise different molding material.
- 3. The housing of claim 1, wherein the first molding includes a thermo-plastic material.
- 4. The housing of claim 1, wherein the second molding portion protrudes over a portion of the window member and first molding portion so as to attenuate shock loads and further seal the window member.
- 5. The housing of claim 1, wherein a melt-bond region is formed surrounding the perimeter of the window member between the first and second molding portions.
- 6. The housing of claim 1, wherein the window member is composed of one of a glass material and a plastic material.
- 7. The housing of claim 6, wherein the window member shape includes one of rectangular, round, and polygonal.
- 8. The housing of claim 1, wherein the window and the housing form a portion of a scanner.
- 9. The housing of claim 1, wherein the first and second molding portions are formed from three molds, first and second molds combine to form the first molding portion and the first and third molds combine to generate the second molding portion.
- 10. The housing of claim 9, wherein the first and second molds form two cavities physically separated from one another.
- 11. The housing of claim 10, wherein a first cavity is filled with a molding material and the second cavity receives and is bifurcated by the window member.
- 12. The housing of claim 11, wherein the second mold is removed and the third mold applied that includes a third cavity that when filled with a molding material protrudes over a portion of the window member and first molding portion so as to attenuate shock loads and further seal the window member.
- 13. A housing fabrication system comprising:
a means for generating a housing section from a first housing material; a means for inserting a window member in an aperture in the housing section; and a means for adding a second housing material between and around the perimeter of the housing section and the window member to seal the window member.
- 14. The system of claim 13, wherein the second housing material protrudes from the space between the housing section and the window member to further seal the window and provide impact resistance.
- 15. The system of claim 13, wherein a melt-bound region exists between the first and second housing materials.
- 16. A method of generating a housing with a window member disposed therein comprising:
positioning a first part and a second part in a mold configuration to form first and second physically separated cavities; filling the first cavity with a first molding material; inserting a window member into the second cavity; replacing the second mold part with a third mold part to form a second mold, the second mold including a third cavity; filling the third cavity with a second molding material that surrounds the perimeter of the window member to seal the window member.
- 17. The method of claim 16, further comprising heating the first molding material by the second molding material to create a melt-bond region therebetween.
- 18. The method of claim 17, wherein the melt-bond region surrounds the perimeter of the second molding material.
- 19. The method of claim 16, wherein replacing the second mold part with the third mold part is performed one of manually and automatically by an action of one of rotating and sliding platen.
- 20. The method of claim 16, wherein the first cavity is filled utilizing an injection process.
- 21. The method of claim 20, wherein the first cavity is injected with a thermo-plastic material.
- 22. The method of claim 16, wherein the first cavity is filled prior to inserting the window member into the second cavity.
- 23. The method of claim 16, wherein the window member is inserted after the filling of the first cavity.
- 24. The method of claim 16, wherein the first and second and/or the first and third parts are held together for a predetermined time by pressure from an injection-molding machine.
- 25. The method of claim 16, wherein the housing forms part of a scanner and/or display device.
