Various embodiments of the disclosure relate to a system and a method to determine an emotional and biophysiological state of a user. More particularly, the various embodiments of the present disclosure relate to a system and a method to accurately determine an emotional state of a user in real-time or near real-time for self-awareness, monitoring, and early intervention.
Typically, a large number of people of all ages, genders and circumstances suffer from stress and anxiety, thereby leading to physical and psychological health issues in people. Stress may be defined as an uncomfortable emotional experience accompanied by predictable biochemical, physiological and behavioral changes. In certain scenarios, long working hours, less physical work, increase in virtual connections, and a lack of real communications are major contributors for the physical and psychological health issues in people.
Currently, Electrocardiography (ECG) is the gold standard to determine heart rate and associated cardiac biophysiological parameters to estimate an end user's emotional state. However, ECG signals require multiple leads (contact points) on different parts of the body of the user to acquire the electrical activity, which may be a challenging and intrusive task. In addition, ECG signals may present a serious limitation in terms of continuous measurement of heart rate in a passive manner due to the continuous monitoring of participants and subsequent analysis of physiological responses.
In some scenarios, active user involvement in data collection for psychological state estimation may introduce conscious and subconscious biases. By passively collecting and logging of biophysiological data and signals, unbiased results are classified real-time into emotional categories of an individual user. Classified results are coupled with the user's prior emotions and experiences may offer behavioral insights that drive self-discovery and introspection. In addition, the collection and cognition of biophysiological data may allow providers to tailor their services and offerings to create hyper-personalized experiences that may aid in cultivating seamless interactions between users and service providers. Accordingly, there is a need for a system and a method to simplify end user management and preemptive treatment of emotional conditions and risks associated with interpersonal behavior.
A system and a method are described to provide a system and a method to determine an emotional state of a user in real-time or near real-time for self-awareness and early intervention as shown in, and/or described in connection with, at least one of the figures, as set forth more completely in the claims.
These and other features and advantages of the present disclosure may be appreciated from a review of the following detailed description of the present disclosure, along with the accompanying figures in which like reference numerals refer to like parts throughout.
The embodiments of the invention are illustrated by way of example, and not by way of limitation, in the figures of the accompanying drawings in which:
The following described implementations may be found in the disclosed system and method to determine an emotional state of a user. Exemplary aspects of the disclosure may include a system to determine an emotional state of a user in real-time or near real-time.
The disclosed system may be configured to determine and estimate emotional state of a user in real-time or near real-time. Thereby, the system may encourage user introspection and self-discovery to align emotional goals with quantifiable outcomes. The societal impacts of the disclosed system and method may be easier end user management and preemptive treatment of emotional conditions and risks associated with interpersonal behavior that may allow self-awareness and early intervention.
The present invention may use machine learning models for the classification of emotions. The present invention may provide the end users with a real-time understanding of their biophysiological state (past and present) and correlation of such state with environmental stimuli, which enables the end users to be data informed, as the end users create and achieve emotional goals.

At 204, data related to biophysiological signals (bio signals) may be collected. The data may be collected from the smart wearable device 102 to calibrate the system. The data collected may be divided in train, test and validation sets. The validation dataset may be used to test classifier performance and validation of the classifier. Further, with initial samples of the subject 112, the method for prediction of the emotional state may be validated. In accordance with an embodiment, modifications may be made by the system based on the samples of the subject 112.
The data may be collected under simulated conditions from a focus user group. In accordance with an embodiment, the group may comprise of large number of human subjects that are exposed to numerous audio-visual stimuli intended to invoke specific emotional responses over a specific time period. The data for the method may be collected from various subjects who are healthy and satisfy the age criteria. In accordance with an embodiment, the bio signals may be collected from different sites to include the regional variability.
For data collection, the smart wearable device 102 may be composed of a plurality of sensors. In accordance with an embodiment, the sensors may be placed in a wearable belt of the smart wearable device 102 that may be tightened with a velcro. In accordance with an embodiment, the sensor belt may be worn on a finger (such as, ring finger) to collect the bio signals. The smart wearable device 102 may be configured to capture the biophysiological signals using a prototype device of the smart wearable device 102 along with ancillary signals such as electrocardiogram (ECG) from an FDA-cleared instrument. The ancillary signals may be required to establish design-time correlation between the biophysiological signals of the smart wearable device 102 and a known standard. The sensor belt of the smart wearable device 102 may comprise an ECG sensor, SPO2 sensor, and GSR sensor that may record the heart rate, PPG signal and skin conductance. The cohort may be enrolled to match the initial target population demographics.
The cloud server 108 may be configured to receive calibration data for further analysis of the different emotions. Variability in the bio signals may be caused by different moods of the subjects. The subjects, such as the subject 112 may be shown videos related to different emotions in order to elicit an emotion and thereby changes in the corresponding biological signal may be noted. The emotions may correspond to, but not limited to, anger, fear, pleasure, sad, disgust and thrill. The emotional states, such as, happy and excited may be termed as positive while anger and sad states may be termed as negative emotional states. In accordance with an embodiment, after showing the video of a particular emotion, there will be display of neutral images to nullify the effect of the earlier video on the emotional state of the subjects. The calibration data may be analyzed for identification of the appropriate supervised and unsupervised learning models. Based on the identification of the appropriate supervised and unsupervised learning models, signal pre-processing, feature generation, and prediction model may be selected. Coefficients and parameters for the prediction model may also be calculated at the cloud server 106. The calibration of data may be verified using a hold-out dataset. Subsequent data may be captured from a smaller different cohort that is statistically equivalent to the original cohort. The calibration of the data may be done offline using a cloud server 108.
At 206, standard biophysiological signals may be extracted from sensors present in the smart wearable device 102. In accordance with an embodiment, SPO2 sensor of the smart wearable device 102 may be configured to find heart rate variability (HRV) and heart rate. PPG signal from the SPO2 sensor of the smart wearable device 102 may be used to determine heart rate and heart rate variability because the PPG signal may be collected from any part of the body where capillaries are found close to the skin surface of the subject 112. Moreover, no application of gel or any adhesive may be required for the PPG signals by the smart wearable device 102. A peak to peak interval may be calculated by calculating the difference between two peaks of a first derivative of the PPG signals. The peak to peak interval may correspond to RR interval in ECG signal which in turn measures the heart rate in PPM.
The heart rate variability may be defined as the power spectral density between two R-R peaks in an ECG signal. Similarly, the heart rate variability may be defined in PPG derivative signals as the corresponding peaks and the time series between them may be used to determine the HRV signal that may be called the PPI signal. Initially, the PPI signal may be interpolated using cubic spline method, in accordance with an embodiment. The resulting signal may be mean subtracted to remove the DC signal and then the signal is high pass filtered through a cut off frequency of 0.03 Hz to eliminate the low frequency disturbances. The signal may correspond to the equivalent HRV signal and analyzed using Fast Fourier Transform (FFT) method to find power in different frequency bands.
At 208, accuracy of extracted biophysiological signals may be validated. In accordance with an embodiment, the cloud server 108 may be configured to validate the extracted biophysiological signals. During data collection, the smart wearable device 102 may also incorporate ECG sensor along with SPO2 sensor. The ECG sensor may be configured to validate the extraction of heart rate variability and heart rate from the SPO2 sensor output. The same features extracted from the ECG and PPG signals may be compared for the variations and differences in the mean and standard deviations. Based on verification of the PPG signal to be used as an alternative to the ECG signal, the SPO2 sensor may be used in the smart wearable device 102. In accordance with an embodiment, the equivalence of ECG and PPG signals may be validated based on evaluation of classification by features derived from ECG and PPG signals. The ECG signal may be replaced with the PPG signal based on classification accuracy and other statistical measures of the classification.
At 210, features from biophysiological signals may be extracted. In accordance with an embodiment, the cloud server 108 may be configured to extract the features. The features may be extracted to identify different emotions from the bio signals. Additional features and spectral transformations are done at the cloud server 108 to determine features that may be used in classification of emotional state of the subject 112.
The data from the biophysiological sensors of the smart wearable device 102 may be pre-processed to remove noise, motion artifacts, point discontinuities, jump discontinuities, point outliers, and other effects that can cause errors in emotion classification. The cloud server 108 may be configured to preprocess the data from biophysiological sensors. In accordance with an embodiment, the data may also be calculated through a window that can be normalized using a Hamming or a Hanning function. In accordance with an embodiment, the data may further be transformed into the frequency domain through the use of a Fourier transform or a Wavelet transform. The data may be developed into features that are used for machine learning to estimate emotional state.
The bio signals collected from the smart wearable device 102 are multiple. However, for classification of the emotions, suitable features may be extracted from the bio signals. The bio signals may be filtered. The filtered signals may be processed to extract the features from the heart rate variability signal extracted from the PPG signal. The features extracted may correspond to, but not limited to, the coefficients of the Fast Fourier transform, wavelet transform, and power in different energy bands. Statistical parameters may be extracted from the HRV signal over a fixed period (say every 10 seconds). The statistical parameter may correspond to mean, variance, standard deviation, kurtosis, skewness, maximum response, proportion of negative samples in the derivative versus all samples of PPG signal and skin conductance. In accordance with an embodiment, non-linear signal processing techniques such as using fractals, higher order spectra analysis, and turbulence analysis may also be used for signal processing. In accordance with an embodiment, feature selection or dimension reduction methods like PCA, ICA may be applied to determine the important features and thereby the sensors. Therefore redundant features may be avoided. As a result, feature size may be reduced and classification time may be reduced. Recognizing a suitable classifier which gives high classification accuracy and requires less time and space may be done through rigorous experiments. Various classifier models and features may be used to classify the emotions. The classifier that satisfies the criteria of computation time, memory and accuracy may be used in final analysis and corresponding feature set will be used in feature extraction.
In accordance with an embodiment, feature extraction may have some preprocessing of the signals like filtering and amplitude normalization. some of the features may include power spectral density estimation in different frequency bands, differences in energy between different frequency bands, correlation analysis, linear transformation using linear signal processing techniques and non-linear methods for feature extraction like finding fractals, higher order spectral analysis using bispectrum or trispectrum.
Features derived from various methods will be used alone or combined using score level or feature level fusion methods. The features may be used to train a classier. The classifier may have a support vector machine classifier or Gaussian Mixture model (GMM) classifier or neural networks. The selection of the final classifier will be based on their ability to classify the signals in correct emotion class. The classifier parameters, such as kernel function and their parameters in SVM and the type of neural networks and their kernel functions will be varied to find the best possible choice of the classifier model. The performance of the possible choice of classifier will be checked by applying the validation data set on the classifier and evaluating their performance using sensitivity and selectivity parameters.
