Claims
- 1. A system for assisting an operator in manually sorting mail, comprising:a headset including a microphone which translates a verbal statement from the operator into speech signals and a wireless transmitter wirelessly transmits speech signals; and a computer workstation at a location remote, during operation, from the operator, said workstation including: (a) a receiver which receives the speech signals wirelessly transmitted from the wireless transmitter in the headset, (b) a speech recognition unit which recognizes addressee information corresponding to an item of mail from the speech signals, (c) a processor; (d) a control program which instructs the processor to search a database to locate at least one record matching the addressee information recognized by said speech recognition unit, and (e) an output unit which outputs to the operator destination information included in the at least one record matching the addressee information.
- 2. The system of claim 1, wherein said headset includes a receiver and a speaker circuit, and wherein said output unit includes a transmitter for wirelessly transmitting said destination information to the receiver in said headset, said speaker circuit outputting audible signals to the operator corresponding to said destination information.
- 3. The system of claim 1, wherein the output unit of said computer workstation includes a display which displays said destination information to the operator.
- 4. The system of claim 1, further comprising:a display at a location where the operator manually sorts mail, said display in communication with the processing unit of said computer workstation for displaying said destination information to the operator.
- 5. The system of claim 1, further comprising:a printer which prints a label indicative of said destination information corresponding to said item of mail.
- 6. The system of claim 5, wherein said processing unit sends control signals to the printer instructing the printer to automatically print the label when said output unit outputs said destination information to the operator.
- 7. The system of claim 1, further comprising:reporting means for tracking at least one of operator productivity and sorting volume statistics.
- 8. The system of claim 1, further comprising:import means for importing said addressee information from a database connected to said computer workstation through a network.
- 9. The system of claim 1, wherein the wireless transmitter in said headset is an RE transmitter.
- 10. The system of claim 1, wherein said computer workstation is located in a first room and said headset is located in a second room.
- 11. The system of claim 10, wherein said first room and said second room are on different floors of a building.
- 12. The system of claim 1, wherein the processing unit communicates with said database through a network.
- 13. A system for assisting an operator in manually sorting mail, comprising:a headset including a microphone which translates a verbal statement from the operator into speech signals and a wireless transmitter which wirelessly transmits the speech signals; and a computer workstation including: (a) a receiver which receives the speech signals wirelessly transmitted from the transmitter in the headset, (b) a speech recognition unit which recognizes addressee information corresponding to an item of mail from the speech signals, (c) a processor which searches a database for at least one record matching the addressee information recognized by said speech recognition unit, and (d) an output unit which outputs to the operator destination information included in the at least one record matching the addressee information, wherein said headset includes a receiver and a heads-up display, and wherein said output unit includes a transmitter which wirelessly transmits said destination information to the receiver in said headset, said heads-up display displaying said destination information to the operator.
- 14. A method for sorting items of mail, comprising:providing an operator with a headset that includes a microphone; converting a verbal statement spoken into the microphone into speech signals; wirelessly transmitting the speech signals from the headset to a computer workstation remotely located from the operator; recognizing addressee information corresponding to an item of mail from the speech signals; searching a database to find at least one record that at least substantially matches said addressee information; and outputting destination information included within the at least one record to the operator.
- 15. The method of claim 14, wherein said outputting step includes:wirelessly transmitting said destination information to a receiver in the headset.
- 16. The method of claim 15, further comprising:outputting audible signals corresponding to said destination information through a speaker in the headset.
- 17. The method of claim 14, wherein said outputting step includes:displaying said destination information to the operator.
- 18. The method of claim 14, further comprising:printing a label indicative of said destination information corresponding to said item of mail.
- 19. The method of claim 18, wherein said printing step is performed automatically when said outputting step is performed.
- 20. The method of 14, further comprising:tracking at least one of operator productivity and sorting volume statistics based on information derived from said computer workstation.
- 21. The method of claim 14, wherein said addressee information is stored in a database connected to said computer workstation via a network, said method further including a step of importing said addressee information through said network.
- 22. A method for sorting items of mail, comprising:providing an operator with a headset that includes a microphone; converting a verbal statement spoken into the microphone into speech signals; wirelessly transmitting the speech signals from the headset to a computer workstation; recognizing addressee information corresponding to an item of mail from the speech signals; searching a database to find at least one record that at least substantially matches said addressee information; outputting destination information included within the at least one record to the operator; and displaying said destination information on a heads-up display of the headset.
- 23. A method for sorting items of mail, comprising:providing an operator with a headset that includes a microphone; converting a verbal statement spoken into the microphone into speech signals; wirelessly transmitting the speech signals from the headset to a computer workstation; recognizing addressee information corresponding to an item of mail from the speech signals; searching a database to find at least one record that at least substantially matches said addressee information; and outputting destination information included within the at least one record to the operator, wherein in said transmitting step, the speech signals are wirelessly transmitted as RF signals.
- 24. A method for sorting items of mail, comprising:providing an operator with a headset that includes a microphone; converting a verbal statement spoken into the microphone into speech signals; wirelessly transmitting the speech signals from the headset to a computer workstation; recognizing addressee information corresponding to an item of mail from the speech signals; searching a database to find at least one record that at least substantially matches said addressee information; and outputting destination information included within the at least one record to the operator, wherein said computer workstation is located in a first room and the operator manually sorts mail in a second room.
- 25. The method of claim 24, wherein said first room and said second room are on different floors of a building.
- 26. A kit for assisting an operator in manually sorting mail, comprising:a headset including a microphone for translating a verbal statement from the operator into speech signals and an RF transmitter for wirelessly transmitting the speech signals; a receiving unit adapted for connection to a computer workstation; and a computer-readable medium storing an application program for execution by a processor of said computer workstation, said application program including: (a) a first code section which instructs the processor of said computer workstation to search a database for at least one record that at least substantially matches address information spoken by the operator into the headset, and (b) a second code section which controls output of destination information derived from the at least one record in said database to the operator.
- 27. The kit of claim 26, wherein the second code section of said application program instructs the processor of said computer workstation to wirelessly transmit said destination information to the headset.
- 28. The kit of claim 27, wherein the headset includes a speaker for outputting audible signals corresponding to said destination information wirelessly transmitted to said headset.
- 29. The kit of claim 26, wherein the second code section of said application program instructs the processor of the workstation to output said destination information to a display terminal connected to said computer work station.
- 30. The kit of claim 26, wherein said application program includes:a third code section for controlling the processor of said workstation to print a label indicative of said destination information.
- 31. The kit of 26, wherein the application program includes:a third code section for tracking at least one of operator productivity and sorting volume statistics.
- 32. A kit for assisting an operator in manually sorting mail, comprising:a headset including a microphone for translating a verbal statement from the operator into speech signals and a transmitter for wirelessly transmitting the speech signals; a receiving unit adapted for connection to a computer workstation; and a computer-readable medium storing an application program for execution by a processor of said computer workstation, said application program including: (a) a first code section which instructs the processor of said computer workstation to search a database for at least one record that at least substantially matches address information spoken by the operator into the headset, and (b) a second code section which controls output of destination information derived from the at least one record in said database to the operator, wherein the headset includes a heads-up display for displaying the destination information output from the at least one record in said database.
- 33. A system for assisting an operator in sorting mail, comprising:a headset including a microphone which translates a verbal statement from the operator into speech signals and a wireless transmitter which wirelessly transmits the speech signals; and a computer workstation at a location remote, during operation, from the operator, said workstation including: (a) a receiver which receives the speech signals wirelessly transmitted from the wireless transmitter in the headset, (b) speech recognition means for recognizing addressee information corresponding to an item of mail from the speech signals, (c) processing means for searching a database to locate at least one record which matches the addressee information recognized by said speech recognition means, and (d) output means which outputs to the operator destination information included in the at least one record matching the addressee information.
