Claims
- 1. A method of treating a necrotic section of bone, comprising the steps of:
drilling at least one channel in said bone, wherein said at least one channel has a distal end that terminates proximate said necrotic section; inserting a volume of bone growth inducing compound into said at least one channel; biasing said volume of bone growth inducing compound toward said distal end of said at least one channel, wherein said bone growth inducing compound permeates said necrotic section of bone.
- 2. The method according to claim 1, wherein said step of biasing said volume of bone growth inducing compound toward said distal end of said at least one channel includes advancing a plug into each said channel wherein said plug compresses said bone growth inducing compound toward said distal end.
- 3. The method according to claim 2, wherein said plug is a screw that engages said channel with a thread.
- 4. The method according to claim 3, wherein said screw is made of bone.
- 5. The method according to claim 3, wherein said screw is made of an inert metal, selected from a group consisting of tantalum, titanium, chrome-cobalt, stainless steel and alloys thereof.
- 6. The method according to claim 2, further including the step of tapping a thread within said at least one channel proximate said distal end of said at least one channel.
- 7. The method according to claim 1, wherein said step of drilling at least one channel in said bone includes drilling into said bone from an entry point and drilling multiple channels toward said necrotic section of bone, wherein each of said channels commonly diverge from said entry point.
- 8. The method according to claim 1, wherein said necrotic section of bone is in a femoral head and said at least one channel is drilled through the femoral neck into said femoral head.
- 9. The method according to claim 1, further including the step of filling said at least one channel with a fill material after said screw has been inserted into said at least one channel.
- 10. The method according to claim 9, wherein said fill material contains bone chip and demineralized bone paste.
- 11. The method according to claim 1, wherein said bone growth inducing compound includes bone morphogenetic protein, growth factors and angiogenic factors
- 12. A system for treating a section of necrotic bone, said system comprising:
a drill bit for drilling a channel toward said necrotic section of bone; a volume of bone growth inducing compound to insert in said channel proximate said necrotic section of bone; and a plug for isolating said bone growth inducing compound in said channel.
- 13. The system according to claim 12, wherein said plug compresses said bone growth inducing compound and biases said bone growth inducing compound toward said necrotic section of bone.
- 14. The system according to claim 12, further including a tap for tapping threads into at least a portion of said channel drilled by said drill bit.
- 15. The system according to claim 14, wherein said plug is a screw that engages the threads created in said channel by said tap.
- 16. The system according to claim 12, further including a volume of fill material for filling said channel after the insertion of said plug.
- 17. A method of treating osteonecrosis in the femur head, comprising the steps of:
drilling at least one channel into the subchondral bone of the femoral head through the neck of the femur, wherein each channel does not pierce the femoral head; advancing supports into said at least one channel, wherein said supports structurally reinforce said femoral head.
- 18. The method according to claim 17, wherein further including the steps of:
placing a volume of bone growth inducing compound into each channel; compressing said bone growth inducing compound in each said channel with said supports, wherein said bone growth inducing compound is forced into said subchondral bone of the femur head.
- 19. The method according to claim 18, wherein each of said supports is a screw that engages said channel with a thread.
- 20. The method according to claim 17, wherein said step of drilling at least on channel includes drilling into the subchondral bone from an entry point and drilling multiple channels toward the subchondral bone, wherein each of said channels commonly diverge from said entry point.
