Claims
- 1. An appliance comprising:an infra red (IR) port; a display means; a search animation module executed by a processor residing in the appliance that generates a search animation for displaying on the display means, the search animation further comprising: a first metaphoric icon; and a plurality of images resembling waves aligned in a single axial direction, each wave image moving progressively away from the first metaphoric icon to indicate that the appliance is attempting to establish communication between the IR port and an external device having an IR port; and a search completion code segment which indicates that the appliance and the external device are communicating by stopping movement of each one of the waves.
- 2. The appliance of claim 1, wherein the first metaphoric icon resembles a light emitting diode (LED) such that the search animation resembles the LED emanating waves.
- 3. The appliance of claim 1, where in the first metaphoric icon resembles a tower such that the search animation resembles the tower emanating waves.
- 4. The appliance of claim 1, wherein the search completion code segment ends display of the search animation upon establishment of communication between the IR port and the external device.
- 5. The appliance of claim 1, wherein each one of the plurality of images resembling waves increases in length as each one of the images resembling waves moves away from the first metaphonc icon.
- 6. The appliance of claim 1, wherein ends of each wave define an angle indicating a maximum allowable cone angle, the maximum allowable cone angle defining a range of direction that the IR port must be pointed so that the IR port is aligned with the external device such that communication is established with the external device.
- 7. The appliance of claim 6, further comprising an error utility module executed by the processor, wherein the error utility module generates an error notification animation indicating that the appliance is positioned outside the maximum allowable cone angle for the IR port.
- 8. The appliance of claim 7, wherein the error notification animation provides a textual message specifying repositioning of the appliance such that the appliance is positioned so that the external device is aligned within the maximum allowable cone angle.
- 9. The appliance of claim 1, further comprising a connection interrupted animation for displaying on the display means when communication between the appliance and the external device is interrupted, the connection interrupted animation indicating that communication is to be reestablished according to the search animation generated by the search animation module.
- 10. The appliance of claim 1, wherein the appliance is a hand-held image capture appliance.
- 11. The appliance of claim 1, further comprising a progress animation module executed by the processor, the progress animation module generating a bar graph animation for displaying on the display means, the bar graph animation indicating an amount of information in relation to a total amount of information that the appliance is sending to the external device.
- 12. A method for establishing communication between an appliance and an external device, comprising the steps of:establishing communication between an infra red (IR) port and the external device having an IR port; displaying a search animation having a first metaphoric icon and a plurality of images resembling waves aligned in a single axial direction; moving each wave image progressively away from the first metaphoric icon to indicate that the appliance is attempting to establish communication with the external device; and ending display of the search animation upon establishment of communication between the appliance and the external device.
- 13. The method of claim 12, further including the step of beginning the steps of displaying the first metamorphic icon and moving each wave image progressively away from the first metaphoric icon when the appliance begins establishing communication with the external device.
- 14. The method of claim 12, further comprising the step of increasing the length of each wave image as each wave image moves progressively away from the first metaphoric icon.
- 15. The method of claim 14, further comprising the step of indicating a maximum allowable cone angle by positioning ends of each wave image such that the angle is apparent, the angle defining a range of direction that the appliance is pointed so as to be aligned with the external device such that communication is established with the external device.
- 16. The method of claim 15, further comprising the step of displaying an error notification animation indicating that the appliance is positioned outside the range of direction defined by the angle.
- 17. The method of claim 16, further comprising the step of displaying a textual message specifying repositioning of the appliance such that the appliance is positioned so that the external device is aligned within the range of direction defined by the angle.
- 18. The method of claim 17, further comprising the step of fixing the position of each one of the waves to indicate that the appliance and the external device are communicating.
- 19. A computer readable medium having a program for establishing communication between an appliance and an external device, the program comprising:logic configured for displaying a search animation having a first metaphoric icon and a plurality of images resembling waves aligned in a single axial direction; logic configured for moving each wave image progressively away from the first metaphoric icon to indicate that the appliance is attempting to establish communication between an appliance communication port and the external device; logic configured for ending display of the search animation upon establishment of communication between the appliance and the external device; and logic configured for increasing the length of each wave image as each wave image moves progressively away from the first metaphoric icon, and logic configured for positioning ends of each wave image such that a maximum allowable cone angle is apparent, the maximum allowable cone angle defining a range of direction that the appliance communication port is pointed so as to be aligned with the external device such that communication is established with the external device.
