Claims
- 1. In a system having a plurality of tool-holding carriages movably mounted in respective positions along an elongate guide member, apparatus for variably positioning said carriages along said guide member, said apparatus comprising:
- (a) drive means for selectively moving each of said carriages longitudinally along said guide member throughout a respective maximum range of movement of each carriage;
- (b) respective flexible cables connected to respective ones of said carriages for conducting electrical and fluid power to each of said carriages, each cable having respective first and second portions extending in a longitudinal direction along said guide member in substantially parallel relation to each other and spaced apart from each other in a direction transverse to said longitudinal direction, the respective first portions of said respective cables being positioned in substantially parallel relationship to each other in a first transverse order, and the respective second portions of said respective cables being in substantially parallel relationship to each other in a second transverse order opposite to said first transverse order, so that the first and second portions of one cable are separated by a first transverse spacing and the first and second portions of each of the other cables are separated by different transverse spacings progressively greater than said first transverse spacing; and
- (c) each of said carriages having means defining an opening in the carriage through which said first and second portions of said cables extend in said longitudinal direction.
- 2. In a system having a plurality of tool-holding carriages movably mounted in respective positions along an elongate guide member, apparatus for variably positioning said carriages along said guide member, said apparatus comprising:
- (a) drive means for selectively moving each of said carriages independently of one another longitudinally along said guide member throughout a respective maximum range of movement of each carriage;
- (b) respective flexible cables connected to respective ones of said carriages for conducting electrical and fluid power to each of said carriages, each cable having respective first and second portions extending in a longitudinal direction along said guide member in substantially parallel relation to each other and spaced apart from each other in a direction transverse to said longitudinal direction, the respective first portions of said respective cables being positioned in substantially parallel relationship to each other in a first transverse order, and the respective second portions of said respective cables being positioned in substantially parallel relationship to each other in a second transverse order opposite to said first transverse order, so that the first and second portions of one cable are separated by a first transverse spacing and the first and second portions of each of the other cables are separated by different transverse spacings progressively greater than said first transverse spacing;
- (c) the respective first portions of said cables having respective ends operably connected to respective ones of said carriages, the first portion of the cable having said first transverse spacing having a first length and the first portions of each of the other cables having respective lengths which are progressively smaller than said first length as said transverse spacings of said other cables become progressively greater.
- 3. The apparatus of claim 2, including an enclosure surrounding said first and second portions of said cables and surrounding said carriages.
