Claims
- 1. A dosage form for the delayed-delivery of a drug to a fluid environment of use, wherein the dosage form comprises:
(a) a first composition comprising a dose of drug; (b) a second composition that imbibes fluid and expands, whereby the second composition pushes the first composition from the dosage form; (c) a wall that surrounds the first and second compositions, said wall comprising a composition permeable to the passage of fluid present in the environment of use; (d) at least one exit means in the wall for delivering he drug from the dosage form; and wherein the dosage form is characterized by: (e) a subcoat for the delayed-delivery of drug, which subcoat comprises a hydroxyalkylcellulose that surrounds the first and second composition and is positioned between the wall and the first and second composition.
- 2. The dosage form for the delayed-delivery of the drug according to claim 1, wherein the subcoat comprises hydroxyethylcellulose.
- 3. The dosage form for the delayed-delivery of the drug according to claim 1, wherein the subcoat comprises hydroxyethylcellulose and the drug is verapamil.
- 4. The dosage form for the delayed-delivery of the drug according to claim 1, wherein the drug is a member selected from the group consisting of a calcium channel blocker and its pharmaceutically acceptable derivatives.
- 5. The dosage form for the delayed-delivery of the drug according to claim 1, wherein the subcoat provides a delayed-drug period from 30 minutes up to 7.0 hours.
- 6. The dosage form for the delayed-delivery of the drug according to claim 1, wherein the subcoat comprises hydroxyethylcellulose and the drug is a member selected from the group consisting of nifedipine, isradipine, nilvadipine, flunarizine, nimodipine, diltiazem, nicardipine, nitredipine, nisoldipine, felodipine, amlodipine, cinnarizine, and fendiline.
- 7. The dosage form for the delayed-delivery of the drug according to claim 1, wherein the subcoat comprises hydroxyethylcellulose and wherein the drug is a member selected from the group consisting of ramipril, fosinopril, altiopril, benazepril, libenzapril, alacepril, cialzapril, cilazaprilat, perinodopril, zofenopril, enalapril, lisinopril, imidapril, spriapril, rentiapril, captopril, delapril, olindapril, indolapril and quinapril.
- 8. The dosage form for the delayed-delivery of the drug according to claim 1, wherein the subcoat comprises hydroxypropylcellulose.
- 9. The dosage form for the delayed-delivery of the drug according to claim 1, wherein an external, instant dose of drug is in contact with the wall.
- 10. An improvement in a method for administering a drug to the gastrointestinal tract of a patient, wherein the method comprises:
(A) admitting a dosage form into the gastrointestinal tract of the patient, said dosage form comprising:
(1) a wall comprising a member selected from the group consisting of cellulose acetate, cellulose diacetate, and cellulose triacetate, which wall surrounds: (2) a compartment; (3) a first composition comprising a dose of drug in the compartment; (4) a second composition in the compartment that imbibes fluid and expands, whereby the second composition pushes the first composition from the compartment; (5) at least one exit means in the wall for delivering the drug from the compartment; said dosage form characterized by: (6) a subcoat for the delayed-delivery of drug, which subcoat comprises a hydroxyethylcellulose that surrounds the first and second composition and is positioned between the wall and the first and second composition; and wherein the improvement comprises: (B) delaying the delivery of drug from the dosage form to provide delayed therapy.
- 11. The improvement in the method for administering the drug to the gastrointestinal tract of a patient according to claim 10, wherein the dosage form delivers the drug after a 2 hour drug-free interval.
- 12. The improvement in the method for administering the drug to the gastrointestinal tract of a patient according to claim 10, wherein the dosage form is administered at bedtime.
- 13. The improvement in the method for administering the drug to the gastrointestinal tract of a patient according to claim 10, wherein the dosage form administers drug during the night hours.
- 14. The improvement in the method for administering the drug to the gastrointestinal tract of a patient according to claim 10, wherein the drug is verapamil.
- 15. The improvement in the method for administering the drug to the gastrointestinal tract of a patient according to claim 10, wherein the subcoat comprises hydroxyethylcellulose.
- 16. The improvement in the method for administering the drug to the gastrointestinal tract of a patient according to claim 10, wherein the subcoat comprises hydroxyethylcellulose and the drug is verapamil.
- 17. The improvement in the method for administering the drug the gastrointestinal tract of a patient according to claim 10, wherein the wall comprises an exterior surface that faces the gastrointestinal tract, which wall is coated with an instant release composition comprising verapamil.
- 18. The improvement in the method for administering the drug to the gastrointestinal tract according to claim i, wherein the dosage form delays the delivery of the drug for 30 minutes up to 4.5 hours.
