Claims
- 1. Apparatus for improving the driving behavior of an automotive vehicle having front and rear axles, each axle having a plurality of wheels, each wheel having a brake, said apparatus comprising:
- means for measuring a rotational speed of each wheel, individually, a vehicle yaw rate and a vehicle lateral acceleration;
- an anti-lock braking system responsive to the rotational speeds for providing first preset pressure values for controlling each brake, individually, to prevent the wheels from locking during braking;
- a traction slip control system responsive to the rotational speeds for providing second preset pressure values for controlling each brake, individually, to prevent the wheels from slipping during acceleration;
- brake effort proportioning means for providing third preset pressure values for distributing braking pressure between the wheels of the front axle and the wheels of the rear axle; and
- yawing moment control means responsive to the vehicle lateral acceleration and the vehicle yaw rate for providing fourth preset pressure values used to control each brake, individually, during cornering, to avoid application to the vehicle of an unbalanced moment which would cause the vehicle to understeer or oversteer,
- said antilock braking system, said traction slip control system, said brake effort proportioning means and said yawing moment control system all operating independently of one another.
- 2. Apparatus according to claim 1, further comprising prioritizing means responsive to the first, second, third and fourth, preset pressure values and a brake pedal pressure applied by a driver of the vehicle, for applying criteria to determine a desired brake pressure that is to be applied to each wheel, individually, such that a turning behavior and a braking behavior of the vehicle conform to steering and braking inputs from the driver.
- 3. Apparatus according to claim 2, wherein the prioritizing means include means for either:
- (1) determining the desired pressure applied to each brake, individually, in accordance with one of the group consisting of the first, second, third, and fourth pressure values and the brake pedal pressure, or
- (2) determining the desired brake pressure applied to each brake, individually, by superimposing two sets of brake pressures, each of the two sets of brake pressures being selected in accordance with a respectively different one of the group consisting of the first, second, third, and fourth pressure values and the brake pedal pressure.
- 4. Apparatus according to claim 2, wherein the prioritizing means determines the desired brake pressures by reducing the desired pressure on at least one brake, based on one of the group consisting of the first, second, third, and fourth pressure values, before increasing the desired pressure on the brakes based on a further one of the group consisting of the first, second, third, and fourth pressure values.
- 5. Apparatus according to claim 2, wherein:
- the vehicle has an engine having a driving torque, and
- said traction slip control system and said yawing moment control system each include means for calculating preset values for the driving torque of the engine.
- 6. Apparatus according to claim 5, wherein said prioritizing means calculates a desired torque for the engine based on said preset driving torque values of said traction slip control system and said yawing moment control system.
- 7. Apparatus according to claim 1, wherein said yawing moment control system is switched off, but said antilock-braking system, traction slip control system and brake effort proportioning system continue operating, if said measuring means is operating in a condition in which either the yaw rate or the lateral acceleration cannot be measured.
- 8. Apparatus for improving the driving behavior of an automotive vehicle having an engine and front and rear axles, each axle having a plurality of wheels, each wheel having a brake, said apparatus comprising:
- a traction slip control system that provides a first engine torque adjustment value for controlling the engine, to prevent the wheels from slipping during acceleration;
- yawing moment control means responsive to a plurality of input signals representing (1) vehicle lateral acceleration, (2) vehicle yaw rate, (3) a brake pedal pressure applied by a driver of the vehicle and (4) a steering angle input by the driver, for providing a second engine torque adjustment value used to control the engine during cornering, to avoid application to the vehicle of an unbalanced moment which would cause the vehicle to understeer or oversteer; and
- prioritizing means responsive to the first and second engine torque adjustment values for applying criteria to determine a desired engine torque, such that a turning behavior of the vehicle conforms to steering and braking inputs from the driver, the prioritizing means including means for either:
- (1) determining the desired engine torque in accordance with one of the group consisting of the first and second engine torque adjustment values, or
- (2) determining the desired engine torque by superimposing the first and second engine torque adjustment values.
- 9. Apparatus for improving the driving behavior of an automotive vehicle having an engine and front and rear axles, each axle having a plurality of wheels, each wheel having a brake, said apparatus comprising:
- an anti-lock braking system that provides first pressure values for controlling each brake, individually, to prevent the wheels from locking during braking;
- a traction slip control system that provides second pressure values for controlling each brake, individually, and a first engine torque adjustment value for controlling the engine, to prevent the wheels from slipping during acceleration;
- brake effort proportioning means which provides third pressure values for distributing braking pressure between the wheels of the front axle and the wheels of the rear axle;
- yawing moment control means responsive to a plurality of input signals representing (1) vehicle lateral acceleration, (2) vehicle yaw rate, (3) a brake pedal pressure applied by a driver of the vehicle and (4) a steering angle input by the driver, for providing fourth pressure values used to control each brake, individually, during cornering, and a second engine torque adjustment value used to control the engine during cornering, to avoid application to the vehicle of an unbalanced moment which would cause the vehicle to understeer or oversteer; and
- first prioritizing means for receiving the first, second, third and fourth pressure values and the brake pedal pressure, for applying criteria to determine a desired brake pressure that is applied to each wheel, individually, such that a turning behavior and a braking behavior of the vehicle conform to steering and braking inputs from the driver, the first prioritizing means including means for either:
- (1) determining the desired pressure applied to each brake, individually, in accordance with one of the group consisting of the first, second, third, and fourth pressure values and the brake pedal pressure, or
- (2) determining the desired brake pressure applied to each brake, individually, by superimposing two sets of brake pressures, each of the two sets of brake pressures being selected in accordance with a respectively different one of the group consisting of the first, second, third, and fourth pressure values and the brake pedal pressure,
- second prioritizing means for receiving the first and second engine torque adjustment values, and for applying criteria to determine a desired engine torque, such that a turning behavior of the vehicle conforms to steering and braking inputs from the driver, the second prioritizing means including means for either:
- (1) determining the desired engine torque in accordance with one of the first and second engine torque adjustment values, or
- (2) determining the desired engine torque by superimposing the first and second engine torque adjustment values.
- 10. In a device which includes means for controlling the wheel slip, the traction slip, the brake effort distribution between the front and rear axles and the yawing moment of a two-axle, four-wheel motor vehicle, which is equipped with a hydraulic brake system, which has one brake for each wheel, and a sensor system of the vehicle for determining the wheel speeds, the yaw rate and the lateral acceleration of the vehicle, wherein the device has a plurality of electronic controllers, each of which is associated with one or more of said wheel slip, traction slip, brake effort distribution and yawing moment control functions, the improvement comprising:
- means within each of the electronic controllers for developing brake pressure values for the individual wheels on the basis of respective control strategies for each electronic controller operating in parallel with and independently from one another.
- 11. Device in accordance with claim 10, wherein the means for developing brake pressure preset values include a priority circuit means which calculates desired brake pressures on the basis of the preset values of the individual controllers.
- 12. Device in accordance with claim 11, wherein the controllers for traction slip control and for yawing moment control additionally calculate preset values for the driving torque of the vehicle engine.
- 13. Device in accordance with claim 12, wherein said priority circuit means calculates a desired torque for the vehicle engine on the basis of said preset values for the driving torque.
- 14. Device in accordance with claim 10, wherein, in the case of failure of the sensor system for determining one of the group consisting of the yaw rate and the lateral acceleration, the electronic controller for yawing moment control is switched off, but the other controllers continue to operate.
