Claims
- 1. A system for making molded articles including a body portion of elastomeric material and a liner of an inert material covering at least a portion of the peripheral surface of the body portion; comprising a forming station including means for bonding a layer of the elastomeric material to one face of a layer of the inert material and means for forming the laminated layers to at least one clad element configuration, a loading station including means for positioning the clad element in at least one cavity of a mold with the layer of inert material contacting at least a portion of the surface of the mold cavity, and a molding station including means for charging the mold cavity with additional amounts of uncured elastomeric material and means for curing the elastomeric material to produce the finished article.
- 2. A system as claimed in claim 1 wherein the means for bonding the elastomeric material and inert material comprise a series of calender rolls for forming the layer of elastomeric material and bonding the same to said layer of inert material by application of heat and pressure thereby to form a laminated sheet of the elastomeric and inert material and a forming station including means for blanking the laminated sheet to form a plurality of clad elements.
- 3. A system as claimed in claim 2 wherein said means at said forming station includes a punch and die mechanism operable to form a plurality of clad discs from the laminated sheet.
- 4. A system as claimed in claim 3 including a transfer mechanism for transferring the clad discs from the die of the punch and die mechanism and position them in a loading rack, said loading rack having a plurality of openings of a diameter slightly smaller than the diameter of said clad discs to frictionally retain the discs therein.
- 5. A system as claimed in claim 4 wherein said mold cavity is of a smaller diameter at the bottom thereof than the diameter of said clad disc.
- 6. A system as claimed in claim 1 wherein the layers of elastomeric and inert material are formed into a laminated sheet at the forming station and wherein said forming station includes means for forming a plurality of clad discs from said laminated sheet and means for transferring said clad discs to a loading rack having a plurality of openings therein for said clad discs, each of said openings having a first section and a second section of smaller diameter defining at the juncture a seat for the discs.
- 7. A system as claimed in claim 1 wherein the forming station includes means for bonding the layer of elastomeric material to the inert material without the use of an adhesive.
- 8. A system as claimed in claim 11 wherein the forming station includes means for bonding the elastomeric and inert layers in sheet form and at least partially severing clad disc elements from the laminated sheet.
- 9. A system as claimed in claim 8 wherein the forming station includes means for completely cutting a plurality of clad disc elements from the laminated sheet.
