Claims
- 1. A system for use in performing a closed-chest through-port off-pump beating heart coronary artery bypass surgical procedure on a patient and for use with an endoscopic instrument, said system comprising:
a) a heart stabilizer adapted to apply pressure against a wall of the heart to effectively eliminate motion of the heart wall at or adjacent a location at which said pressure is applied; b) an instrument stabilizer adapted to receive an endoscopic instrument and adapted to minimize unwanted motion at a distal end of the endoscopic instrument by applying a biasing force to the distal end of the endoscopic instrument; and c) at least one port device insertable into a chest wall of the patient between two adjacent ribs, at least one of said heart stabilizer and said instrument stabilizer being extendable through said at least one port device.
- 2. A system according to claim 1, wherein:
said at least one port device comprises first and second port devices, said heart stabilizer extending through said first port device, and said instrument stabilizer extending through said second port device.
- 3. A system according to claim 1, further comprising:
d) means for coupling said heart stabilizer to said port device such that said heart stabilizer is longitudinally fixed relative to said port device.
- 4. A system according to claim 1, further comprising:
d) means for coupling said instrument stabilizer to said port device such that said instrument stabilizer is longitudinally locked relative to said port device.
- 5. A system according to claim 4, wherein:
said means for coupling rotationally locks said instrument stabilizer relative to said port device.
- 6. A system according to claim 1, wherein:
said port device is rigidly fixable to the chest wall.
- 7. A system according to claim 1, wherein:
said port device includes means for angularly directing said port device relative to the chest wall.
- 8. A system for use in performing a closed-chest through-port off-pump beating heart coronary artery bypass surgical procedure on a patient, said system comprising:
a) a heart stabilizer adapted to apply pressure against a wall of the heart to effectively eliminate motion of the heart wall at or adjacent a location at which said pressure is applied; and b) a port device insertable into a chest wall of the patient between two adjacent ribs, said heart stabilizer being extendable through and coupled to said at least one port.
- 9. A system according to claim 8, wherein:
said port device is rigidly fixable to the chest wall.
- 10. A system according to claim 8, wherein:
said port device includes means for angularly directing said port device relative to the chest wall.
- 11. A system for use in performing a closed-chest through-port off-pump beating heart coronary artery bypass surgical procedure on a patient and for use with an endoscopic instrument, said system comprising:
a) an instrument stabilizer adapted to receive an endoscopic instrument and adapted to minimize unwanted motion at a distal end of instrument by applying a biasing force to the distal end of the instrument; and b) a port device insertable into a chest wall of the patient between two adjacent ribs, said instrument stabilizer being extendable through and coupled to said at least one port.
- 12. A system according to claim 11, wherein:
said port device is rigidly fixable to the chest wall.
- 13. A system according to claim 11, wherein:
said port device includes means for angularly directing said port device relative to the chest wall.
- 14. A system for use in performing a closed-chest through-port off-pump beating heart coronary artery bypass surgical procedure on a patient and for use with an endoscopic instrument, said system comprising:
a) a heart stabilizer adapted to apply pressure against a wall of the heart to effectively eliminate motion of the heart wall at or adjacent a location at which said pressure is applied; b) an instrument stabilizer including a tubular member and a damping means for applying a stabilization force to said tubular member, wherein when the endoscopic instrument is extended through said tubular member and said instrument is moved non-axially relative to said tubular member, movement of said tubular member and consequently said instrument is damped by said damping means; and c) at least one port device insertable into a chest wall of the patient between two adjacent ribs, at least one of said heart stabilizer and said instrument stabilizer being extendable through said at least one port device.
- 15. A system for use in performing a closed-chest through-port off-pump beating heart coronary artery bypass surgical procedure on a patient and for use with an endoscopic instrument, said system comprising:
a) a heart stabilizer adapted to apply pressure against a wall of the heart to effectively eliminate motion of the heart wall at or adjacent a location at which said pressure is applied; b) an instrument stabilizer including a tubular member and an instrument stabilization means coupled to said tubular member for engaging a distal portion of the endoscopic instrument and applying a biasing force thereto; and c) a port device insertable into a chest wall of the patient between two adjacent ribs, at least one of said heart stabilizer and said instrument stabilizer being extendable through said at least one port device.
- 16. A system according to claim 15, wherein:
said port device is adapted to clamp internally and externally about said two adjacent ribs.
