Claims
- 1. Apparatus providing information from which alignment of an electronic component with respect to an electronic component receiving site may be effected, so that, once aligned, the component may be inserted thereinto, comprising:
- means having a field of view for providing a signal in response to optical energy imaged within its field of view representative of alignment of an electronic component in near placement position to an electronic component receiving site, the electronic component in near placement position to the electronic component site referred to as "object" hereafter; and
- means for optically imaging said object as a pair of first and second images within the field of view of the signal providing means, where said first and second images of said pair of images are respectively representative of a different preselected portion of said object, and where each said different preselected portion of said object, of which said first and second images of said pair of images are respectively representative, is selected to be split a portion that is less than the entire object but a portion from which said signal representative of alignment may be provided by said signal providing means;
- wherein said optically imaging means is an optical element positioned in an optical path defined between said signal providing means and the electronic component in near placement position to the electronic component receiving site and said optical element comprises a mirror.
- 2. The invention of claim 1, further including a plane mirror confronting the electronic component in near placement position to the electronic component receiving site and positioned along said optical path to reflect optical energy from said electronic component in near placement position to the electronic component receiving site to said spilt mirror.
- 3. The invention of claim 2, further including a positioning finger defining an axis through said plane mirror by means of which said electronic component is held in near placement position to said electronic component receiving site.
- 4. The invention of claim 3, wherein said split mirror is positioned along said optical path in confronting relation with said plane mirror having said finger thereinthrough and confronting said signal providing means.
- 5. The invention of claim 4, wherein said split mirror is constituted by first and second planar mirrors that are angled at an acute angle with respect to each other about a common edge, and wherein said common edge and the axis of the finger are aligned such that the image of the finger received by the split mirror is received along said common edge.
- 6. The invention of claim 1, wherein said preselected portion of at least one of said first and second images of said pair is a corner portion of said electronic component in near placement position with said electronic component receiving site.
- 7. The invention of claim 1, wherein said signal providing means is a video camera.
