Claims
- 1. A system for transferring a work piece between a first press station and a second press station in a multiple station transfer press having a plurality of associated upper and lower dies with each upper die having a maximum separation from the associated lower die corresponding with a distance the respective upper die and the respective lower die move relative to one another in their fully open position, the system comprising:
- at least one cross bar assembly movable between the first and second press stations in a direction corresponding with movement of the work piece through the transfer press;
- the cross bar assembly having at least one cross bar;
- a plurality of holding devices coupled to the cross bar for removably engaging a work piece;
- a transfer mechanism for moving the cross bar assembly from a first respective rest position to the associated first press station;
- the cross bar assembly and the respective holding devices operable to engage the work piece at the associated first press station and to move and deposit the work piece at the associated second press station;
- the transfer mechanism operable to move the cross bar assembly to a respective second rest position;
- the transfer mechanism then returning the cross bar assembly to the first respective rest position to prepare for a subsequent work piece transfer; and
- a predetermined portion of the movement from and to the respective first and second rest positions of the cross bar assembly occurring while the associated upper die is separated from the associated lower die by less than the maximum separation.
- 2. The system of claim 1, wherein each cross bar assembly further comprises:
- two cross bars movable together and independently of one another; and
- the two cross bars move away from each other as the respective cross bar assembly move to the associated first press station in anticipation of picking up a work piece at the associated first press station.
- 3. The system of claim 2, wherein the cross bars are independently operable to rotate, to be raised and lowered and to move back and forth with respect to each other to dynamically orient the work piece with respect to the associated first and second press stations.
- 4. The system of claim 2, wherein the cross bar assembly further comprises:
- a pair of opposite carriages with the cross bars extending therebetween;
- a vertical member coupled to the carriages for translating the cross bar assembly in a direction normal to the transfer direction;
- a horizontal member coupled to the vertical member for translating the cross bar assembly in the transfer direction;
- the cross bar assembly pivotally coupled to the horizontal member; and
- the cross bars independently programmable to translate on the vertical and horizontal members whereby the cross bars may adjust the position of a work piece relative to a centerline extending through the first press station and the second press station while moving the work piece from one associated lower die to the other associated lower die.
- 5. The system of claim 1, wherein the holding devices comprise a plurality of sets of vacuum cups on each cross bar, the vacuum cup sets operable to independently translate on the cross bar.
- 6. The system of claim 1, wherein the transfer mechanism comprises:
- first and second opposite transfer rails disposed parallel to the press stations and extending in the transfer direction;
- a plurality of vertical lift assemblies coupled to the transfer rails for raising and lowering the transfer rails; and
- a transfer drive mechanism for reciprocating the cross bar assemblies on the transfer rails.
- 7. A system for transferring a work piece between first and second press stations in a multiple station transfer press having a plurality of associated upper and lower dies with the upper dies having a maximum separation from the associated lower dies defined as a distance each upper die and each lower die move away from one another in their respective full open position, the system comprising:
- at least one cross bar assembly extending above the press stations perpendicular to the transfer direction of the press for removably engaging a work piece;
- the cross bar assembly having a pair of cross bars which move away from each other to anticipate pick up of the work piece as the cross bar assembly approaches the first work station and move toward each other as the cross bar assembly exits the second work station;
- a transfer mechanism for moving the cross bar assembly between first and second press stations;
- the transfer mechanism operable to move the cross bar assembly away from the second press station to a position on a side of a midpoint between the first and second press stations that is closer to the first press station; and
- a predetermined portion of the movement from the second press station occurring while the upper die is separated from the lower die by less than the maximum separation.
- 8. A system for transferring work pieces between respective press stations in a multiple station transfer press having a pair of upper and lower dies at each press station with each upper die having a maximum separation from the associated lower die equal to a distance that each upper die and associated lower die move away from one another in their fully open position, the system comprising:
- at least one cross bar assembly extending above the press stations transverse to a direction for transferring work pieces through the press;
- a plurality of holding devices coupled to each cross bar assembly for removably engaging respective work pieces;
- a transfer mechanism for moving each cross bar assembly from a respective first rest position to an associated first press station;
- each cross bar assembly and the respective holding devices operable to engage at least one work piece at the first associated press station and to move and deposit the one work piece at a second associated press station;
- the transfer mechanism then operable to move each cross bar assembly to a second respective rest position;
- the transfer mechanism then returning each cross bar assembly to the first respective rest position to prepare for a subsequent work piece transfer; and
- a predetermined portion of the movement to and from the respective first and second rest positions of each cross bar assembly occurring while the associated upper die is separated from the associated lower die by less than the maximum separation.
