Claims
- 1. A system for providing a seal for preventing fluid flow between relatively rotatable elements, said system comprising:
first and second relatively rotatable elements; said first element having a groove defined therein for receiving a seal element and retaining said seal element at a predetermined orientation relative to said second element; a seal element removably received in said groove; and a spacer element disposed between said seal element in said groove and said first element, said spacer element being formed from a substantially non-resilient material.
- 2. The system as claimed in claim 1 wherein said seal element is formed from a substantially non-deformable material.
- 3. The system as claimed in claim 1 wherein said spacer element is formed from a wire.
- 4. The system as claimed in claim 3 wherein said wire is metallic.
- 5. The system as claimed in claim 1 wherein said first element is a piston having an opening therein, said groove being defined around the periphery of said opening in said piston.
- 6. The system as claimed in claim 5 wherein said second element is a drum having a hub, said hub of said drum adapted to be received in said opening in said piston.
- 7. The system as claimed in claim 6 wherein said drum is rotatable relative to said piston.
- 8. The system as claimed in claim 6 wherein said piston is rotatable relative to said drum.
- 9. The system as claimed in claim 6 wherein said piston and said drum are arranged such that said seal element extends inwardly from said opening in said piston and is contiguous with the outer surface of said hub of said drum when said hub is received in said opening in said piston.
- 10. The system as claimed in claim 1 wherein said first element is a drum having a hub thereon, said groove being defined around the outer surface of the hub.
- 11. The system as claimed in claim 10 wherein said second element is a piston having an opening therein, said hub of said drum adapted to be received in said opening in said piston.
- 12. The system as claimed in claim 11 wherein said drum is rotatable relative to said piston.
- 13. The system as claimed in claim 11 wherein said piston is rotatable relative to said drum.
- 14. The system as claimed in claim 11 wherein said piston and said drum are arranged such that said seal element extends outwardly from said outer surface of said hub and is contiguous with the periphery of said opening in said piston when said hub is received in said opening in said piston.
- 15. A system for providing a seal for preventing fluid flow between relatively rotatable elements, said system comprising:
first and second relatively rotatable elements; said first element having a groove defined therein for receiving a seal element and retaining said seal element at a predetermined orientation relative to said second element; a seal element removably received in said groove; a spacer element disposed between said seal element in said groove and said first element, said spacer element being formed from a substantially non-resilient material; said seal element being formed from a substantially non-deformable material; said substantially non-deformable seal element having a width less than the width of said groove in said first element so as to define a space in said groove adjacent to said seal element, said space adapted to receive fluid therein.
- 16. The system as claimed in claim 15 wherein said first element is a piston, and said second element is a drum having a hub; said piston having an opening therein for receiving said hub.
- 17. The system as claimed in claim 15 wherein said first element is a drum having a hub thereon, and said second element is a piston; said piston having an opening therein for receiving said hub.
- 18. A system for providing a seal for preventing fluid flow between relatively rotatable elements, said system comprising:
first and second rotatable elements; a seal element; said first element having a groove defined therein for receiving said seal element therein, said first and second elements being arranged to define a space therebetween such that a portion of said seal element extends into said space; and a spacer element disposed in said groove in said first rotatable element and beneath said seal element for cooperating with fluid pressure acting on said seal element for urging said seal element in a direction into said space defined between said first and second rotatable elements.
- 19. The system as claimed in claim 18 wherein said spacer element is movable relative to said seal element.
- 20. The system as claimed in claim 19 wherein said spacer element is formed from a substantially non-deformable material.
