Claims
- 1. In a printer provided with one of a plurality of interchangeable type carriers, each of said interchangeable type carriers having a predetermined number of characters thereon, and a corresponding group of type marks, the improvement characterized by a system for discriminating among said plurality of interchangeable type carriers comprising: PG,20
- (a) a synchronizing mark provided on said type carrier at a first preselected position proximate to a first type mark;
- (b) a discrimination mark provided on said type carrier at a second preselected position proximate to a second type mark displaced a preselected small number of type marks from said first type mark; said discrimination mark being spaced from said synchronizing mark by a distance considerably less than a length of said type carrier;
- (c) means for sensing said synchronizing mark, said type marks, and said discrimination mark and for separating out a sensed synchronizing mark, sensed type marks, and a sensed discrimination mark; and
- (d) means responsive to said sensing and separating means for counting the number of type marks between said sensed synchronizing mark and said sensed discrimination mark, said number of type marks counted being indicative of the number of characters on said type carrier, and means for decoding said count of said number of type marks to provide an output signal indicative of said predetermined number of characters on said interchangeable type carrier being used.
- 2. The discrimination system as recited in claim 1, wherein said counting and decoding means includes:
- (a) first counter means having a clock input responsive to said sensed type marks and a clear input responsive to said sensed synchronizing mark for providing a binary count signal of said clock input signal;
- (b) register means having inputs responsive to said binary count signal of said first counter means and a gate input responsive to said sensed discrimination mark for providing at an output said binary count signal when said sensed discrimination mark is present; and
- (c) decoder means responsive to said output of said register means for providing one of a plurality of output signals corresponding to said binary state of said output from said register means, whereby the predetermined number of characters on said interchangeable type carrier is indicated.
- 3. The discrimination system as recited in claim 2, wherein said synchronizing mark and said discrimination mark are located in a common line with said group of type marks and between respective pairs of type marks and said sensing and separating means includes:
- (a) a sensor for sensing said synchronizing mark, said type marks, and said discrimination mark; and
- (b) means responsive to said sensor for separating out said sensed synchronizing marks, said sensed type marks, and said sensed discrimination mark.
- 4. The discrimination system as recited in claim 2, wherein said synchronizing mark and discrimination mark are located on a separate line from said group of type marks and said sensing and separating means includes:
- (a) a first sensor for sensing said type marks;
- (b) a second sensor for sensing said synchronizing mark and said discrimination marks; and
- (c) means responsive to said second sensor for separating out said sensed synchronizing mark and said sensed discrimination mark.
- 5. The discrimination system as recited in claim 2, wherein said synchronizing mark, said discrimination mark and said group of type marks are located on separate lines and said sensing means includes:
- (a) a first sensor for sensing said type marks;
- (b) a second sensor for sensing said synchronizing mark; and
- (c) a third sensor for sensing said discrimination mark.
- 6. The discrimination system as recited in claim 1, wherein said synchronizing mark and said discrimination mark are located in a common line with said group of type marks and between respective pairs of type marks and said sensing and separating means includes:
- (a) a sensor for sensing said synchronizing mark, said type marks, and said discrimination mark; and
- (b) means responsive to said sensor for separating out said sensed synchronizing marks, said sensed type marks, and said sensed discrimination mark.
- 7. The discrimination system as recited in claim 1, wherein said synchronizing mark and discrimination mark are located on a separate line from said group of type marks and said sensing and separating means includes:
- (a) a first sensor for sensing said type marks;
- (b) a second sensor for sensing said synchronizing mark and said discrimination mark; and
- (c) means responsive to said second sensor for separating out said sensed synchronizing mark and said sensed discrimination mark.
- 8. The discrimination system as recited in claim 1, wherein said synchronizing mark, said discrimination mark and said group of type marks are located on separate lines and said sensing means includes:
- (a) a first sensor for sensing said type marks;
- (b) a second sensor for sensing said synchronizing mark; and
- (c) a third sensor for sensing said discrimination mark.
- 9. In a printer provided with one of a plurality of interchangeable type carriers, each of said interchangeable type carriers having a predetermined type pitch, character size, type code and a number of characters thereon, and a corresponding group of type marks, the improvement characterized by a system for discriminating among said plurality of interchangeable type carriers comprising:
- (a) a synchronizing mark provided on said type carrier at a first preselected position proximate to a first type mark;
- (b) a discrimination mark provided on said type carrier at a second preselected position proximate to a second type mark displaced a preselected small number of type marks from said first type mark, said discrimination mark being spaced from said synchronizing mark by a distance considerably less than a length of said type carrier;
- (c) means for sensing said synchronizing mark, said type marks, and said discrimination mark and for separating out a sensed synchronizing mark, sensed type marks, and a sensed discrimination mark; said synchronizing mark, said discrimination mark and said type marks being arranged in predetermined positional relationships in dependence on the characteristics of the particular type carrier, and
- (d) means responsive to said sensing and separating means for determining the characteristics of said interchangeable type carrier from the relative positions of said synchronizing mark, said discrimination mark, and said type marks.
