The present invention relates generally to security systems employing intrusion detectors. More particularly, the present invention relates to systems and methods for adjusting a signal broadcast pattern of an intrusion detector.
Known systems and methods for adjusting a signal broadcast pattern of an intrusion detector rely on manual actuation of an internal component. For example,
In view of the above, there is a continuing, ongoing need for improved systems and methods.
While this invention is susceptible of an embodiment in many different forms, there are shown in the drawings and will be described herein in detail specific embodiments thereof with the understanding that the present disclosure is to be considered as an exemplification of the principles of the invention. It is not intended to limit the invention to the specific illustrated embodiments.
Embodiments disclosed herein may include systems and methods for adjusting a signal broadcast pattern of an intrusion detector. For example, the intrusion detector as disclosed herein can include a microwave sensor, a signal adjuster electrically coupled to the microwave sensor, a communication module, a processor or main processing unit, and executable control software for the processor or main processing unit. In some embodiments, the signal adjuster can include a digital potentiometer.
In accordance with disclosed embodiments, the microwave sensor can be configured to broadcast a detection signal into a secured area in a broadcast pattern. In some embodiments, the broadcast pattern can be a function of a sensitivity of the microwave sensor (e.g. an amplitude of the detection signal) and/or environmental characteristics of the secured area, such as room size, construction materials, room temperature, and a presence or an absence of electromagnetic interference.
Furthermore, the communication module can be configured to wirelessly receive a signal adjustment command. In some embodiments, the communication module can receive the signal adjustment command from a remote device, such as a mobile device, or a control panel of a security system that includes the intrusion detector. Responsive to the signal adjustment command, the processor or main processing unit and the executable control software can be configured to parse the signal adjustment command and instruct the signal adjuster to adjust the sensitivity of the microwave sensor or the amplitude of the detection signal to alter a broadcast area of the broadcast pattern based on information contained in the adjustment command.
In some embodiments, prior to receiving the signal adjustment command, the processor or main processing unit and the executable control software can be configured to transition the intrusion detector into a settings configuration mode, for example, responsive to user input from the remote device received by the communication module. In such embodiments, after the signal adjuster adjusts the sensitivity of the microwave sensor or the amplitude of the detection signal to alter the broadcast area of the broadcast pattern, the communication module can receive an acknowledgement signal, and the acknowledgement signal can confirm that the broadcast area of the broadcast pattern has been updated as requested by the signal adjustment command. Responsive to receiving the acknowledgment signal, the processor or main processing unit and the executable control software can transition the intrusion detector from the settings configuration mode to a normal operating mode.
In some embodiments, the information contained in the adjustment command can include a desired area for the broadcast pattern. In such embodiments, the processor or main processing unit and the executable control software can instruct the signal adjuster to adjust the sensitivity of the microwave sensor or the amplitude of the detection signal to a level or value that alters the broadcast area of the broadcast pattern to match the desired area for the broadcast pattern. In some embodiments, the signal adjuster can increase the sensitivity of the microwave sensor or the amplitude of the detection signal to increase the broadcast area of the broadcast pattern and decrease the sensitivity of the microwave sensor or the amplitude of the detection signal to decrease the broadcast area of the broadcast pattern. Additionally or alternatively, in some embodiments, the information contained in the adjustment command can include a desired detection signal level or desired amplitude, and the processor and the executable control software can instruct the signal adjuster to adjust a current level or amplitude of the detection signal to match the desired detection signal level or desired amplitude.
Furthermore, as seen in
As seen in
Once in the settings configuration mode, the method 100 can include determining whether the broadcast pattern of the broadcast signal 26 being broadcast by the intrusion detector 22 matches a desired pattern for the broadcast signal 26 indicated in received user input, as in 110. When the broadcast pattern of the broadcast signal 26 matches the desired pattern for the broadcast signal 26 to an acceptable degree, the method 100 can include the processor 30 transitioning the intrusion detector 22 into a normal operating mode, as in 111. However, when the broadcast pattern of the broadcast signal 26 fails to match the desired pattern for the broadcast signal 26, the method 100 can include the processor 30 receiving, for example, from the remote device 24, an adjustment signal command with instructions to adjust the broadcast pattern of the detection signal 26, as in 112, and the processor 30 verifying that the broadcast pattern of the detection signal 26 conforms to the instructions in the adjustment signal command, as in 114 and 116.
When the broadcast pattern of the detection signal 26 fails to conform to the instructions in the adjustment signal command, the method 100 can include the processor 30 continuing to receive, for example, from the remote device 24, the adjustment signal command, as in 118. However, when the broadcast pattern of the detection signal 26 does conform with the instructions in the adjustment signal command, the method 100 can include the processor 30 finalizing the broadcast pattern of the detection signal 26, as in 120, and the processor 30 transitioning the intrusion detector 22 into the normal operating mode, as in 122.
Although a few embodiments have been described in detail above, other modifications are possible. For example, the steps described above do not require the particular order described or sequential order to achieve desirable results. Other steps may be provided, steps may be eliminated from the described flows, and other components may be added to or removed from the described systems. Other embodiments may be within the scope of the invention.
From the foregoing, it will be observed that numerous variations and modifications may be effected without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention. It is to be understood that no limitation with respect to the specific system or method described herein is intended or should be inferred. It is, of course, intended to cover all such modifications as fall within the spirit and scope of the invention.
