Claims
- 1. A method for converting reference materials into interactive reference materials comprising:
obtaining at least one reference document in a computer readable form; searching said reference documents for a piece of reference text having a pre-determined value; tagging said reference text with a tag indicating a reference text type; repeating said steps of searching and tagging until all pieces of reference text have been tagged; associating patterns of said tags to a global control; replacing at least two of said patterns with a new tag from said global control; linking a first piece of reference text with a second piece of reference text based on said new tags; converting said at least one reference documents into a browser readable format; allowing a user to access said reference documents from a client; and providing to said user the ability to jump from said first piece of reference text to said second piece of reference text.
- 2. The method of claim 1 wherein said step of obtaining comprises scanning a paper document and performing text recognition.
- 3. The method of claim 1 wherein the step of obtaining comprises obtaining a file in XML.
- 4. The method of claim 1 wherein the step of obtaining comprises converting ASCII text into extensible markup language.
- 5. The method of claim 1 wherein the steps of searching an tagging includes hot-spotting
- 6. The method of claim 1 wherein the step of tagging, said tags comprise XML tags.
- 7. The method of claim 1 wherein the step of replacing, said new tags comprise XML tags
- 8. The method of claim 1 wherein said global control comprises a database
- 9. The method of claim 13 wherein said database comprises a Document Type Definition (DTD).
- 10. The method of claim 14 wherein said DTD includes at least one of Army 2361A, Air Force 38784, and Navy 3001.
- 11. The method of claim 1 wherein said step of converting comprises converting said reference documents into HTML.
- 12. The method of claim 1 wherein said step of converting comprises converting said reference documents into an HTML frame, XML, and an XSL style sheet.
- 13. The method of claim 1 wherein said steps of searching and tagging are performed by a computer.
- 14. The method of claim 1 wherein said steps of searching and tagging are performed in a semi-automated fashion.
- 15. The method of claim 1 wherein said reference document comprises a military document.
- 16. The method of claim 14 wherein said military document includes at least one of the following types of document: a maintenance manual, a repair manual, an operator's manual, an Integrated Parts List (IPB), and Repair Parts Special Tools List (RPSTL).
- 17. The method of claim 1 wherein said client comprises a computer.
- 18. The method of claim 1 wherein said client accesses said reference document from a server via a network.
- 19. The method of claim 1 wherein said client accesses said reference document from storage media local to said client.
- 20. The method of claim 1 wherein said steps of linking and converting are performed by a computer.
- 21. A system for converting reference materials to interactive reference materials comprising:
a reference material in a computer readable form; a computer; and software running on said computer; wherein said software searches said reference material for a first piece of reference text and generates a link from said first piece of reference text to a pre-determined point elsewhere in said reference material without removing said first piece of reference text to a separate file.
- 22. The system of claim 20 wherein said pre-determined point comprises a second piece of reference text.
- 23. A method for converting reference materials into interactive reference materials comprising:
obtaining at least one reference document in computer readable format; converting said reference document to include XML tags; searching said reference documents for XML tag combinations corresponding to values in a global control; replacing said XML tag combinations with a new XML tag referenced to said global control; and associating at least one of said new XML tags with a hyperlink directed to a location in said document separate from said new XML tag.
