Claims
- 1. A system for modifying ice adhesion strength of ice adhered to an object, comprising: an electrode electrically insulated from the object, a DC source coupled to the object and the electrode to generate a DC bias to an interface between the ice and the object, the DC bias having a voltage which modifies the ice adhesion strength selectively as compared to the ice adhesion strength with substantially zero bias voltage at the interface.
- 2. A system according to claim 1, wherein the DC source is a battery.
- 3. A system according to claim 1, further comprising an electrically insulating material disposed between the object and the electrode, the material having substantially the same shape as the electrode.
- 4. A system according to claim 1, wherein the electrode comprises a grid electrode shaped to conform to a surface of the object, each point of the grid electrode being in electrical contact with the source.
- 5. A system according to claim 4, further comprising a grid insulator disposed between the object and the grid electrode.
- 6. A system according to claim 1, wherein the object comprises an aircraft wing.
- 7. A system according to claim 1, wherein the object comprises an automobile windshield.
- 8. A system according to claim 1, wherein the object comprises a bottom of a ski.
- 9. A system according to claim 1, wherein the object comprises a heel or sole or a boot or shoe.
- 10. A system according to claim 1, wherein the object comprises an outer material of a power line.
- 11. A system according to claim 1, wherein the object comprises a vehicle tire.
- 12. A system according to claim 1, wherein the object is doped to conduct electricity.
- 13. A system according to claim 1, further comprising an electrically insulating lacquer disposed on the surface in a selected pattern, and wherein the electrode comprises conductive paint disposed over the lacquer.
- 14. A system according to claim 1, further comprising a DC ammeter connected in circuit with the electrode and source for determining a DC conductivity of the ice.
- 15. A system according to claim 14, further comprising a AC source and AC ammeter connected in circuit with the electrode and source for determining an AC conductivity of the ice.
- 16. A system according to claim 15, wherein the AC source generates one or more frequencies between about 10 kHz to 100 kHz.
- 17. A system according to claim 15, further comprising a current comparator, coupled to the DC and AC ammeters, for generating a signal representative of a ratio between the DC and AC conductivities.
- 18. A system according to claim 17, further comprising a feedback subsystem to assess the signal and to determine whether ice or water shorts the circuit between the electrode and the object.
- 19. A system according to claim 18, further comprising a temperature sensor constructed and arranged to measure ice temperature and for transmitting a signal representative of ice temperature to the feedback subsystem.
- 20. A system according to claim 18, further comprising an icing alarm which activates the system upon detecting ice corresponding to a pre-set value of AC to DC ice conductivities.
- 21. A system according to claim 18, wherein the feedback subsystem maintains the DC bias a value between about one and six volts.
- 22. A system according to claim 15, further comprising an inductor for reducing cross-coupling between AC and DC signals.
- 23. A system according to claim 1, further comprising a feedback subsystem for determining the DC conductivity and temperature of ice, the subsystem being coupled for control of the DC source to adjust the bias in response to determined conductivity and temperature to minimize adhesion strength.
- 24. A system according to claim 1, wherein the feedback subsystem controls DC bias to provide up to one ampere per square inch at the interface.
- 25. A system according to claim 1, wherein the DC power source supplies a voltage differential between about one and six volts.
- 26. A system according to claim 1, wherein the object comprises an automobile tire, wherein the DC source comprises an AC power source to provide high frequency voltages to impart a DC bias between the tire and a road in contact with the tire, the bias being selected to increase the ice adhesion strength.
- 27. A system according to claim 1, further comprising a user interface for modifying the DC bias selectively to increase and alternatively decrease the ice adhesion strength.
