Claims
- 1. A dental appliance comprising:
a laminar shell having an inner layer and an outer layer, wherein said inner layer includes at least two segments which conform to individual teeth or groups of teeth, said outer layer joins said segments of the inner layer together, and said outer layer has a lower modulus of elasticity than said inner layer.
- 2. A dental appliance as in claim 1, wherein the inner and outer layers have elastic moduluses in the range from 0.5 GPa to 5 GPa.
- 3. A dental appliance as in claim 2, wherein the elastic modulus of the inner layer differs from that of the outer layer by from 25% to 600%.
- 4. A method for producing a dental appliance with varying stiffnesses, said method comprising:
providing a mold of dental features; forming a first layer of a material having a first stiffness over a first portion of said mold; and forming a second layer of a material having a second stiffness over a second portion of said mold; segmenting the first layer into separate segments which conform to individual teeth or groups of teeth; and laminating the first and second layers into an integral appliance.
- 5. A method as in claim 4, wherein the first portion of the mold and the second portion of the mold have no portions in common.
- 6. A method as in claim 5, wherein the forming steps occur simultaneously.
- 7. A method as in claim 4, wherein the first portion of the mold and the second portion of the mold at least partly overlap.
- 8. A method as in claim 7, wherein the forming steps occur in succession.
- 9. A method as in claim 8, wherein further comprising removing material from the first layer prior to forming the second layer.
- 10. A method as in claim 9, wherein removing material comprises separating adjacent sections of the first layer so that said separated sections conform to individual teeth or groups of teeth when the appliance is placed over teeth.
- 11. A method as in claim 10, wherein the first layer is more stiff than the second layer.
- 12. A method as in claim 4, wherein said forming steps are comprised of thermoforming, reaction casting, coating, treating, or altering.
- 13. A method for repositioning teeth, said method comprising:
placing a first incremental position adjustment appliance over teeth in a patient's mouth, and successively placing at least a second incremental position adjustment appliance over the teeth in the patient's mouth, wherein the appliances comprise polymeric shells having shaped cavities comprising an inner layer including at least two segments which conform to individual teeth and an outer layer which joins the segments together, wherein the outer layer has a lower elastic modulus than the inner layer.
