Claims
- 1. A system for purging and cleaning additive supplied to a thermoplastic melt from process lines, comprising:
- an additive supply tank having input and discharge ports;
- a main additive supply line for supplying additive from the discharge port of the additive supply tank to a thermoplastic melt;
- a recirculation line which fluid-connects said main additive supply line downstream of said discharge port of said additive supply tank to said input port of said additive supply tank to allow a portion of the additive in the main additive supply line to be recirculated to said additive supply tank;
- a recirculation pump disposed in said main additive supply line and having an input side fluid-connected to said output port of said additive supply tank and an output side fluid-connected to said input port of said additive supply tank through said recirculation line;
- a source of purge fluid;
- a control valve which controllably establishes fluid-communication between said source of purge fluid and said main additive supply line upstream of the thermoplastic melt during a purge cycle; and
- a control system which (i) operates said recirculation pump during an additive supply cycle so as to force the additive from the output side of the recirculation pump through the main additive supply line to a thermoplastic melt, while continuously recirculating a portion of the additive through the recirculation line to the input port of the additive supply tank, and thereafter (ii) stopping the operation of the recirculation pump and concurrently operating the control valve so as to establish fluid-communication between the source of purge fluid and the main additive supply line so as to back-flush the main additive supply line and the recirculation line with a purge fluid, whereby additive in the main additive supply line and the recirculation line is back-flushed into the additive supply tank through the input and discharge ports, respectively.
- 2. The system of claim 1, wherein the recirculation line has a recirculation pump bypass line which fluid-connects the output side of the recirculation pump to the input side of the recirculation pump, and wherein the controller causes the purge fluid to be directed through the pump bypass line and to the discharge port of the additive supply tank while the operation of the recirculation pump is stopped.
- 3. The system of claim 2, wherein said main additive supply line has a metering pump downstream of said recirculation pump, and wherein the controller operates said metering pump during the additive supply cycle so that said main additive supply line supplies additive to an input side of said metering pump, and said metering pump delivers additive from an output side thereof to the thermoplastic melt, and wherein during the purge cycle the controller stops operation of said metering pump and supplies the purge fluid to said main additive supply line at an input side of said metering pump.
- 4. The system of claim 3, further comprising a flow control valve downstream of the metering pump, and wherein during the purge cycle, the controller directs the purge fluid to the output side of the metering pump to the flow control valve, and operates the flow valve so that the purge fluid flows to a waste site.
- 5. The system of claim 3, wherein during the purge cycle, the controller:
- (iii) stops the operation of the recirculation pump; and
- (iv) supplies the purge fluid to both the input and the output sides of the metering pump.
- 6. The system of any one of claims 2, 3 or 5, further comprising a second additive supply tank having a second main additive supply line fluid-connecting the second additive supply tank to the thermoplastic melt for supplying a second additive to the thermoplastic melt simultaneously while said first-mentioned main additive supply line is purged.
- 7. The system of claim 4, further comprising a second additive supply tank having a second main additive supply line fluid-connecting the second additive supply tank to the thermoplastic melt for supplying a second additive to the thermoplastic melt simultaneously while said first-mentioned main additive supply line is purged.
- 8. A system for purging and cleaning additives for thermoplastic materials from process lines, comprising:
- first and second additive supply tanks;
- an extruder for forming a thermoplastic melt;
- a flow control valve having one outlet fluid-connected to the extruder;
- first and second main additive supply lines which are fluid-connected between said first and second additive supply tanks, respectively, and an inlet of said flow control valve;
- a purge control valve having first and second outputs which are respectively fluid-connected to said first and second main additive supply lines upstream of said flow control valve;
- a source of purge fluid; and
- a controller which (i) operates the flow control valve so as to stop the supply of additive from said first additive supply tank to the extruder, and then initiate the supply of additive from said second additive supply tank to the extruder, and (ii) operates the purge control valve so that the purge fluid is directed through the first main additive supply line so as to back-flush the first additive therein to the first additive supply tank simultaneously while said second additive is being supplied to the extruder from the second additive supply tank.
- 9. The system of claim 8, further comprising a waste site, and wherein the flow control valve has a vent fluid-connected to the waste site, and wherein the controller operates the flow control valve so as to cause the purge fluid to flow through the vent of the flow control valve and on to the waste site simultaneously while the second additive is supplied to the extruder through the control valve.
