Claims
- 1. A centrifuge system which is operable with different centrifuge rotors, each rotor having one or more sets of detectable coding elements, each set of which defines a code corresponding to a maximum operating speed of the rotor for operation in one of different centrifuges, the centrifuge system comprising:
- drive means for rotating a rotor about an axis;
- first detection means including a first sensor positioned at a first radial distance from the axis for detecting the presence or absence of a first set of coding elements on a revolving rotor, wherein said first set of coding elements define a first code corresponding to a first maximum operating speed for operation in a different centrifuge;
- second detection means including a second sensor positioned at a second radial distance from the axis for detecting the presence or absense of a second set of coding elements present on a revolving rotor, wherein said second set of coding elements define a second code corresponding to a second maximum operating speed higher than said first maximum operating speed for operation in the present centrifuge system;
- means, connected to both the first and second detection means, for distinguishing between a rotor having both the first and the second sets of coding elements from a rotor having only the first set of coding elements, said distinguishing means including a means for determining the second code of a revolving centrifuge rotor having the second set of coding elements and a means for determining the first code of a revolving centrifuge rotor having only the first set of coding elements.
- 2. A centrifuge system as in claim 1 wherein the first set of coding elements are magnets attached to the rotor and the first detection means detects rotation of the magnets pass the detection means.
- 3. A centrifuge system as in claim 2 wherein the magnets are arranged in a manner such that the sequence of the north-south orientations of the magnets defines the first code.
- 4. A centrifuge system as in claim 3 wherein the magnets are arranged at equal angular intervals about the axis.
- 5. A centrifuge system as in claim 1 wherein the first and second sets of coding elements are arranged in concentric circular arrays about the axis of the rotor.
- 6. A centrifuge system as in claim 1 wherein the first detection means includes means for determining actual rotation speed based on the detected first set of coding elements of a rotor having both said first and second sets of coding elements with the second detection means detecting the second set of coding elements thereon.
- 7. A centrifuge system as in claim 1 wherein the second detection means further includes means for generating a pulse each time a coding element rotates past the second sensor, and comparator means for recognizing the presence of said pulse having an amplitude exceeding a variable threshold.
- 8. A centrifuge system as in claim 7 wherein the second detection means further includes threshold setting means for determining amplitudes of the pulses generated by the second sensor means and varying the threshold in relation to an average amplitude of a given number of pulse amplitudes.
- 9. A centrifuge system as in claim 8 wherein the threshold is set at a predetermined fraction of the average amplitude.
- 10. A centrifuge system as in claim 1 wherein the first detection means further includes means for generating a pulse each time a coding element rotates past the first sensor, and comparator means for recognizing the presence of said pulse having an amplitude exceeding a variable threshold.
- 11. A centrifuge system as in claim 10 wherein the first detection means further includes threshold setting means for determining amplitudes of the pulses generated by the first sensor and varying the threshold in relation to an average amplitude of a given number of pulse amplitudes.
- 12. A centrifuge system as in claim 11 wherein the threshold is set at a predetermined fraction of the average amplitude.
- 13. A centrifuge system as in claim 1 wherein one of the different rotors for use in the system includes:
- a body configured for holding a sample for centrifuging about the axis;
- a first set of detectable coding elements provided on the body and arranged at a first radius about the axis, said first set defining a first code which represents a first maximum operating speed of the rotor for operation in a different centrifuge; and
- a second set of detectable coding elements provided on the body and arranged at a second radius about the spin axis, said second set defining a second code which corresponds to a second maximum operating speed higher than the first maximum operating speed of the rotor for operation in the present centrifuge system,
- whereby at least the second set of coding elements are detected to obtain the second code to determine the second maximum operating speed at which the rotor can be operated.
