Claims
- 1. A seat assembly (10) for use on a support surface (14), comprising:
a first portion (16); a second portion (18) spaced from said first portion (16); at least one connector panel (52) separable from and independent of said first (16) and second (18) portions for interconnecting said first (16) and second (18) portions; a first locking tab (56a) attached to one of said first portion (16) and said connector panel (52) and a first slot (58a) defined in the other of said first portion (16) and said connector panel (52) for receiving said first locking tab (56a) to connect said first portion (16) to said connector panel (52); a second locking tab (56b) attached to one of said second portion (18) and said connector panel (52) and a second slot (58b) defined in the other of said second portion (18) and said connector panel (52) for receiving said second locking tab (56b) to connect said second portion (18) to said connector panel (52); and a mounting mechanism (80) attached to said connector panel (52) for mounting said connector panel (52) to the support surface (14) thereby securing the first (16) and second (18) portions to the support surface (14).
- 2. An assembly as set forth in claim 1 wherein said connector panel (52) includes a first end (60), a second end (62), and a base (82) and said mounting mechanism (80) includes a mounting bracket (84) attached to said base (82) of said connector panel (52).
- 3. An assembly as set forth in claim 2 wherein said mounting bracket (84) defines a plurality of mounting holes (88) extending therethrough and a semi-circular notch (90) surrounding each of said mounting holes (88) for providing access to said mounting holes (88).
- 4. An assembly as set forth in claim 3 wherein said first locking tab (56a) is attached to said first end (60) of said connector panel (52) and said first slot (58a) is disposed in said first portion (16) and said second locking tab (56b) is attached to said second end (62) of said connector panel (52) and said second slot (58b) is disposed in said second portion (18) for interconnecting said first (16) and second (18) portions.
- 5. An assembly as set forth in claim 4 wherein said first portion (16) defines a third slot (58c) and a third locking tab (56c) is attached to said first end (60) of said connector panel (52) for inserting into said third slot (58c).
- 6. An assembly as set forth in claim 5 wherein said second portion (18) defines a fourth slot (58d) and a fourth locking tab (56d) is attached to said second end (62) of said connector panel (52) for inserting into said fourth slot (58d).
- 7. An assembly as set forth in claim 6 wherein each of said locking tabs (56) are generally hook-shaped and include a front face (68), a top face (70) parallel to and spaced from a bottom face (72), and first (74) and second (76) angled faces interconnecting said front face (68) and said top (70) and bottom (72) faces.
- 8. An assembly as set forth in claim 7 wherein each of said locking tabs (56) have a length (L1) between said top (70) and bottom (72) faces equal to a length (L2) of each of said slots (58) of said portions (16,18) for providing a snug fit between said connector panel (52) and said portions (16,18).
- 9. An assembly as set forth in claim 8 wherein said front face (68) of each of said locking tabs (56) has a length (L3) that is greater than said length (L2) of each of said slots (58) defined by said first (16) and second (18) portions.
- 10. An assembly as set forth in claim 9 wherein said first angled face (74) of each of said locking tabs (56) is at a first angle (α1) to a horizontal plane (P1) and said 30 second angled face (76) of each of said locking tabs (56) is at a second angle (α2) to a horizontal plane (P2) that is greater than said first angle (α1).
- 11. An assembly as set forth in claim 10 wherein said portions (16,18) include outer walls (20) having a thickness and said top (70) and bottom (72) faces of each of said locking tabs (56) have an equal width matching a width of each of said slots (58) and an equal depth matching the thickness of said outer walls (20) of said portions (16,18) for further providing the snug fit between said connector panel (52) and said portions (16,18).
- 12. An assembly as set forth in claim 11 wherein said connector panel (52) has outer (64) and inner (66) side faces and said locking tabs (56) are flush with said inner side face (66) and offset from said outer side face (64) such that said outer side face (64) is flush with said outer walls (20) of said first (16) and second (18) portions when said connector panel (52) is connected to said portions (16,18).
- 13. An assembly as set forth in claim 12 wherein said mounting bracket (84) extends perpendicularly to said base (82) of said connector panel (52) and said locking tabs (56).
- 14. An assembly as set forth in claim 13 wherein said locking tabs (56) and said mounting bracket (84) are integrally formed with said connector panel (52).
- 15. An assembly as set forth in claim 14 wherein said length (L1) between said top (70) and bottom (72) faces of each of said locking tabs (56) is at least sixteen percent of a height (H) of said connector panel (52) and at least sixteen percent of a width (W) of said connector panel (52).
- 16. An assembly as set forth in claim 14 wherein said length (L1) between said top (70) and bottom (72) faces of each of said locking tabs (56) is between eighteen and twenty percent of a height (H) of said connector panel (52)
- 17. An assembly as set forth in claim 14 further including a second connector panel (54) independent of said first (16) and second (18) portions and identical to said first connector panel 52 for further interconnecting said first (16) and second (18) portions.
- 18. An assembly as set forth in claim 17 wherein said connector panels (52,54) and said first (16) and second (18) portions define an open cavity therebetween when connected and said mounting bracket (84) extends into said open cavity.
- 19. An assembly as set forth in claim 18 wherein each of said connector panels (52,54) define a plurality of mounting bores (96) therethrough having equal size.
- 20. An assembly as set forth in claim 19 further including at least one trim piece (102) mounted to said outer side face (64) of at least one of said connector panels (52,54) by a plurality of fasteners (94) extending through said plurality of mounting bores (96) in one of said connector panels (52,54).
- 21. An assembly as set forth in claim 20 further including a bench seat (110) supported by said first (16) and second (18) portions and said connector panels (52,54).
- 22. An assembly as set forth in claim 21 wherein each of said portions (16,18) and said connector panels (52,54) are formed from rotational molded plastic.
- 23. An assembly as set forth in claim 22 wherein said first (16) and second (18) portions comprise hollow and unitary bodies and said first portion (16) has left (22), right (24), and center (26) sections and a bench support surface (28) and back support surface (30) at each of said left (22), right (24), and center (26) sections.
- 24. An assembly as set forth in claim 23 including a mounting base (32) integrally formed with at least one of said portions (16,18) for further securing said one of said portions (16,18) to the support surface (14).
- 25. An assembly as set forth in claim 24 wherein said first (16) and second (18) portions comprise hollow and unitary bodies and said first portion (16) defines an elongate storage opening (40) therein and has a bench support surface (28) and a back support surface (30) and said second portion (18) includes an outer face (42) that is curved and an inner face (44) defining a ledge (46) therein spaced from said outer face (42).
- 26. A watercraft (12), comprising:
a deck (14); a first portion (16) positioned on said deck (14); a second portion (18) positioned on said deck (14) and spaced from said first portion (16); a plurality of connector panels (52,54) separable from and independent of said first (16) and second (18) portions for interconnecting said first (16) and second (18) portions to facilitate construction of a seat assembly (10); a plurality of locking tabs (56) attached to one of said connector panels (52,54) and said portions (16,18) and a plurality of slots (58) defined in the other of said connector panels (52,54) and said portions (16,18) for receiving said locking tabs (56) to connect said connector panels (52,54) and said portions (16,18); and a mounting bracket (84) attached to each of said connector panels (52,54) and fastened to said deck (14) thereby securing said first (16) and second (18) portions to said deck (14).
- 27. A method of assembling a seat assembly (10) on a support surface (14) wherein the seat assembly (10) comprises first (16) and second (18) portions and at least one connector panel (52) for interconnecting the first (16) and second (18) portions, said method comprising the steps of:
positioning the first portion (16) on the support surface (14); positioning the second portion (18) on the support surface (14) spaced from the position of the first portion (16); interconnecting the first (16) and second (18) portions with the connector panel (52); and mounting the connector panel (52) to the support surface (14) to secure the connector panel (52) and the first (16) and second (18) portions to the support surface (14).
- 28. A method as assembling a seat assembly (10) as set forth in claim 25 wherein the step of mounting the connector panel (52) to the support surface (14) further includes the step of fastening a mounting bracket (84) to the support surface (14).
- 29. A method of assembling a seat assembly (10) as set forth in claim 28 wherein the step of interconnecting the first (16) and second (18) portions further includes the step of inserting a plurality of locking tabs (56) extending from the connector panel (52) into a plurality of slots (58) defined in the first (16) and second (18) portions.
- 30. A method of assembling a seat assembly (10) as set forth in claim 29 wherein the step of inserting the plurality of locking tabs (56) into the plurality of slots (58) further includes the step of cradling outer walls (20) of the first (16) and second (18) portions to further secure the portions (16,18) to the support surface (14).
- 31. A method of assembling a seat assembly (10) as set forth in claim 30 further including the step of interconnecting the first (16) and second (18) portions with a second connector panel (54).
- 32. A method of assembling a seat assembly (10) as set forth in claim 31 wherein the step of interconnecting the first (16) and second (18) portions with the second connector panel (54) further includes the step of inserting a plurality of locking tabs (56) extending from the second connector panel (54) into a plurality of slots (58) defined in the first (16) and second (18) portions.
- 33. A method of assembling a seat assembly (10) as set forth in claim 32 further including the step of supporting a bench seat (110) by the first (16) and second (18) portions and the connector panels (52,54).
