Claims
- 1. An arrangement for bearing and retaining at least one externally accessible dial on a combination lock in a manner rendering the combination lock tamper-evident, the arrangement comprising:
- a support structure;
- the dial;
- integral beating/retaining member means, affixed to a first one of the support structure or dial, for physically bearing the dial during normal operation of the lock, for retaining the dial during normal operation of the lock, and for preventing the dial from being removed from the lock without causing visible damage; and
- clip means, extending between the bearing/retaining member means and a second one of the support structure or dial, for matingly engaging a slot and for preventing the clip means from being removed from mating engagement with the slot without causing visible damage.
- 2. The arrangement of claim 1, wherein the clip means includes:
- a leaf spring which exerts pressure against the slot so as to secure the bearing/retaining member means within the slot.
- 3. The arrangement of claim 2, wherein:
- the slot has a ridge which matingly engages the clip means so as to secure the clip means within the slot.
- 4. The arrangement of claim 1, wherein:
- the bearing/retaining member means is attached to the support structure.
- 5. The arrangement of claim 4, wherein: the slot is in the dial;
- the bearing/retaining member means includes the clip means;
- the clip means constitutes a spring which yields to allow the dial to be inserted into the lock; and
- the clip means mates with the slot in the dial to prevent the dial from being removed from the lock without causing visible physical damage.
- 6. The arrangement of claim 5, wherein:
- the dial is rotatable; and
- the slot is circular and allows the dial to freely rotate when the clip means engages the slot.
- 7. The arrangement of claim 6, wherein:
- the dial is ring-shaped and forms an empty interior space.
- 8. The arrangement of claim 7, further comprising:
- a second dial fitting within the empty interior space in the dial; and
- a second integral beating/retaining member means, affixed to a first one of the support structure or second dial for physically bearing the second dial and for retaining the second dial and preventing the second dial from being removed from the lock without causing visible damage.
- 9. The arrangement of claim 8, wherein:
- the second dial extends from a center of rotation to a first radial extent and has a diameter which is greater than a diameter of the empty interior space of the first, ring-shaped dial, so that the first, ring-shaped dial prevents removal of the second dial.
- 10. The arrangement of claim 6, wherein:
- the dial extends from a center of rotation to a first radial extent.
- 11. An arrangement for bearing and retaining at least one externally accessible dial on a combination lock, the arrangement comprising:
- a support structure;
- the dial, having a slot; and
- an integral bearing/retaining member, affixed to the support structure for physically bearing the dial, the bearing/retaining member including a clip which matingly engages the slot in the dial so that the clip cannot be removed from mating engagement with the slot without causing visible damage.
- 12. The arrangement of claim 11, wherein:
- the dial is ring-shaped and forms an empty interior space.
- 13. The arrangement of claim 12, further comprising:
- a second dial fitting within the empty interior space in the dial and having a second slot; and
- a second integral bearing/retaining member, affixed to the support structure for physically bearing the second dial, the second bearing/retaining member including a second clip which matingly engages the second slot in the second dial so that the second clip cannot be removed from mating engagement with the second slot without causing visible damage.
- 14. The arrangement of claim 13, wherein:
- the second dial extends from a center of rotation to a first radial extent and has a diameter which is greater than a diameter of the empty interior space of the first, ring-shaped dial, so that the first, ring-shaped dial prevents removal of the second dial.
- 15. The arrangement of claim 11, wherein:
- the dial extends from a center of rotation to a first radial extent.
- 16. An arrangement for bearing and retaining two externally accessible dials on a combination lock, the arrangement comprising:
- a support structure;
- a first, ting-shaped dial forming a hollow interior space, the first dial having a first slot;
- a first integral bearing/retaining member, affixed to the support structure for physically bearing the first dial, the first bearing/retaining member including a first clip which matingly engages the slot in the first dial so that the first clip cannot be removed from mating engagement with the first slot without causing visible damage;
- a second, inner dial occupying the hollow interior space of the first, ring-shaped dial, the second dial having a second slot; and
- a second integral beating/retaining member, affixed to the support structure for physically bearing the second dial, the second bearing/retaining member including a second clip which matingly engages the second slot in the second dial so that the second clip cannot be removed from mating engagement with the second slot without causing visible damage;
- wherein a diameter of the second, inner dial is greater than a diameter of the interior space formed by the first, ring-shaped dial, so that the first dial prevents removal of the second dial.
- 17. An arrangement for bearing and retaining at least one externally accessible dial on a combination lock in a manner rendering the combination lock tamper-evident, the arrangement comprising:
- a support structure;
- the dial;
- an integral bearing/retaining member, affixed to a first one of the support structure or dial and physically disposed between the support structure and the dial, for physically bearing the dial during normal operation of the lock, for retaining the dial during normal operation of the lock, and for preventing the dial from being removed from the lock without causing visible damage; and
- a clip, extending between the bearing/retaining member and a second one of the support structure or dial, for matingly engaging a slot and for preventing the clip from being removed from mating engagement with the slot without causing visible damage.
- 18. The arrangement of claim 17, wherein the clip includes:
- a leaf spring which exerts pressure against the slot so as to secure the bearing/retaining member within the slot.
- 19. The arrangement of claim 18, wherein:
- the slot has a ridge which matingly engages the clip so as to secure the clip within the slot.
- 20. The arrangement of claim 17, wherein:
- the bearing/retaining member is attached to the support structure.
- 21. The arrangement of claim 20, wherein:
- the slot is in the dial;
- the bearing/retaining member includes the clip;
- the clip constitutes a spring which yields to allow the dial to be inserted into the lock; and
- the clip mates with the slot in the dial to prevent the dial from being removed from the lock without causing visible physical damage.
- 22. The arrangement of claim 21, wherein:
- the dial is rotatable; and
- the slot is circular and allows the dial to freely rotate when the clip engages the slot.
- 23. The arrangement of claim 22, wherein:
- the dial is ting-shaped and forms an empty interior space.
- 24. The arrangement of claim 23, further comprising:
- a second dial fitting within the empty interior space in the dial; and
- a second integral bearing/retaining member, affixed to a first one of the support structure or second dial for physically bearing the second dial and for retaining the second dial and preventing the second dial from being removed from the lock without causing visible damage.
- 25. The arrangement of claim 24, wherein:
- the second dial extends from a center of rotation to a first radial extent and has a diameter which is greater than a diameter of the empty interior space of the first, ring-shaped dial, so that the first, ring-shaped dial prevents removal of the second dial.
