Claims
- 1. A reclosable package comprising:
(a) a surrounding wall defining an interior, a bottom portion, and a mouth opposite the bottom portion;
(i) the mouth having an open position and a closed position;
(A) the mouth providing access to the interior, when the mouth is in the open position; (ii) the surrounding wall including first and second, opposite panel sections;
(A) the first and second panel sections defining an integral hood construction; the hood construction being in covering relation to the mouth; (B) the hood construction including a top seal region at an end of the package opposite the bottom portion; the top seal region including the first and second panel sections being sealed along respective edge portions of the first and second panel sections; (b) a zipper closure extending along the mouth; the zipper closure including first and second releasably interlocking closure profiles;
(i) the first and second closure profiles connected to the first and second panel sections at first and second bonding regions; (ii) the zipper closure being covered by the hood construction; and (c) a slider device operably mounted on the zipper closure; the slider device constructed and arranged to move the mouth to the closed position by interlocking the first closure profile with the second closure profile when the slider device is moved in a first direction, and to move the mouth to the open position by disengaging the first closure profile from the second closure profile when the slider device is moved in a second opposite direction;
(i) the slider device being covered by the hood construction.
- 2. The package according to claim 1, wherein:
(a) the hood construction includes at least one area of weakness to provide for selective removal of the hood construction from the first and second panel sections to expose the slider device and the zipper closure.
- 3. The package according to claim 1, further comprising:
(a) first and second side edges joining the first and second panel sections between the top seal region and the bottom portion.
- 4. The package according to claim 3, wherein:
(a) the zipper closure includes first and second slider stops; and (b) the slider device is positioned between the first and second slider stops.
- 5. The package according to claim 4, wherein:
(a) the first and second slider stops are spaced at least 1 mm from the first and second side edges.
- 6. The package according to claim 4, wherein:
(a) the first and second slider stops are immediately adjacent the first and second side edges.
- 7. The package according to claim 4, wherein
(a) the first and second slider stops are adjacent tapered seal areas.
- 8. The package according to claim 4, wherein:
(a) the first and second slider stops extend essentially parallel to the first and second side edges.
- 9. The package according to claim 4, wherein:
(a) the first and second slider stops extend at an angle to the first and second side edges.
- 10. The package according to claim 4, wherein:
(a) the first and second slider stops comprises areas of ultrasonically crushed polymeric material.
- 11. The package according to claim 4, wherein:
(a) the slider device is operably mounted on the zipper closure between the first slider stop and the second slider stop.
- 12. The package according to claim 2, wherein:
(a) the at least one area of weakness comprises one of a perforation line, a score line, and a die line.
- 13. The package according to claim 12, wherein:
(a) the at least one area of weakness is oriented between a bottommost portion of the slider device and the at least one of the first and second bonding regions.
- 14. The package according to claim 12, wherein:
(a) the at least one area of weakness is oriented essentially adjacent the zipper closure.
- 15. The package according to claim 12, wherein:
(a) the at least one area of weakness is oriented between the top seal region and a bottommost portion of the slider device.
- 16. The package according to claim 12, wherein:
(a) at least a portion of the at least one area of weakness extends parallel to the zipper closure.
- 17. The package according to claim 16, wherein:
(a) the at least one area of weakness extends parallel to the zipper closure.
- 18. The package according to claim 16, wherein:
(a) a first portion of the at least one area of weakness extends parallel to the zipper closure; (b) a second portion of the at least one area of weakness extends perpendicular to the zipper closure; and (c) a third portion of the at least one area of weakness extends perpendicular to the zipper closure.
- 19. The package according to claim 1, wherein the hood construction includes:
(a) a first area of weakness to provide for selective removal of the hood construction from the first panel section; and (b) a second area of weakness to provide for selective removal of the hood construction from the second panel section.
- 20. The package according to claim 1, wherein:
(a) the first and second closure profiles are respectively heat sealed to the first and second panel sections at the first and second bonding regions.
- 21. The package according to claim 1, further comprising a bottom gusset.
- 22. A method of opening a package, the package comprising first and second panel sections defining an interior, a zipper closure defining a mouth having an open position and a closed position, the zipper closure having a slider device operably mounted on first and second closure profiles, and a hood construction integral with the first and second panel sections, the hood covering the zipper closure and the slider device; the method comprising:
(a) penetrating the hood by:
(i) breaching the hood; (ii) removing the hood from the surrounding wall; and (iii) exposing the slider device and the zipper closure; (b) moving the slider device along the zipper closure to unmate the closure profiles; and (c) opening the mouth of the package to gain access to the package interior.
- 23. The method according to claim 22, wherein the step of moving the slider device along the zipper closure comprises:
(a) moving the slider device until a bumper on the slider device abuts a slider stop area on the zipper closure.
- 24. The method according to claim 22, wherein the hood comprises at least one area of weakness, and the step of penetrating the hood comprises:
(a) breaching the hood at the at least one area of weakness.
- 25. The method according to claim 24, wherein the step of breaching the hood at the at least one area of weakness comprises:
(a) breaching the hood at an area of weakness being below a bottommost portion of the slider device.
- 26. The method according to claim 25, wherein the step of breaching the hood at an area of weakness being below a bottommost portion of the slider device comprises:
(a) breaching the hood at an area of weakness being between the bottommost portion of the slider device and a region of bonding between the first and second panel sections and the zipper closure.
- 27. A method of making a package comprising:
(a) providing a package wall having an interior surface; (b) attaching a zipper closure to the interior surface of the package wall; (c) mounting a slider device onto the zipper closure; (d) orienting the package wall to form a surrounding structure with an open interior; and (e) forming a hood over the zipper closure and the slider device by:
(i) sealing the surrounding wall above the zipper closure and the slider device.
- 28. The method according to claim 27, wherein the step of mounting a slider device onto the zipper closure is done before the step of attaching a zipper closure to the interior surface of the surrounding wall.
- 29. The method according to claim 27, wherein the step of forming a hood over the zipper closure and the slider device by sealing the surrounding wall above the zipper closure and the slider device comprises:
(a) forming a hood over the zipper closure and the slider device applying heat and pressure to the surrounding wall at a top seal region to form a top flange seal.
- 30. The method according to claim 27, wherein the step of forming a hood over the zipper closure and the slider device further comprises:
(a) providing at least one area of weakness within the hood, the at least one area of weakness positioned between the zipper closure and the open interior.
