Claims
- 1. A magnetic tape cartridge for supplying a particular one of a plurality of types of magnetic tape to a magnetic tape cartridge storage subsystem, the types differing from one another by at least one of tape web thickness, maximum magnetic recording density, magnetic coercivity, and cartridge type, the magnetic tape cartridge comprising:
- a generally box-shaped housing,
- a tape feed reel rotatable contained within the box-shaped housing for holding a spool of the one of the plurality of types of magnetic tape thereon and for alternatively feeding and collecting the spool during tape usage by a cartridge-compatible tape drive, and
- a supply of light-opaque magnetic tape spooled on the tape feed reel, the magnetic tape defining:
- a beginning of tape (BOT) light-transmissive aperture positioned proximate a first end of the tape, the BOT aperture indicating a beginning of a user data storage area of the tape,
- an end of tape (EOT) light-transmissive aperture positioned proximate a second end of the tape, the EOT aperture indicating an end of the user data storage area of the tape, and
- a tape type (TT) light-transmissive aperture positioned a predetermined type-qualifying longitudinal distance from the BOT aperture and aligned with the BOT aperture, the TT aperture having a tape-identifying light-transmissive geometry relative to the BOT aperture predetermined to identify the particular one of the plurality of tape types,
- wherein a measured interval of light transmission from a light source through the TT aperture past an aligned light sensor during tape travel from the tape feed reel to a tape take-up reel within the tape drive identifies upon type-qualification the particular one of the plurality of tape types contained within the magnetic tape cartridge.
- 2. The magnetic tape cartridge of claim 1, wherein the TT aperture has a circular geometry and has one of a plurality of predetermined diameters for indicating the particular one of the plurality of types of magnetic tape.
- 3. The magnetic tape cartridge of claim 1, wherein the TT aperture has a non-circular geometry with a longitudinal dimension exceeding a transverse dimension relative to the tape.
- 4. The magnetic tape cartridge of claim 1 wherein the tape is unformatted.
- 5. The magnetic tape cartridge of claim 1 wherein the light-transmissive TT aperture is a physical hole extending through the tape.
- 6. A magnetic tape cartridge storage and retrieval subsystem for recording and playing back digital data from a magnetic tape of a tape cartridge having one of a plurality of magnetic tape types, the tape cartridge including a tape feed reel having one of the magnetic tape types spooled thereon, the magnetic tape having a BOT hole and a EOT hole near respective ends thereof, the tape cartridge storage and retrieval subsystem comprising:
- (a) a receiver for accepting the tape cartridge;
- (b) a take-up reel for holding the magnetic tape from the tape cartridge thereon;
- (c) a mechanism for engaging a BOT end of the magnetic tape and spooling the tape onto the take-up reel;
- (d) measurement means for measuring a magnetic tape velocity and a take-up reel velocity;
- (e) means for sensing the BOT bole and BOT hole;
- (f) a measurement circuit for measuring a distance "d," along a longitudinal axis of the magnetic tape, from the BOT hole to a TT hole, and for generating a TT hole location value;
- (g) a qualification circuit responsive to the TT hole location value for qualifying the location of the TT hole;
- (h) a TT hole duration measurement circuit for sensing a duration of the TV hole and generating a TT hole duration value;
- (i) a tape type, determining circuit for comparing the TT hole duration value with a plurality of pre-stored TT hole reference values to determine a particular magnetic tape type; and
- (d) a tape formatting circuit responsive to the determined tape type for formatting the magnetic tape.
- 7. The magnetic tape cartridge storage and retrieval subsystem of claim 6, wherein the means for sensing the BOT hole and EOT hole comprises a light source on one side of the tape positioned in alignment with the BOT and EOT holes and a photo-detector diametrically opposed to the light source for generating an electrical signal representative of the BOT and EOT holes.
- 8. The magnetic tape cartridge storage and retrieval subsystem of claim 6, wherein the TT hole is defined as a circular hole having a diameter which is varied in size in order to indicate the particular tape type.
- 9. The magnetic tape cartridge set forth in claim 6, wherein the TT hole is defined as a non-circular hole having a longitudinal dimension exceeding a transverse dimension.
