Description
BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION

The present invention generally relates to a tape dispenser bag. More specifically, the tape dispenser bag includes an enclosure having a size and shape to facilitate pullout dispensing of a roll of material through an exposed slot in its box packaging when the box packaging resides within the enclosure of the tape dispenser bag.

Raw materials used at construction sites such as professional grade metal construction tape, plastic tape rolls, and fabric rolls are usually sold in containers that are not designed to have any useful life outside transporting the roll of material through the supply chain to the construction site. In one example, professional grade metal construction tape is typically sold in generic six-sided cardboard boxes, e.g., as illustrated in FIG. 1 with respect to one such exemplary cardboard box 20. The cardboard box 20 is usually semi or fully disassembled, e.g., as illustrated in FIG. 2, to gain access to a tape ribbon 22 stored inside. Once open, the tape ribbon 22 can be removed out from within the cardboard box 20 for use at a jobsite or the like. Although, after opening the cardboard box 20 (FIG. 2), it is generally difficult, and at least inconvenient, to try and reassemble the cardboard box 20 to again store the tape ribbon 22 therein for later use. Even if one were inclined to reuse the cardboard box 20, continued reuse necessarily requires repeat disassembly and reassembly, which degrades the cardboard sidewalls over time. As such, the cardboard box 20 tends to eventually fall apart as the connecting cardboard sidewalls no longer remain rigidly affixed together. Furthermore, the relatively soft exterior of the cardboard box 20 may also get wet and is particularly prone to damage at the jobsite, thereby also decreasing the usability and integrity of the box sidewalls over time. As such, the disassembled cardboard box 20 is typically discarded as waste or recycled at the jobsite once opened and the tape ribbon 22 has been removed.

Once removed from the cardboard box 20, the tape ribbon 22 is typically at least hand carried among various locations within a single jobsite, and may be transported in and among multiple jobsites if the entire tape ribbon 22 is not entirely used in a single application. One problem is that the now exposed tape ribbon 22 can be damaged if it bends or is dented after being removed from the cardboard box 20, which is an inherent probability in and around construction zones having debris laying around. For example, setting the unprotected tape ribbon 22 down on dirty or uneven construction surfaces (e.g., which may have nails or the like) may result in undesirable damage as the tape ribbon 22 is no longer protected by the cardboard box 20. Moreover, after being cut, the tape ribbon 22 may also have one or more sharp edges such that an exposed free end 24 of the tape ribbon 22 may tend to cut fingers, hands, arms, or other parts of the body as a result of accidental contact therewith.

One prior art dispenser disclosed in U.S. Pat. No. 11,407,607, the contents of which are incorporated by reference in its entirety, is designed to retain the tape ribbon 22 within a rigid housing or enclosure, and includes a dispensing outlet that provides added shielding of the sharp or jagged free end 24 from accidental contact with the body. While the dispenser disclosed in the '607 patent is certainly a better solution and more robust than using the tape ribbon 22 alone, it is relatively expensive to manufacture whereby installers may still desire to use a simpler and more compact or less costly design.

In this respect, one alternative to the dispenser disclosed in the '607 patent, and one that many installers have used over the years, is to retrofit the cardboard box 20 as the dispenser itself. Here, rather than disassembling the cardboard box 20 to gain access to the tape ribbon 22 therein, the cardboard box 20 is minimally modified so the free end 24 of the tape ribbon 22 is able to pass through a slot or the like (e.g., manually cut into one of the cardboard sidewalls; or between two adjoining sidewalls) for dispensing during use. Here, the cardboard box 20 remains substantially intact during use and the tape ribbon 22 remains within the cardboard box 20 during transportation and use. Although, this solution still does not prevent the relatively soft cardboard sidewalls from being exposed to external and potentially damaging elements of the construction site, including water. Another drawback is that the cardboard box 20 and the tape ribbon 22 are not designed to fasten to the user, e.g., for purposes of portability. Therefore, a user moving about a worksite must still carry the cardboard box 20 with at least one hand. This can also inhibit safety as users who frequently climb ladders may find carrying the cardboard box 20 and/or the tape ribbon 22 with one hand to be extremely inconvenient or difficult. At a minimum, requiring the user to hold either the cardboard box 20 or the tape ribbon 22 while climbing a ladder reduces safety by preventing the user from holding the ladder with two hands. Ultimately, the limitations of the cardboard box 20, which is not designed to be anything more than a container to transport the tape ribbon 22 inside anyway, provides limited benefits with respect to the use of the tape ribbon 22 at the jobsite as a result.

There exists, therefore, a need in the art for a tape dispenser bag that includes an enclosure for securely retaining a container therein and an access opening for pull-out dispensing of the tape ribbon for use at the jobsite, and of which includes an attachment for on-body and hands-free transportation at a construction site. The present invention fulfills these needs and provides further related advantages.

SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION

In one embodiment as disclosed herein, a tape dispenser bag may include an enclosure defined by a front wall, a rear wall, a pair of opposing sidewalls, and a bottom wall that all cooperate with one another to form an inner cavity having a size and shape for select reception and retainment of a rolled tape ribbon (e.g., made from a metal, plastic, or fabric material), which may be made from a metal material, a plastic material, or a fabric material. At least one of the pair of opposing sidewalls includes a slot having a height and a width sufficient for pass through dispensing of a strip of the rolled tape ribbon out from within the inner cavity of the tape dispenser bag, such as by one-handed operation at a worksite or the like. In one embodiment, the slot may be a cutout formed from within at least one of the pair of opposing sidewalls.

Additionally, in these embodiments, the tape dispenser bag may also include a closing flap selectively movable between an open position exposing the inner cavity for select insertion and removal of the rolled tape ribbon, and a closed position at least partially overlying an upper opening of the enclosure. When in the closed position, the closing flap may be selectively attachable to at least one of the front wall or the rear wall in an overlying relationship relative to the rolled tape ribbon residing within the enclosure. Here, the closing flap may cooperate with at least one of the pair of opposing sidewalls when in the closed position to form the slot, and the closing flap may more specifically selectively attach to at least a portion of an exterior surface of the front wall by at least one strap to retain the flap in the closed position. In some embodiments, the at least one strap may include a snap-fit clip, a snap-fit button, or a hook and loop fastener. Alternatively, the closing flap may selectively attach to the upper opening by a zipper. In one embodiment, the front wall and the rear wall may be relatively wider than the pair of opposing sidewalls, wherein the enclosure has a relatively rectangular shape and the closing flap is designed to overlay at least part of the rectangular opening the rolled tape ribbon is designed to slide into and out from.

In another aspect of these embodiments, the tape dispenser bag may also include a handle outwardly extending from the enclosure to facilitate handless carrying, such as over the shoulder of a user. Alternatively, or in addition to, the tape dispenser bag may further include a belt loop coupled to an exterior surface of the rear wall having an elongated channel for select slide-through reception with a belt. The tape dispenser bag may also include accessories that selectively or permanently couple to an exterior surface thereof, such as a nutsetter carrier or an accessory compartment having a lid movable between open and closed positions to securely store hardware therein, such as may be needed for use with the rolled tape ribbon while working at the jobsite.

With respect to the construction of the tape dispenser bag, each of the front wall, the rear wall, the pair of opposing sidewalls, and the bottom wall may be made from a material such as a water-resistant material, a water-proof material, a metal material, a plastic material, a polyester material, a nylon material, a leather material, or a denim material. More specifically, the metal material may be a stainless steel material, an aluminum material, or a titanium material, and the plastic material may be polyethylene.

In another embodiment, a tape dispenser bag as disclosed herein may include a multi-sided enclosure having an opening of a size and shape for select slide-in reception of a container retaining a rolled tape ribbon (e.g., made from a metal, plastic, or fabric material) therein. Here, the multi-sided enclosure includes a depth that positions the container therein above at least part of an upper rim of the opening, and may include a slot of a size sufficient for pass through dispensing of a strip of the rolled tape ribbon out from within the multi-sided enclosure. Moreover, the tape dispenser bag may also include a coupling integrated with the multi-sided enclosure for selectively attaching the tape dispenser bag to a user in a position where the strip of the rolled tape ribbon is externally accessible outside the multi-sided enclosure for one-handed dispensing from the tape dispenser bag while at the jobsite.

The tape dispenser bag may also include an upper flap selectively extendable over an upper portion of the container outwardly protruding from the opening and selectively couplable to an exterior of the multi-sided enclosure to help hold or retain the container within the multi-sided enclosure. In one embodiment, the flap may include a pair of straps, where each of the pair of straps includes a fastener such as releasable snap-fit clip or a snap-fit button. In another embodiment, the flap may include one of a hook or loop fastener that selectively couples with a reciprocal hook or loop fastener on an exterior surface of the multi-sided enclosure. In another embodiment, a zipper may secure at least a portion of an outer periphery of the flap to at least a portion of the upper rim of the opening to help retain the box within the multi-sided enclosure during use.

The coupling, e.g., may be a shoulder strap that outwardly extends from the multi-sided enclosure, and may be of a length conducive for wearing the tape dispenser bag over the shoulder to facilitate one-handed operation or dispensing of the rolled tape therein. In another embodiment, the coupling may be a belt loop coupled to an exterior surface of the multi-sided enclosure having a size and shape for select slide-through reception with a belt. In this embodiment, the tape dispenser may be worn on the belt of a user, also to facilitate one-handed operation therewith. The tape dispenser bag in these embodiments may also be made of a water-resistant material, a water proof material, a metal material, a leather material, a denim material, or a plastic material.

In another embodiment, the tape dispenser bag may include an enclosure having an inner cavity sized to receive and retain a container retaining a rolled tape ribbon therein, a channel formed from the enclosure exterior to the inner cavity having a size sufficient for slide through reception of a belt, and a slotted outlet formed from the enclosure having a size and shape sufficient for one-handed pass through dispensing of a strip of the rolled tape ribbon out from within the enclosure when the tape dispenser bag is attached to the belt of a user through slotted engagement with the channel.

In another embodiment as disclosed herein, the tape dispenser bag may include an enclosure generally defined by a front wall, a rear wall, two opposing side walls, and a bottom wall that cooperate to form an inner cavity having a size and shape for select reception and retainment of a container housing a tape ribbon therein, such as one made from metal, plastic, or fabric. Here, the inner cavity may have a width and a depth relatively larger than a width and a depth of the container, and a height of the inner cavity may be relatively shorter than a height of the container. As such, at least a portion of the container may thus extend up out from the inner cavity, thereby providing access to the container and the tape ribbon inside for purposes of dispensing.

The tape dispenser bag may also include a closing flap that selectively extends over the exposed upper portion of the container and may couple to at least a portion of the enclosure to secure the container therein. The closing flap may include a zipper selectively coupled near an upper edge of the front wall or the rear wall of the enclosure, thereby further retaining the container within the inner cavity when enclosed over the exposed upper portion of the container. The tape dispenser bag may also include a pair of straps that selectively couple to an exterior surface of the front wall or the rear wall of the enclosure via snap-fit clips, snap-fit buttons, or hook and loop fasteners. In alternative embodiments, at least one of the opposing side walls may include a window having a size and shape for pull-through dispensing of the tape ribbon inside the container.

In another embodiment, the tape dispenser bag may include a handle outwardly extending from the enclosure having a size and shape for hand grasping. A belt loop may couple to an exterior surface of the rear wall and cooperate therewith to form an elongated channel having a size and shape for slide-through reception with a belt for on-person transportation. Here, the tape dispenser bag may be carried by the belt without the need to carry the container or the tape ribbon therein. Moreover, the tape dispenser bag may also include a nutsetter carrier coupled to an exterior surface of the front wall and include one or more apertures for select reception and retention of one or more nutsetter accessories. In another embodiment, the tape dispenser bag may include an accessory compartment coupled to the front exterior surface of the front wall and include a container having a size and shape to selectively house and retain tools and/or hardware. The accessory component may include a lid moveable between an open and closed position to secure the tools and/or hardware therein.

In another alternative embodiment, the tape dispenser bag may also be made of a water-resistant or waterproof material such as polyester, nylon, or plastic. Alternatively, the tape dispenser bag may be made from a metal such as stainless steel, aluminum, or titanium. In other embodiments, the tape dispenser bag may be made from leather, denim, or a plastic material such as polyethylene.

In another embodiment, the tape dispenser bag may include an enclosure having an inner cavity sized to receive and retain a conventional cardboard box containing a professional tape ribbon therein and a slotted outlet for dispensing the tape ribbon out from within the enclosure and the cardboard box when attached to a user, e.g., by way of a belt loop.

DETAILED DESCRIPTION OF THE PREFERRED EMBODIMENTS

As shown in the exemplary drawings for purposes of illustration, the present invention for a tape dispenser bag is generally illustrated in FIGS. 3-9 with respect to reference numeral 26. In general, the tape dispenser bag 26 as disclosed herein is designed as an improvement and more permanent solution over carrying the cardboard box 20 and the like housing the spiral-wound tape ribbon 22, e.g., which may be made of metal, plastic or fabric, therein alone. More specifically, the tape dispenser bag 26 may include an enclosure 28 generally defined by a front wall 30, a rear wall 32 (FIG. 8), a pair of opposing side walls 34, 36, and a bottom 38 (FIG. 5), all of which cooperate to form an inner cavity 40 for selectively receiving a container 20′ designed to hold or retain therein any one of the different types of the tape ribbons 22 mentioned above, as illustrated, e.g., in FIGS. 4-7 and 9. This provides improved portability and added protection during use and transportation.

In one embodiment, as illustrated, e.g., in FIGS. 5-6, the enclosure 28 has a width 42 and a depth 44 relatively larger than a width 46 and a depth 48 of the container 20′, respectively. Furthermore, as illustrated in FIG. 5, the enclosure 28 has a height 50 relatively shorter than a height 52 of the container 20′. This permits at least a portion of the container 20′ to extend up and out of the enclosure 28 to provide access thereto while the container 20′ is selectively carried within the enclosure 28.

As best illustrated in FIGS. 4 and 6, the container 20′ includes a slot 54 formed at an upper portion thereof generally between where a sidewall 56 (FIG. 6) intersects a top wall 57 (FIG. 4) thereof. The slot 54 may be formed naturally as a result of this, or the slot 54 may be formed by cutting an opening therein. In the latter embodiment, the slot 54 may be generally cut anywhere along the height of the sidewall 56 so long as the tape ribbon 22 may dispense out from the tape dispenser bag 26 in accordance with the embodiments disclosed herein. In this respect, the slot 54 is at least somewhat larger than the material thickness and the material width of the spiral-wound tape ribbon 22 to permit unwinding removal of the tape ribbon 22 out from within the container 20′. In the embodiment best illustrated in FIGS. 4-7 and 9, the height 50 of the enclosure 28 is smaller than the height 52 of the container 20′ as to avoid structurally interfering with pulling the free end 24 of the tape ribbon 22 through the slot 54. While FIGS. 4 and 6 illustrate the slot 54 generally formed from the sidewall 56 of the container 20′, the slot 54 could be formed from any of the sidewalls of the container 20′ so long as the free end 24 can pull out for dispensing therefrom.

For example, in an alternative embodiment, as illustrated in FIG. 6, at least one of the side walls 34, 36 of the enclosure 28 may include a window 58 formed therein having a size and shape large enough to pull the free end 24 of the tape ribbon 22 therethrough. Here, the user may initially pull the free end 24 of the tape ribbon 22 out through the slot 54 and then down through the window 58. Alternatively, the user may retrofit the container 20′ by cutting the slot 54 along the height of the sidewall 56 in a position generally aligned with the window 58 of the enclosure 28, so the free end 24 of the tape ribbon 22 can pull straight out from the container 20′ and the tape dispenser bag 26. In another alternative embodiment, the tape ribbon 22 may also be removed from the container 20′ and selectively inserted into the enclosure 28 so the user can pull the free end 24 of the tape ribbon 22 through the window 58 and/or out the top of the inner cavity 40 without interference from the container 20′. The window 58 may be approximately the size of the slot 54 in the container 20′, as described above, somewhat larger than the thickness and the width of the tape ribbon 22 (e.g., regardless whether the tape ribbon 22 is dispensed from the container 20′ or placed directly in the enclosure 28 without the container 20′) or otherwise a relatively larger rectangular and/or square shape large enough to allow passage of the tape ribbon 22 therethrough.

As best illustrated in FIGS. 3-5, 7, and 9, the tape dispenser bag 26 may also include a closing flap 60 having a size and shape to selectively extend up over and generally encompass the top wall 57 of the container 20′. In one embodiment, the closing flap 60 may further couple to at least a portion of the enclosure 28 to selectively retain the container 20′ within the inner cavity 40. For example, the closing flap 60 may include a zipper 62 that selectively couples the closing flap 60 to an upper edge 64 of the front wall 30 of the enclosure 28. The closing flap 60 may also include a pair of straps 66, 68 extending over the container 20′ that selectively coupled to a front surface 70 of the front wall 30. For example, each of the straps 66, 68 may include a respective set of snap-clips that selectively engage a pair of snap-clip receptacles coupled to the front surface 70, or vice versa.

In another embodiment, the straps 66, 68 may couple to the front surface 70 via as series of hook and loop fasteners, such as Velcro, wherein at least a portion of the straps 66, 68 include the hooks and at least a portion of the front surface 70 include the loops, or vice versa. This allows the closing flap 60 to be quickly and easily secured over the top wall 57 of the container 20′, thereby locking the container 20′ inside the enclosure 40. Alternatively, substantially all of the front surface 70 may include the loops or hooks to permit adjustably positioning of the closing flap 60 over the top wall 57. Here, securing the straps 66, 68 further down the front surface 70 will more tightly retain the container 20′ within the enclosure 40, while securing the straps 66, 68 higher up on the front surface 70 will more loosely retain the container 20′ within the enclosure 40. Such adjustability also allows the tape dispenser bag 26 to be used with containers 20′ that differ in the height 52. Of course, in alternative embodiments, the straps 66, 68 may couple to the enclosure 28 via any fastener known in the art to secure the closing flap 60 at least partially over the top wall 57. Moreover, the closing flap 60 and/or the straps 66, 68 may couple to any part of the enclosure 28, including the front wall 30, the rear wall 32, the pair of opposing side walls 34, 36, and/or the bottom 38 to better retain the container 20′ and/or the tape ribbon 22 within the enclosure 40.

The tape dispenser bag 26 as disclosed herein may also include a handle 72 for convenient hand grasping and portability. For example, FIG. 8 illustrates one embodiment of the handle 72 generally having an arcuate shape extending out and away from the tape dispenser bag 26. Of course, the handle 72 may be any shape known in the art for convenient hand grasping and manipulation. In one embodiment, the handle 72 may be non-removably attached to the tape dispenser bag 26, e.g., by a set of stitching 74, 76 and/or by an adhesive. In alternative embodiments, the handle 72 may be removably attached via snap-fit clips, snap-fit buttons, hook and loop fasteners, and/or any other fastener known in the art. In yet another embodiment, the handle 72 may be formed from the tape dispenser bag 26, such as by way of being a single piece of fabric or molded plastic material.

As further illustrated in FIG. 8, the tape dispenser bag 26 may include a belt loop 78 generally projecting outwardly from a rear surface 80 of the rear wall 32. The belt loop 78 may have a generally arcuate shape with two opposing ends 82, 84 attached to the rear surface 80. The belt loop 78 cooperates with the rear surface 80 to form a relatively elongated channel 86 therebetween having a size and shape for slide-through reception and retention of a belt 88 (FIG. 9) or the like. As illustrated in FIG. 9, during use (e.g., when the tape dispenser bag 26 is worn on the belt 88), the inner cavity 40 may still be accessed for purposes of inserting and/or replacing the container 20′ and/or the tape ribbon 22 without removal from the belt loop 78, such as by way of disconnecting the straps 66, 68 from the front surface 70 and pulling back the closing flap 60 to expose the top wall 57 of the container 20′ for removal therefrom.

As best illustrated in FIGS. 3-5 and 7, the tape dispenser bag 26 may additionally include a nutsetter carrier 90 coupled to the front surface 70 of the front wall 30. As best illustrated in FIG. 4, the nutsetter carrier 90 may include one or more apertures 92 substantially situated in an upright position to selectively receive and retain one or more nutsetter accessories therein. In one embodiment, the nutsetter carrier 90 may be non-removably coupled to the front surface 70 via stitching, an adhesive, or the like. In an alternative embodiment, the nutsetter carrier 90 may be removably attached via snap-fit clips, snap-fit buttons, hook and loop fasteners, and/or any other fastener known in the art. While FIGS. 3-5 and 7 illustrate the nutsetter carrier 90 coupled to the front surface 70 of the front wall 30, the nutsetter carrier 90 may alternatively couple to any part of the enclosure 28, including the front wall 30, the rear wall 32, the pair of opposing side walls 34, 36, and/or the bottom 38.

In another embodiment, the tape dispenser bag 26 may also include an accessory compartment 96 coupled to the front surface 70 of the front wall 30, as generally illustrated in FIGS. 3-5 and 7. Here, the accessory compartment 96 includes a container 98 and an overlap 100 moveable between a closed position (FIGS. 3-4 and 7) and an open position (FIG. 5). The container 98 of the accessory compart 96 is externally accessible and may store tools or hardware such as screws, bolts, nuts, etc. The accessory compartment 96 may be non-removably coupled to the front surface 70 via stitching, an adhesive, or the like. In alternative embodiments, the accessory compartment 96 may be removably attached via snap-fit clips, snap-fit buttons, hook and loop fasteners, and/or any other fastener known in the art. Furthermore, while FIGS. 3-5 and 7 illustrate the accessory compartment 96 coupled to the front surface 70 of the front wall 30, alternatively, the accessory compartment 96 may couple to any part of the enclosure 28, including the front wall 30, the rear wall 32, the pair of opposing side walls 34, 36, and/or the bottom 38.

The tape dispenser bag 26 may be made from a water-resistant or waterproofed material to provide enhanced protection for the container 20′ and/or tape ribbon 22 selectively retained within the inner cavity 40. For example, the front wall 30, the rear wall 32, the side walls 34, 36, the bottom 38, the closing flap 60, the straps 66, 68, the handle 72, the belt loop 78, the nutsetter carrier 90, and/or the accessory compartment 96 may all, or individually, be made from nylon, polyester, plastic, etc. to guard against water damage or other sharp objects at a jobsite. Alternatively, the tape dispenser bag 26 may be made from another fabric or material known in the art, such as leather, denim, etc. In alternative embodiments, the front wall 30, the rear wall 32, the side walls 34, 36, the bottom 38, the closing flap 60, the straps 66, 68, the handle 72, the belt loop 78, the nutsetter carrier 90, the accessory compartment 96, and/or the accessory compartment 102 may all or individually be made from a metal material such as stainless steel, aluminum, titanium, or the like; or a high-density plastic such as polyethylene.

Although several embodiments have been described in detail for purposes of illustration, various modifications may be made without departing from the scope and spirit of the invention. Accordingly, the invention is not to be limited, except as by the appended claims.
