Claims
- 1. A tape drive system for driving idler rollers of a roller conveyor comprising:
a motorized roller having a roller portion, a mounting portion and an internal motor which is operable to rotate said roller portion relative to said mounting portion; a plurality of snubbers; and a tape reeved around said plurality of snubbers, said snubbers being configured and positionable to urge said tape into engagement with the idler rollers to drive the idler rollers in response to rotation of said roller portion of said motorized roller.
- 2. The tape drive system of claim 1, wherein said tape is reeved around said roller portion of said motorized roller and said plurality of snubbers.
- 3. The tape drive system of claim 2, wherein said motorized roller, said snubbers and said tape are positionable underneath the idler rollers and said tape is urged into engagement with a lower surface of the idler rollers by said snubbers.
- 4. The tape drive system of claim 2, wherein said tape is reeved around said roller portion of said motorized roller, said plurality of snubbers and an adjustable end roller, said adjustable end roller being adjustable to adjust a tension in said tape.
- 5. The tape drive system of claim 2, wherein said motorized roller and said plurality of snubbers are mounted to a side frame which is adapted to be mounted to a sidewall of the roller conveyor.
- 6. The tape drive system of claim 5, wherein said motorized roller is mounted at opposite ends to a mounting bracket at said side frame of said tape drive system.
- 7. The tape drive system of claim 1, wherein said motorized roller is mounted between the sidewalls of the roller conveyor, said roller portion of said motorized roller and said idler rollers defining a conveying surface of the roller conveyor.
- 8. The tape drive system of claim 7, wherein said motorized roller is positioned at a downstream end of said roller conveyor.
- 9. The tape drive system of claim 7, wherein said snubbers urge said tape into engagement with said roller portion of said motorized roller and said idler rollers.
- 10. The tape drive system of claim 7 including a control operable to selectively activate and deactivate said motor of said motorized roller.
- 11. The tape drive system of claim 10 including at least one article sensor positionable along said roller conveyor and operable to sense articles being conveyed along said roller conveyor, said control being operable to selectively activate and deactivate said motor of said motorized roller in response to said at least one article sensor.
- 12. The tape drive system of claim 10 including a current sensor operable to sense the current draw of said motorized roller, said control being operable to selectively activate and deactivate said motor of motorized roller in response to said current sensor.
- 13. A roller conveyor comprising:
a plurality of idler rollers rotatably mounted at and between opposite sidewalls of said roller conveyor; a tape drive system comprising:
a directly driven roller having a roller portion, a mounting portion and a motor, said motor being selectably operable to directly drive said roller portion relative to said mounting portion, said mounting portion being mountable to said sidewalls; a plurality of snubbers; and a tape reeved around said plurality of snubbers, said snubbers being configured and positioned to urge said tape into engagement with said idler rollers to drive said idler rollers in response to rotation of said roller portion of said directly driven roller.
- 14. The roller conveyor of claim 13, wherein said tape is reeved around said roller portion of said directly driven roller and said plurality of snubbers.
- 15. The roller conveyor of claim 14, wherein said directly driven roller, said snubbers and said tape are positioned underneath said idler rollers and said tape is urged into engagement with a lower surface of said idler rollers by at least some of said directly driven roller and said snubbers.
- 16. The roller conveyor of claim 15, wherein said tape is urged into generally continuous engagement with said lower surface of said idler rollers.
- 17. The roller conveyor of claim 14, wherein said tape is reeved around said roller portion of said directly driven roller, said plurality of snubbers and an adjustable end roller, said adjustable end roller being adjustable to adjust a tension in said tape.
- 18. The roller conveyor of claim 14, wherein said directly driven roller and said plurality of snubbers are mounted to a side frame of said tape drive system, said side frame being removably mounted to one of said sidewalls of said roller conveyor.
- 19. The roller conveyor of claim 18, wherein said mounting portion of said directly driven roller is mounted at at least one end to a mounting bracket extending from said side frame of said tape drive system.
- 20. The roller conveyor of claim 19, wherein said roller portion of said directly driven roller has a first length and said idler rollers have a second length, said second length being greater than said first length.
- 21. The roller conveyor of claim 13, wherein said directly driven roller is mounted between said sidewalls of said roller conveyor, said roller portion of said directly driven roller and said idler rollers defining a conveying surface of said roller conveyor.
- 22. The roller conveyor of claim 21, wherein said snubbers urge said tape into engagement with said roller portion of said directly driven roller and said idler rollers.
- 23. The roller conveyor of claim 13, wherein said roller conveyor comprises at least two tandem zones, each zone comprising a plurality of said idler rollers and said directly driven roller, said directly driven rollers being selectively operable to provide accumulation of at least two articles in each of said zones.
- 24. The roller conveyor of claim 23 including at least one control operable to selectively activate and deactivate said motors of said directly driven rollers.
- 25. The roller conveyor of claim 24, wherein each zone includes an article sensor operable to sense articles being conveyed along that zone, said at least one control being operable to selectively activate and deactivate said motors of said directly driven rollers in response to said article sensors.
- 26. The roller conveyor of claim 25, wherein said at least one control and said directly driven rollers are operable in response to said article sensors to accumulate at least two articles in said zones.
- 27. The roller conveyor of claim 24 including a current sensor operable to sense the current draw of said motor of each of said directly driven rollers, said at least one control being operable to selectively activate and deactivate said motors of said directly driven rollers in response to said current sensor.
- 28. The roller conveyor of claim 23, wherein said directly driven roller of each of said at least two tandem zones is operable independently from other directly driven rollers of other tandem zones.
- 29. The roller conveyor of claim 13, wherein said tape is configured to slip relative to said lower portion of said at least some of said idler rollers to allow for coasting of an article along said idler rollers when said motor of said directly driven roller is deactivated.
- 30. The roller conveyor of claim 13, wherein said directly driven roller comprises a motorized roller, said motor being at least partially within said roller portion of said directly driven roller.
- 31. The roller conveyor of claim 13, wherein said motor of said directly driven roller is mounted at said sidewall of said conveyor and operable to directly drive said roller portion relative to said mounting portion.
- 32. The roller conveyor of claim 31, wherein said motor is mounted at least partially within said sidewall and at an angle with respect to an axis of rotation of said roller portion, said directly driven roller including a gear box operable to drive said roller portion in response to said motor.
- 33. A roller conveyor comprising:
at least two tandem zones, each zone comprising a plurality of idler rollers rotatably mounted at and between opposite sidewalls of said roller conveyor, and a drive system comprising a directly driven roller, each of said directly driven rollers having a roller portion, 5 a mounting portion and a motor operable to directly drive said roller portion relative to said mounting portion, said mounting portion being mountable to said sidewalls, each of said directly driven rollers being operable to drive said idler rollers via a drive member, said drive member being positioned substantially beneath said idler rollers and in generally continuous contact with a lower portion of at least some of said idler rollers and at least a portion of said roller portion of said directly driven roller, said directly driven rollers being selectively operable to provide accumulation of at least two articles in each of said zones.
- 34. The roller conveyor of claim 33 including at least one control operable to selectively activate and deactivate said motors of said directly driven rollers.
- 35. The roller conveyor of claim 34, wherein each zone includes an article sensor operable to sense articles being conveyed along that zone, said at least one control being operable to selectively activate and deactivate said motors of said directly driven rollers in response to said article sensors.
- 36. The roller conveyor of claim 35, wherein said at least one control and said drive systems are operable in response to said article sensors to accumulate at least two articles in said zones.
- 37. The roller conveyor of claim 34 including a current sensor operable to sense the current draw of said motor of each of said directly driven rollers, said at least one control being operable to selectively activate and deactivate said motors of said directly driven rollers in response to said current sensor.
- 38. The roller conveyor of claim 33, wherein said drive member is configured to slip relative to said lower portion of said at least some of said idler rollers to allow for rotation of said idler rollers when said directly driven roller of the respective zone is deactivated.
- 39. The roller conveyor of claim 33, wherein said drive member comprises a tape strip reeved around a plurality of snubbers positioned beneath at least some of said idler rollers of each of said zones.
- 40. The roller conveyor of claim 39, wherein said tape strip of each zone is reeved around said roller portion of said directly driven roller, said directly driven roller being positioned beneath said idler rollers.
- 41. The roller conveyor of claim 40, wherein said tape strip is urged into generally continuous contact with said lower portion of at least some of said idler rollers by at least some of said directly driven roller and said snubbers.
- 42. The roller conveyor of claim 33, wherein said directly driven roller comprises a motorized roller, said motor being at least partially within said roller portion of said directly driven roller.
- 43. The roller conveyor of claim 33, wherein said motor of said directly driven roller is mounted at said sidewall of said conveyor and operable to directly drive said roller portion relative to said mounting portion.
- 44. The roller conveyor of claim 43, wherein said motor is mounted at least partially within said sidewall and at an angle with respect to an axis of rotation of said roller portion, said directly driven roller including a gear box operable to drive said roller portion in response to said motor.
- 45. The roller conveyor of claim 33, wherein said directly driven roller of each of said at least two tandem zones is operable independently from other driven rollers of other tandem zones.
