Claims
- 1. A method of manipulating a tape in a bookbinding apparatus of the type which utilizes a binding tape which includes a flexible tape substrate which carries an adhesive, with the tape being bonded to first and second cover sheets of a stack to be bound and with the tape having one of a plurality of predetermined widths to accommodate stacks of varying thickness, said method comprising the following steps:
- automatically measuring the thickness of the stack to be bound;
- automatically adjusting the spacing between first and second tape guide surfaces based upon the measured thickness of the stack so as to accommodate one of the tapes having a particular one of the predetermined widths; and
- supporting a first edge of the tape having the particular predetermined width utilizing the first tape guide surface which engages the first edge of the tape and a second edge of the tape, opposite the first edge, utilizing the second tape guide surface.
- 2. The method of claim 1 further including, subsequent to said supporting step, the step of positioning the tape adjacent the stack to be bound utilizing the first tape guide surface at a location relative to the stack dependent upon the thickness of the stack as determined in said automatic measuring step.
- 3. The method of claim 2 wherein the step of supporting includes the step of first drawing the tape between the tape guide surfaces at a first rate of speed and then drawing the tape at a second rate of speed greater than said first rate of speed.
- 4. The method of claim 3 wherein the step of supporting includes the step of manually inserting the tape between the tape guide surfaces followed by the steps of drawing the tape and further includes the step of momentarily preventing manual insertion of a further tape once the feeding step is completed.
- 5. Apparatus for binding a plurality of sheets arranged in a stack utilizing a binding tape which includes a flexible substrate which carries an adhesive, with the tape being bonded to first and second cover sheets of the stack and engaging an edge of the stack so as to form a spine, said apparatus comprising:
- stack support means for supporting the stack of sheets;
- tape positioner means for positioning the tape with respect to the stack, with the positioner means being movable between a tape load position where tape is loaded into the positioner means and a tape seal position where the tape is applied to the stack;
- platen means to be applied to the tape and the stack of sheets so as to form the spine and the first and second cover seals; and
- a single drive motor for moving the tape positioner means between the tape load position and the tape seal position and for applying the platen to the tape.
- 6. The apparatus of claim 5 wherein the platen means includes a first platen for forming the spine and a second platen for forming the first and second seals, with the first platen being rotatable between a first and second positions during the formation of the spine and cover seals and wherein the single drive motor also functions to rotate the first platen.
- 7. The apparatus of claim 6 wherein the platen means is moveable between a first position where the platen means is forcing the tape against the edge of the stack so as to form the spine and a second position where the tape is being folded around the edge of the stack by the platen means and wherein the single drive motor also functions to move the platen means between the first and second positions.
- 8. The apparatus of claim 7 wherein the single drive motor drives a single rotatable element which functions to control the position of the tape positioner means, rotation of the first platen and movement of the platen means between the first and second positions.
- 9. A method of manipulating a tape in a book binding apparatus of the type which utilizes a binding tape which includes a flexible substrate which carries an adhesive, with the tape being bonded to first and second cover sheets of a stack to be bound, said method comprising the following steps:
- measuring the thickness of the stack to be bound;
- supporting a first edge of the tape utilizing a first tape guide surface which engages the first edge of the tape and a second edge of the tape, opposite the first edge, utilizing a second tape guide surface;
- positioning the tape, subsequent to said supporting step, adjacent the stack and at a location relative to the stack based upon the thickness of the stack as determined in said measuring step utilizing said first tape guide surface; and
- forming a seal, subsequent to said step of positioning, between the first cover of the stack and the tape at the second edge thereof.
- 10. A tape handling mechanism for use in a book binding apparatus of the type which utilizes a binding tape which includes a flexible tape substrate which carries an adhesive, with the tape being bonded to first and second cover sheets of a stack to be bound and with the tape having one of a plurality of predetermined widths to accommodate stacks of varying thickness, said tape handling mechanism comprising:
- first tape support means for supporting a first edge of the tape, said first tape means having a tape guide surface which engages the first tape edge;
- second tape support means for supporting a second edge of the tape, opposite the first edge, said second tape means having a tape guide surface which engages the second tape edge, with the tape guide surfaces being spaced apart an adjustable distance in accordance with one of the predetermined widths of the tape;
- measuring means for automatically measuring the thickness of the stack to be bound when the tape handling mechanism is in a tape load mode; and
- control means for automatically adjusting the distance between the tape guide surfaces in response to said measuring means when said handling mechanism is in the tape load mode;
- whereby the first and second tape support means can support a tape having one of the predetermined widths based upon the thickness of the stack to be bound.
- 11. The tape handling mechanism of claim 10 wherein the first tape support means is moveable between a tape load position when the mechanism is in the tape load mode and a binding position when the mechanism is in a binding mode, and when the mechanism is in the binding mode the control means further functions to position the first tape support means relative to the stack at a location dependent upon the thickness of the stack as determined by the measuring means to permit the tape to be applied to the stack at the second edge of the tape.
- 12. The mechanism of claim 11 wherein the second tape support means is moveable between a tape load position when the mechanism is in the tape load mode and a tape binding position, displaced from the tape load position, when the mechansim is in the tape bind mode, so that second tape support means is positioned such that the first tape support means is free to move between the tape load position and the binding position.
- 13. The mechanism of claim 12 wherein the first tape support means includes mounting means for causing the tape guide surface to move in an arc between the tape load and binding positions.
- 14. The mechanism of claim 13 wherein the mounting means includes a rotatable shaft and a support arm connecting the tape guide surface to the shaft.
- 15. The mechanism of claim 14 further including tape drive means for sensing when the mechanism is in the tape load mode and for drawing a tape into the tape handling mechanism at the beginning of a binding operation.
- 16. The mechanism of claim 15 wherein the tape is manually inserted into the mechanism and wherein the drive means initially draws the tape into the mechanism at a first rate of speed and next draws the tape at a second rate of speed greater than the first rate.
- 17. The mechanism of claim 15 wherein the tape drive means includes first and second drive elements which engage the tape on opposite sides thereof when the mechanism is in the tape load mode and with the first drive element being supported on the second tape support means.
- 18. The mechanism of claim 17 wherein the first and second drive elements are first and second rollers, respectively, and the first roller is an idle roller and the second roller is a driven roller.
- 19. The mechansim of claim 18 wherein the tape is manually inserted into the mechanism and the mechanism includes blocking means for preventing insertion of the tape when the mechanism is in the binding mode.
- 20. The mechanism of claim 19 wherein the blocking means including a tab member mounted on the second tape support means which obstructs a tape feed path along which the tape is inserted into the mechanism when the second tape support means is in the binding position and moves away from the path when the second tape support means is in the tape load position.
- 21. A tape handling mechanism for use in a book binding apparatus of the type which utilizes a binding tape which includes a flexible tape substrate which carries an adhesive, with the tape being bonded to first and second cover sheets of a stack to be bound, said tape handling mechanism comprising:
- first tape support means for supporting a first edge of the tape, said first tape means having a tape guide surface which engages the first tape edge, with the first tape support means being movable between a tape load position when the mechanism is in a tape load mode and the binding position when the mechanism is in a binding mode;
- second tape support means for supporting a second edge of the tape, opposite the first edge, when the mechanism is in the tape feed mode, said second tape means having a tape guide surface which engages the second tape edge, with the tape guide surfaces of the first and second tape support means being spaced apart a distance in accordance with a width of the tape when the mechanism is in the tape feed mode;
- measuring means for measuring the thickness of the stack to be bound when the tape handling mechanism is in a tape load mode; and
- control means for positioning the first tape support means in the tape binding position relative to the stack at a location dependent upon the thickness of the stack as determined by the measuring means to permit the tape to be initially applied to the stack at the second edge of the tape;
- whereby the tape will be applied to the stack at a location dependent upon the thickness of the stack so that the tape can be bonded to the first and second covers over an equal area.
- 22. The mechanism of claim 21 wherein the second tape support means is moveable between a tape load position when the mechanism is in the tape load mode and a tape binding position, displaced from the tape load position, when the mechanism is in the tape load position, so that second tape support means is positioned such that the first tape support means is free to move between the tape load position and the binding position.
- 23. The mechanism of claim 22 further including tape drive means for sensing when the mechanism is in the tape load mode and for drawing a tape into the tape handling mechanism at the beginning of a binding operation.
- 24. The mechanism of claim 23 wherein the tape have a plurality of predetermined widths to accommodate stacks of varying thickness and wherein the distance between the tape guide surfaces is adjustable in accordance with the predetermined tape widths and wherein the control means is also means for adjusting the distance between the tape guide surfaces in response to said measuring means when said handling mechanism is in the tape load mode so that the first and second tape support means can support a tape having one of the predetermined widths base upon the thickness of the stack to be bound.
- 25. The mechanism of claim 23 wherein the tape drive means includes first and second drive elements which engage the tape on opposite sides thereof when the mechanism is in the tape load mode and with the first drive element being supported on the second tape support means.
- 26. The mechanism of claim 25 wherein the first and second drive elements are first and second rollers, respectively, and the first roller is an idle roller and the second roller is a driven roller.
- 27. The mechanism of claim 26 wherein the tape is manually inserted into the mechanism and the mechanism includes blocking means for preventing insertion of the tape when the mechanism is in the binding mode.
- 28. The mechanism of claim 27 wherein the blocking means includes a tab member mounted on the second tape support means which obstructs a tape feed path along which the tape is inserted into the mechanism when the second tape guide is in the tape binding position and moves away from the path when the second position guide is in the tape load position.
