Abstract
A target hanging system that includes a support rod, hanging brackets and a target plate. The hanging brackets are formed in a manner that allows the target plate to hang at a non-perpendicular angle relative to the ground. This angled target plate acts as a safety measure directing any bullet fragmentation directly into the ground.
Description
BACKGROUND
1. Field of the Invention

The present invention relates generally to targets for firearm sport shooting and training and, more particularly to a reusable apparatus for holding a target for firearm sport shooting.

2. Description of the Related Art

A multitude of different target shooting systems are known in the art. The details of these target shooting systems depend largely on the specific requirements or training practices of a shooter.

Targets used in the target shooting systems can range from paper targets to metal targets. These targets are generally arranged at a distant end of a shooting range. Each of the targets can generally be moved around and positioned within the range depending on, for example, a particular training drill or practice need for a shooter.

Commercially available target shooting products typically include a target and a means of holding or supporting the target. The means of holding these targets may vary, but they often include some structural mechanism to both support the target. However, safety is always of paramount concern regarding any firearm or tool for use with the same. Thus, what is needed in the art is a safer target hanging system.

Hence, specific dimensions and other physical characteristics relating to the embodiments disclosed herein are not to be considered as limiting, unless the claims expressly state otherwise.

FIG. 1 shows a front view of device 2000 in accordance with the present invention. As illustrated in FIG. 1, device 2000 comprises first hanging bracket 100 and second hanging bracket 200. Hanging brackets 100 and 200 are of identical shape. Hanging brackets 100 and 200 are preferably constructed of metal, such as steel, iron, or aluminum. However, any durable material used in the business of shooting targets is suitable. In the preferred embodiment, the hanging brackets 100 and 200 are formed of hardened steel, essentially armor plating, providing relative hardiness, durability, and longevity compared to traditional prior art type target hangers.

Referring still to FIG. 1, system 1000 further comprises backing plate 300. Backing plate 300 also comprises a durable material, such as steel, iron, or aluminum, suitable for backing a replaceable paper target.

Referring now to FIGS. 2, 3 and 7, brackets 100 and 200 comprise a vertical base 110, 210 having opposed first and second ends. The first end of base 110, 210 has a first extension member 120, 220 connected to and extending there from at an obtuse angle relative to base 110, 210. First extension member 120, 220 comprises a curved end 130, 230 opposite base 110, 210. Curved end 130, 230 of first extension member 120, 220 further comprises hanging post 150, 250 disposed in parallel to base 110, 210 such that a hanging slot 140, 240 is disposed within the interior of bracket 100, 200.

Referring again to FIGS. 2 and 3, brackets 100 and 200 further comprise respective curved second ends 170, 270. Each curved end 170, 270 terminates with an elongated connecting post 160, 260. Each connecting post 160, 260 is disposed generally opposite hanging post 150, 250 and in parallel to base 110, 210. Each curved end 170, 270 further comprises a second extension member 180, 280 tangentially connected to curved end 170, 270 and disposed at an obtuse angle relative to base 110, 210 of bracket 100, 200.

Returning to FIG. 1 and further referring to FIGS. 4, 5, and 6, system 1000 of the present invention further comprises support rod 400 preferably disposed above an even surface such as the flooring of an indoor shooting range. Device 2000 is removably hung onto support rod 400 via brackets 100 and 200. As illustrated in FIGS. 1 and 4-6, rod 400 is disposed through slots 140 and 240. System 1000 and device 2000 further comprise backing plate 300 having post receiving holes 310. Plate 300 comprises a generally flat shape preferably having a regular geometric surface shape such as a circle, square, or rectangle. Holes 310 are disposed such that plate 300 can be held by brackets 100 and 200. In a preferred embodiment, the present brackets 100 and 200 include a unique design shape that enables the brackets 100 and 200 to be hung from either an angular cross bar (i.e. a common 2×4) or a round crossbar (i.e. rebar, electrical conduit, pipe, etc.).

As illustrated in FIGS. 4-6, receiving holes 310 of plate 300 are sized and shaped to receive hanging posts 160 and 260 of brackets 100 and 200, respectively. Referring specifically to FIGS. 4 and 5, plate 300 is removably connected to brackets 100 and 200 such that plate 300 is disposed at an angle, within a range of about 10 degrees to about 45 degrees and preferably about 15 degrees to about 30 degrees relative to a base 110, 210 which is preferably disposed perpendicularly to a floor or ground. Importantly, the angle at which plate 300 is disposed prevents projectiles fired at device 2000 from ricocheting directly back at a user of device 2000.

In a preferred embodiment, the brackets 100 and 200 allow the targets to be hung at an angle of slightly greater than 20 degrees (approximately 22 degrees) to the ground. The present invention thus differs from the prior art in enabling a target plate 300 to be hung off of a horizontal cross bar supporting rod 400 and achieve this angled disposition. This angled disposition allows for enhanced safety as bullet fragmentation will be directed downward instead of back at the shooter. Additionally, the leading edge of our targets hanger brackets 100 and 200 are beveled at a 20-degree angle so that there are no flat surfaces facing toward the shooter, thus making the chances of a ricochet directly back at the shooter highly unlikely and therefore enhancing safety.

With reference to FIG. 8, an alternative embodiment of the present invention is shown. In the exemplary embodiment illustrated in FIG. 8, dual hanging system 3000 of the present invention comprises supporting rod 400, hanger 500, support beam 600, opposed hanging brackets 700 and 800, and target plate 300.

Hanger 500 of system 3000 comprises means 510 for removably placing system 3000 on support rod 400. In a preferred embodiment, means 510 and support rod 400 comprises the same configuration as discussed herein regarding system 1000.

Referring again to FIG. 8, hanger 500 further comprises member 520 which extends from hanger 500 and connects hanger 500 to cross beam 600. Cross beam 600 is generally disposed in parallel to rod 400. Opposed hanging brackets 700 and 800 are connected to opposed ends of cross beam 600 and extend downwardly from cross beam 600.

Referring still to FIG. 8, brackets 700 and 800 further comprise respective curved ends as described herein regarding brackets 100 and 200 such that brackets 700 and 800 are removably connected to target plate 300. Additionally, the leading edge of brackets 700 and 800, cross beam 600 and hanger 500 are beveled to the same degree as described herein regarding brackets 100 and 200.

While this invention has been described with respect to at least one embodiment, the present invention can be further modified within the spirit and scope of this disclosure. This application is therefore intended to cover any variations, uses, or adaptations of the invention using its general principles. Further, this application is intended to cover such departures from the present disclosure as come within known or customary practice in the art to which this invention pertains and which fall within the limits of the appended claims.
