Claims
- 1. A process for making a tarnish resistant copper alloy having a film resistance of at least 95 kilohms, said process comprising the steps of:
- A. forming a hot liquid solution of metals consisting essentially of the following constituents in the following amounts in percent by weight:
- Al 7-8.5
- Ni 1.5-2.5
- Cu 89-91.5
- B. cooling the metal solution to form a solid; and
- C. subjecting the solid to a heat treatment to produce a metallic structure comprising an alpha phase matrix made of aluminum in solid solution with copper and containing dispersed NiAl, said structure containing less than 2 volume percent beta and gamma phases.
- 2. The process as set forth in claim 1 wherein step C is effected by:
- 1. hot rolling, thereafter
- 2. cold rolling, and thereafter
- 3. annealing.
- 3. The process as set forth in claim 2 comprising the further steps of repeating steps 2 and 3.
- 4. The process as set forth in claim 2 wherein step 1 is done at 900.degree.-600.degree. C., step 2 reduces the thickness of the solid metal by about 50%, and step 3 is done at about 700.degree. C.
- 5. The process as set forth in claim 1 wherein, in step A, a solution having the following compositions in percent by weight is formed:
- Al 7.7-8.3
- Ni 1.8-2.2
- Cu Balance.
- 6. The process as set forth in claim 1 wherein the solution also includes conventional impurities typically found in commercial based alloys.
- 7. The process as set forth in claim 1 wherein the solution includes impurities selected from the group consisting of lead, tin, phosphorus, iron, manganese, zinc, silicon, and mixtures thereof in a total amount no greater than 0.5 weight percent.
- 8. A process as set forth in claim 1 wherein the resulting alloy is characterized by a film resistance of at least 100 kilohms.
- 9. The process as set forth in claim 1 wherein the resulting copper alloy has the following minimum properties:
- yield strength 46,000 psi
- tensile strength 85,000 psi
- elongation 38.5%
- limiting draw ratio 2.12
- Olsen Bulge Height 0.413 inches
