Claims
- 1. A method for identifying a candidate payee to be paid by an electronic commerce service provider on behalf of a consumer, comprising:
receiving, at an electronic commerce service provider, information identifying a location of a first consumer; accessing information, based upon the received location information, associated with the service provider providing a payment service to a second consumer located proximate to the first consumer; and identifying at least one candidate payee of the first consumer based upon the accessed information.
- 2. The method of claim 1, wherein the accessed information includes at least one of (i) information identifying at least one payee paid by the service provider on behalf of the second consumer, and (ii) information identifying at least one payee designated by the second consumer as an intended payee.
- 3. The method of claim 1, wherein:
the second consumer is one of a plurality of consumers, each having a location proximate to the location of the first consumer; and the accessed information is associated with the service provider providing the payment service to each of the plurality of consumers.
- 4. The method of claim 3, wherein the accessed information includes at least one of (i) information identifying at least one payee paid by the service provider on behalf of one or more of the plurality of consumers, and (ii) information identifying at least one payee designated by one or more of the plurality of consumers as an intended payee, and further comprising:
determining, for any payee identified in the accessed information, a number of the plurality of consumers that have at least one of (i) directed the service provider to pay the payee, and (ii) designated the payee as an intended payee; wherein only those payees having been at least one of (i) paid by the service provider on behalf of a number of the plurality of consumers greater than a predetermined number of consumers, and (ii) designated as an intended payee by a number of the plurality of consumers greater than a predetermined number of consumers are identified as a candidate payee of the first consumer.
- 5. The method of claim 1, wherein:
the information identifying the location of the first consumer is a zip code in which the first consumer is located; and the second consumer is located in the zip code in which the first consumer is located.
- 6. The method of claim 1, further comprising:
transmitting, via the network, candidate payee information identifying the at least one candidate payee, from the service provider to the first consumer; and receiving via the network, at the service provider and responsive to the transmitted candidate payee information, a first consumer selection of at least one candidate payee as a definite payee of the first consumer.
- 7. The method of claim 6, wherein:
a payee set-up presentation is transmitted with the candidate payee information; and the transmitted payee set-up presentation is at least partially completed by the service provider based upon information received from an entity other than the first consumer.
- 8. The method of claim 6, further comprising:
determining, at the service provider, that a first candidate payee is a payee that receives recurring payments; wherein an offer to set-up recurring payments to the first candidate payee on behalf of the first consumer is transmitted either with the candidate payee information or subsequent to receipt of the first consumer selection of the first candidate payee as a definite payee.
- 9. The method of claim 6, wherein the transmitted candidate payee information identifies a business type of at least one candidate payee.
- 10. The method of claim 1, further comprising:
receiving, at the service provider, information identifying a type of business the first consumer pays, the business type information excluding information naming any business; determining if the at least one candidate payee is a business of the business type identified; and transmitting, from the service provider and to the first consumer, candidate payee information; wherein the transmitted candidate payee information only identifies those candidate payees determined to have the identified business type.
- 11. The method of claim 1, wherein:
the first consumer location information is received during an enrollment session for services of the service provider; and the at least one candidate payee is identified by the service provider without a first consumer request to identify payees of the first consumer.
- 12. A system for identifying a candidate payee to be paid by an electronic commerce service provider on behalf of a consumer, comprising:
a communications interface configured to received, via a network, information identifying a location of a first consumer; a memory configured to store information associated with providing a payment service to at least one other consumer located proximate to the first consumer; and a processor configured to access the stored information based upon the received location information and to identify at least one candidate payee of the first consumer based upon the accessed information.
- 13. The system of claim 12, wherein:
the at least one other consumer is a plurality of consumers, each having a location proximate to the location of the first consumer; and the accessed information includes at least one of (i) information identifying at least one payee paid by the service provider on behalf of one or more of the plurality of consumers, and (ii) information identifying at least one payee designated by one or more of the plurality of consumers as an intended payee.
- 14. The system of claim 13, wherein:
the processor is further configured to determine, for any payee identified in the accessed information, a number of the plurality of consumers that have at least one of (i) directed the service provider to pay the payee, and (ii) designated the payee as an intended payee; wherein only those payees having been at least one of (i) paid by the service provider on behalf of a number of the plurality of consumers greater than a predetermined number of consumers, and (ii) designated as an intended payee by a number of the plurality of consumers greater than a predetermined number of consumers are identified as a candidate payee of the first consumer.
- 15. The system of claim 12, wherein:
the information identifying the location of the first consumer is a zip code in which the first consumer is located; and the second consumer is located in the zip code in which the first consumer is located.
- 16. The system of claim 12, wherein:
the communications interface is further configured to transmit, via the network and to the first consumer, candidate payee information identifying the at least one candidate payee, and to receive from the first consumer, via the network and responsive to the transmitted candidate payee information, a first consumer selection of at least one candidate payee as a definite payee of the first consumer; and the processor is further configured to cause the communications interface to transmit the candidate payee information.
- 17. The system of claim 16, wherein:
a payee set-up presentation is transmitted with the candidate payee information; the communications interface is further configured to receive, via the network and from an entity other than the first consumer, information associated with the at least one candidate payee; and the payee set-up presentation is a least partially completed by the service provider based upon the information received from the other entity.
- 18. The system of claim 16, wherein:
the communications interface is further configured to transmit, via the network and to the first consumer, an offer for the service provider to set-up recurring payments to a first candidate payee; and the processor is further configured to determine that the first candidate payee is a payee that receives recurring payments, and to cause the communications interface to transmit the offer.
- 19. The system of claim 16, wherein the transmitted candidate payee information identifies a business type of at least one candidate payee.
- 20. The system of claim 12, wherein:
information identifying a type of business the first consumer pays is received, the business type information excluding information naming any business; the communications interface is further configured to transmit, via the network and to the first consumer, candidate payee information identifying the at least one candidate payee; the processor is further configured to determine if the at least one candidate payee is a business of the business type identified, and to cause the communications interface to transmit the candidate payee information; and the transmitted candidate payee information only identifies those candidate payees determined to have the identified business type.
