Claims
- 1. A method for debiting a funding account associated with a payor by a payment service provider in making a payment on behalf of the payor who is not a customer of the payment service provider, comprising:
receiving, by a payment service provider and from a payee, a payment request to pay a payee on behalf of a payor, the payment request including a payor authorization to debit a payor funding account and excluding information identifying the payor funding account, the payor funding account being unknown to the payment service provider and the payee; obtaining information associated with the payor funding account from at least one of a plurality of data repositories each associated with an entity other than the payment service provider based upon the authorization; and debiting the payor funding account by the payment service provider in making payment to the payee on behalf of the payor based upon the obtained information.
- 2. The method of claim 1, wherein:
the funding account is a payor deposit account; and the obtained information includes an account number of the payor deposit account and a routing number of a financial institution at which the payor deposit account is maintained.
- 3. The method of claim 1, wherein the debiting includes one of a) electronically debiting the payor funding account based upon the obtained information, and b) generating a draft drawn on the payor funding account, the draft including at least a portion of the obtained information.
- 4. The method of claim 1, wherein each of the plurality of data repositories is maintained by an entity other than a financial institution at which the payor funding account is maintained or associated, or the payor.
- 5. The method of claim 4, wherein the accessed at least one data repository is a Web services data repository.
- 6. The method of claim 1, wherein:
the request includes a payment amount and information identifying the payee; and the payment is completed by the payment service provider without requiring the payment service provider to communicate with the payor.
- 7. The method of claim 1, wherein:
the payor is one of a plurality of payors; the funding account information is obtained from a central data repository; and the central data repository stores information associated with a plurality of funding accounts, each associated with one of the plurality of payors.
- 8. The method of claim 1, wherein the received request is a first request, and further comprising:
storing, by the payment service provider, the obtained information associated with the payor funding account in association with information identifying the payor; receiving, by the payment service provider, a second request to complete a payment on behalf of the payor; retrieving the stored information associated with the payor, including the payor funding account information; and debiting the payor funding account in completing payment on behalf of the payor based at least in part upon the retrieved information.
- 9. The method of claim 1, wherein the payment request is received responsive to the payor activating a Hyper-link included in a bill of the payee electronically presented to the payor.
- 10. The method of claim 9, wherein the bill is electronically presented to the payor by one of the payee and the payment service provider.
- 11. A system for debiting a funding account associated with a payor by a payment service provider in making a payment on behalf of the payor who is not customer of the payment service provider, comprising:
a communications interface configured to receive a payment request, from a payee, for a payment service provider to pay the payee on behalf of a payor, the payment request including a payor authorization to debit a payor funding account and excluding information identifying the payor funding account, the payor funding account being unknown to the payment service provider and the payee; and a processor configured to obtain information associated with the payor funding account from at least one of a plurality of data repositories each associated with an entity other than the payment service provider based upon the authorization and to cause the payor funding account to be debited in making payment to the payee on behalf of the payor based upon the obtained information.
- 12. The system of claim 11, wherein:
the funding account is a payor deposit account; and the obtained information includes an account number of the payor deposit account and a routing number of a financial institution at which the payor deposit account is maintained.
- 13. The system of claim 11, wherein the debiting includes one of a) electronically debiting the payor funding account based upon the obtained information, and b) generating a draft drawn on the payor funding account, the draft including at least a portion of the obtained information.
- 14. The system of claim 11, wherein each of the plurality of data repositories is maintained by an entity other than a financial institution at which the payor funding account is maintained or associated, or the payor.
- 15. The method of claim 14, wherein the accessed at least one data repository is a Web services data repository.
- 16. The system of claim 11, wherein:
the request includes a payment amount and information identifying the payee; and the payment is completed without requiring the payment service provider to communicate with the payor.
- 17. The system of claim 11, wherein:
the payor is one of a plurality of payors; the funding account information is obtained from a central data repository; and the central data repository stores information associated with a plurality of funding accounts, each associated with one of the plurality of payors.
- 18. The system of claim 11, further comprising:
a payment service provider memory configured to store the obtained information associated with the payor funding account in association with information identifying the payor; wherein the communications interface is further configured to receive a second payment request to complete a payment on behalf of the payor; and the processor is further configured to retrieve the stored information associated with the payor from the memory, including the payor funding account information, and to cause the payor funding account to be debited in completing payment on behalf of the payor based at least in part upon the retrieved information.
- 19. The system of claim 11, wherein the payment request is received responsive to the payor activating a Hyper-link included in a bill of the payee electronically presented to the payor.
- 20. The system of claim 19, wherein the bill is electronically presented to the payor by one of the payee and the payment service provider.
