Claims
- 1. A method of preparing a mailpiece, the method comprising:
applying a first code to the mailpiece, the first code uniquely identifying the mailpiece and being for use in tracking and accounting for postage, the first code being referred to as mailpiece identification (MI) code; and applying a second code to the mailpiece, the second code signifying at least part of an address and being for use in automated sorting of the mailpiece, the second code being referred to as a destination code.
- 2. The method of claim 1, and further comprising:
at a mail processing (MP) site,
scanning the mailpiece to obtain the MI code and the destination code, sending a mailpiece message that includes the MI code, the destination code, and a current location to a postage vendor (PV) site; and at the PV site,
storing information representative of the MI code, the destination code, and the current location, crediting an account of a postal service for postage, and designating the MI code as a retired code.
- 3. The method of claim 2, and further comprising, at the PV site in connection with crediting the account of the postal service, debiting an account of the mailer for postage.
- 4. The method of claim 2 wherein the MI code was initially generated at the PV site and sent to a mailer site, and further comprising, at the PV site prior to sending the MI to the mailer site, debiting an account of the mailer by at least a portion of a postage amount.
- 5. The method of claim 2 wherein:
the MI code was initially generated at the PV site and sent to a mailer site; and storing information representative of the MI code occurs before the MI code is applied to the mailpiece.
- 6. The method of claim 2 wherein:
the mailpiece is scanned at a plurality of mail processing (MP) sites, including at least a first MP site and a last MP site; and the MI code is designated as a retired MI code when the PV site receives a mailpiece message containing the MI code from the last MP site.
- 7. The method of claim 2, and further comprising, at the PV site making stored information regarding the current location available to queries specifying the MI code.
- 8. The method of claim 1 wherein the MI code is applied in human-readable form and machine-readable form.
- 9. A method of tracking and accounting for a mailpiece, the method comprising:
generating a unique mailpiece identification code under the authority of a postage vendor (PV); applying the MI code to a mailpiece prior to introducing the mailpiece into a mail stream; detecting the MI code at a postal service mail processing (MP) site; sending the MI code to a PV site; and at the PV site,
debiting an account of a mailer associated with the MI code, and crediting an account of the postal service.
- 10. A method of tracking and accounting for postage on a mailpiece, the method comprising:
applying a unique mailpiece identification (MI) code to the mailpiece; at a mail processing site,
extracting the MI code from the mailpiece, determining a destination for the mailpiece, and sending a mailpiece message that includes the MI code, a current location, and the destination to a postage vendor site; at the postage vendor (PV) site,
receiving the mailpiece message from the mail processing site, associating the MI code with a mailer, creating a database record that corresponds to the MI code, storing the current location, the destination, and a postage amount in the database record that corresponds to the MI code, crediting an account of a postal service for postage, and designating the MI code as a retired MI code.
- 11. The method of claim 10 wherein the postage amount is sent from the mail processing site as part of the mailpiece message.
- 12. The method of claim 10 wherein:
the MI code is generated at the PV site; and the database record that corresponds to the MI code is created prior to sending the MI code to an entity that applies the MI code to the mailpiece.
- 13. The method of claim 12 wherein the postage amount is generated at the PV site in connection with generating the MI code.
- 14. The method of claim 10, and further comprising, at the PV site in connection with crediting the account of the postal service, debiting an account of the mailer for postage.
- 15. A method, performed at a postage vendor (PV) site, of tracking and accounting for postage on mailpieces, the method comprising:
generating a set of unique mailpiece identification (MI) codes; sending at least some MI codes to remote mailer sites; receiving a mailpiece message from a mail processing site, the message corresponding to a mailpiece and including an MI code, a current location, a destination, and a postage amount; determining whether the MI code is a valid MI code; creating a database record corresponding to the MI code; debiting an account of a mailer for postage; crediting an account of a postal service for postage; determining whether the mailpiece has arrived at the destination, and if so, designating the MI code as a retired MI code.
- 16. The method of claim 15 wherein creating the database record corresponding to a particular MI code occurs before the particular MI code is communicated to any remote mailer site.
- 17. The method of claim 15 wherein:
at least some MI codes, referred to as mailer-site codes, are generated at sites remote from the PV site; and creating the database record corresponding to a particular mailer-site code occurs after the particular mailer-site code is communicated from the PV site to any remote mailer site.
- 18. A method of tracking and accounting for postage on mailpieces, each mailpiece having a destination and passing through at least one mail processing site of a plurality of mail processing sites before arriving at the destination, the method comprising:
(a) applying unique mailpiece identification (MI) codes to the mailpieces; (b) at a first mail processing site through which each mailpiece passes,
extracting the MI code from the mailpiece, determining the destination for the mailpiece, and sending a mailpiece message that includes the MI code, and a current location, and the destination to a postage vendor (PV) site; and (c) at any subsequent mail processing sites through which each mailpiece passes,
extracting the MI code from the mailpiece, determining the destination for the mailpiece, and sending a mailpiece message that includes the MI code and a current location to the postage vendor (PV) site; and (d) at the postage vendor (PV) site,
receiving mailpiece messages from the mail processing sites, for each MI code received as part of a mailpiece message, storing the MI code, the current location, the destination, a postage amount, and a mailer account associated with the MI code, for each mailpiece message that includes a given MI code,
determining whether the mailpiece is the first communication for the MI code for the given mailpiece, and if so, debiting the mailer account for postage, and crediting an account of a postal service for postage, and determining whether the current location corresponds to the given mailpiece's destination, and if so,
designating the MI code as no longer valid.
- 19. The method of claim 18 wherein:
a first subset of MI codes are generated at the PV site; and a second subset of MI codes, referred to as mailer-site codes, are generated at sites remote from the PV site.
- 20. The method of claim 18 wherein the destination and the postage amount are sent to the PVS by subsequent mail processing sites through which each mailpiece passes.
- 21. The method of claim 18 wherein:
the first mail processing site through which the mailpiece passes rates the mailpiece; the mailpiece message from the first mail processing site through which the mailpiece passes includes the postage as a result of the rating of the mailpiece.
