Claims
- 1. A terminal adapter including:a silence detection mechanism for determining a level of speech activity for a cell; a marking mechanism for marking the cell, wherein said marking corresponding to the level of speech activity for the cell; and said marking mechanism marks at least three levels of speech.
- 2. The terminal adapter of claim 1, wherein the marking mechanism marks at least two levels of speech.
- 3. The terminal adapter of claim 1, wherein the at least three levels of speech include silence, partial voice spurts and speech.
- 4. The terminal adapter of claim 1, wherein the silence detection mechanism conditionally discards marked cells.
- 5. The terminal adapter of claim 4, wherein the terminal adapter is connected to a network, and when the network is congested, the silence detection mechanism is operable to discard marked cells.
- 6. The terminal adapter of claim 4, wherein the terminal adapter further includes an output buffer, and when an impending overflow of the output buffer is detected, the silence detection mechanism is operable to discard marked cells.
- 7. The terminal adapter of claim 1, wherein each cell containing a period of silence is marked using at least one bit in each cell.
- 8. A terminal adapter connected between a synchronous network switch and an asynchronous network switch and operable to convert signals received from the synchronous network switch to a format compatible with the asynchronous network switch, the terminal adapter comprising:a silence detection mechanism for detecting a level of speech of the signals received from the synchronous network switch; and a marking module operable to mark the converted signals containing a period of silence to distinguish them from converted signals containing periods of voice activity, wherein the marking module marks at least three levels of speech.
- 9. The terminal adapter of claim 8, wherein the marking module marks at least two levels of speech.
- 10. The terminal adapter of claim 8, wherein the at least three levels of speech include silence, partial voice spurts and speech.
- 11. The terminal adapter of claim 8, further comprising:a silence detection module operable to conditionally drop marked signals.
- 12. The terminal adapter of claim 11, wherein when a network connected to the asynchronous network switch is congested, the silence detection module is operable to discard marked signals containing periods of silence.
- 13. The terminal adapter of claim 12, wherein the terminal adapter further includes an output buffer, and when an impending overflow of the output buffer is detected, the silence detection module is operable to discard marked signals.
- 14. The terminal adapter of claim 8, wherein the signals received from the synchronous network switch are converted to cells, and each cell containing a period of silence is marked using at least one bit in each cell.
