Claims
- 1. A shape memory material activated device for opening a shell containing a substance, the device comprising:
a shell containing a substance; and a shape memory material activator configured to create a path through the shell in response to exposure of the shape memory material to a temperature above a predetermined temperature, wherein the path through the shell provides variable release of the substance, wherein the device provides an indication of a time that the shape memory material activator has been above the predetermined temperature.
- 2. A temperature sensor comprising:
a shell containing a substance capable of providing a visible indication upon release of a substance from the shell; and a shape memory material activator, wherein the shape memory material creates a path through the shell to release the substance when the shape memory material activator attains a predetermined temperature.
- 3. The sensor of Claim 2, wherein the shape memory material activator acts directly on the shell to create the path through the shell.
- 4. The sensor of Claim 2, wherein the shape memory material activator releases a mechanical element which acts on the shell to create the path through the shell.
- 5. The sensor of Claim 2, wherein the release of the substance causes a color change.
- 6. The sensor of Claim 5, wherein the color change is produced by mixing of the substance with another substance.
- 7. The sensor of Claim 5, wherein the path through the shell remains open with temperature cycling of the shape memory activator.
- 8. The sensor of Claim 5, wherein the path through the shell opens and closes with temperature cycling of the shape memory activator.
- 9. The sensor of Claim 8, wherein the shape memory material activator has been trained in Two Way Shape Memory Effect.
- 10. The sensor of Claim 8, wherein the shape memory material activator is coupled with a bias spring.
- 11. The sensor of Claim 5, wherein the color change is produced by a chemical reaction.
- 12. The sensor of Claim 2, wherein the shape memory material activator is an element within the shell.
- 13. The sensor of Claim 2, wherein the shape memory material activator is an element outside of the shell.
- 14. The sensor of Claim 2, wherein the shape memory material activator forms a part of the shell.
- 15. The sensor of Claim 2, wherein the shape memory material activator is a restraining clip on a non-shape memory material member.
- 16. The sensor of Claim 2, wherein the device provides an indication of a time that the shape memory material activator has been above the predetermined temperature.
- 17. A device for releasing a substance to a reservoir, the device comprising:
a shell containing a first substance, and a reservoir containing a second substance, and a shape memory material activator configured to create a path through the shell when the shape memory material activator attains a predetermined temperature, to release the first substance.
- 18. The device of Claim 17, wherein the reservoir is part of a transdermal system.
- 19. The device of Claim 17, wherein the reservoir is part of an implant system.
- 20. The device of Claim 17, wherein the reservoir is part of a temperature warning system.
- 21. The device of Claim 20, wherein the release of the first substance into the reservoir produces a visual indication.
- 22. The device of Claim 17, wherein the release of the first substance is repeatable with temperature cycling of the shape memory material activator.
- 23. The device of Claim 17, wherein the first and second substances are mixed in the reservoir.
- 24. A device for opening a shell containing a substance on demand, the device comprising:
a shell containing a substance; and a shape memory material actuator, wherein the shape memory material actuator is configured to create a path through the shell once demanded by a sensor responding to a stimulus, the sensor triggering the heating of the shape memory material actuator to a temperature above a predetermined temperature.
- 25. The device of Claim 24, wherein the shape memory material is heated by electrical means.
- 26. The device of Claim 24, wherein the device is capable of single or multiple releases of a substance through the path in the shell.
- 27. The device of Claim 24, wherein the device is a drug delivery system.
- 28. The device of Claim 27, wherein the device is a transdermal patch.
- 29. The device of Claim 27, wherein the device is an implant.
- 30. The device of Claim 24, wherein the device is a temperature warning system.
- 31. The device of Claim 24, wherein the triggering of the heating of the shape memory material heating is automatic.
- 32. The device of Claim 24, wherein the triggering of the heating of the shape memory material heating is manual.
- 33. A shape memory material activated device for opening and closing a shell containing a substance, the device comprising:
a multi-part shell containing a substance; and a shape memory material activator configured to create a path through the shell after the shape memory material activator attains a first predetermined temperature, and configured to close the path after the shape memory material activator attains a second predetermined temperature wherein the opening of the path through the shell provides a controlled access to the substance.
- 34. The device of Claim 33, wherein the shape memory material activator exhibits a two way shape memory effect.
- 35. The device of Claim 33, wherein the shape memory material activator is coupled with a bias spring.
- 36. The device of Claim 33, wherein the substance is of variable composition.
- 37. The device of Claim 33, wherein the substance is of uniform composition.
- 38. The device of Claim 33, wherein the substance is pressurized.
- 39. The device of Claim 33, wherein the substance is released through a membrane.
- 40. The device of Claim 33, wherein the device opens and closes in response to a command initiated by a detector.
- 41. The device of Claim 40, wherein initiation of the command is due to a change of a variable monitored by the detector.
- 42. A device for opening a shell containing a substance, the device comprising:
a shape memory material activator; a shell containing a substance, and a restrained mechanical element, the mechanical element creating a path through the shell when unrestrained by the shape memory material activator, when the shape memory material activator attains a predetermined temperature.
- 43. The device of Claim 42, wherein the path is created by a stored elastic energy released by the mechanical element.
- 44. The device of Claim 42, wherein the device produces a sound signal upon path creation.
- 45. The device of Claim 42, wherein the device is an implant.
- 46. The device of Claim 42, wherein the device is a transdermal patch.
- 47. The device of Claim 42, wherein the device is a temperature warning system.
- 48. A device for opening a shell containing a substance, the device comprising:
a shell containing a substance; and a shape memory material activator configured to fracture the shell to create a path through the shell upon attainment of a predetermined temperature.
- 49. The device of Claim 48, wherein the path prior to release of the substance is predetermined.
- 50. The device of Claim 48, wherein the path after the release of the substance is irreversible.
- 51. The device of Claim 48, wherein the shape memory material activator acts directly on the shell to create the path.
- 52. The device of Claim 48, wherein the shape memory material activator acts indirectly on the shell to create the path.
- 53. A device for opening a shell containing a substance at a predetermined temperature range, the device comprising:
a shell containing a substance; and a shape memory material activator configured to create a path through the shell in response to a change in the temperature of the shape memory material activator by subjecting the shell to a volume change.
- 54. The device of Claim 53, wherein the shape memory material activator comprises part of a wall of the shell.
- 55. The device of Claim 53, wherein the shape memory material activator acts directly on the shell to create the path.
- 56. The device of Claim 53, wherein the shape memory material activator acts indirectly on the shell to create the path.
- 57. The device of Claim 53, wherein the shape memory material releases a non-shape memory material element.
- 58. A device for opening a shell containing a substance, the device comprising:
a shell containing a substance; and a shape memory material activator configured to create a plurality of paths through the shell when the shape memory material activator attains a predetermined temperature within a predefined temperature range.
- 59. The device of Claim 58, wherein the substance is a dye.
- 60. The device of Claim 58, wherein the substance is a drug.
- 61. The device of Claim 58, wherein the device is an implant.
- 62. The device of Claim 58, wherein the device is part of a transdermal patch system.
- 63. The device of Claim 58, wherein the shell is subjected to a volume change during a shape change process of the shape memory material activator.
- 64. A device for opening a shell containing a substance, the device comprising:
a shell containing a substance; wherein, part of the shell is formed from a shape memory material that when subjected to a temperature change within a predetermined temperature range, changes the shape of the shape memory material and creates a path through the shell.
- 65. The device of Claim 64, wherein the substance is a dye.
- 66. The device of Claim 64, wherein substance is a drug.
- 67. The device of Claim 64, wherein the shell is subjected to a volume change during a shape change process of the shape memory material activator.
- 68. A device for opening a shell containing a substance, the device comprising:
a shell containing a substance; and a shape memory material activator configured to create a path through the shell once the shape memory material activator attains a predetermined temperature by thermal means.
- 69. The device of Claim 68, wherein the thermal means comprises ambient heat.
- 70. The device of Claim 68, wherein the thermal means comprises externally applied heat.
- 71. The device of Claim 68, wherein the thermal means comprises extraction of heat from the device.
- 72. The device of Claim 68, wherein the shell contains a plurality of chambers.
- 73. The device of Claim 68, wherein the device is a transdermal drug delivery patch.
- 74. The device of Claim 68, wherein the device is a drug delivery implant.
- 75. The device of Claim 68, wherein the device is a temperature warning system.
- 76. A device for opening a shell containing a substance, the device comprising:
a shell containing a substance; and a shape memory material activator configured to create a path through the shell once the shape memory material activator attains a predetermined temperature by electrical means.
- 77. The device of Claim 76, wherein the electrical means comprises an electric energy source.
- 78. The device of Claim 77, wherein the electric energy source comprises a battery.
- 79. The device of Claim 76, wherein the shell contains a plurality of chambers
- 80. The device of Claim 76, wherein the device is a transdermal drug delivery patch.
- 81. The device of Claim 76, wherein the device is a drug delivery implant.
- 82. The device of Claim 76, wherein the device is a temperature warning system.
- 83. A device for releasing a substance utilizing mechanical energy means, the device comprising:
a shell containing a substance wherein the shell opens to release the substance, and mechanical energy means configured to open the shell by creating a path through the shell and the mechanical energy is activated by a shape memory material element upon attainment of a predetermined temperature.
- 84. The device of Claim 83, wherein the mechanical means comprises a mechanical energy source.
- 85. The device of Claim 84, wherein the mechanical energy source is configured to release a stored elastic energy.
- 86. The device of Claim 83, wherein the shape memory material element attains the predetermined temperature by ambient heating.
- 87. The device of Claim 83, wherein the shape memory material element attains the predetermined temperature by externally applied heat.
- 88. The device of Claim 83, wherein the shape memory material element attains the predetermined temperature by an electric energy source.
- 89. The device of Claim 88, wherein application of the electric energy source is triggered by a detector.
- 90. The device of Claim 89, wherein the detector is triggered in response to an external input.
- 91. The device of Claim 88, wherein application of the electric energy source is triggered manually.
- 92. The device of Claim 83, wherein the device is a transdermal drug delivery patch.
- 93. The device of Claim 83, wherein the device is a drug delivery implant.
- 94. The device of Claim 83, wherein the device is a temperature warning system.
- 95. A device for opening a shell containing a substance, the device comprising:
a shell containing a substance, and a shape memory material activator configured to create a path through the shell when the shape memory material activator attains a predetermined temperature in response to an energy input.
- 96. The device of Claim 95, wherein the energy input is ambient heat.
- 97. The device of Claim 95, wherein the energy input is applied heat.
- 98. The device of Claim 95, wherein the energy input is resistive heat.
- 99. The device of Claim 98, wherein the resistive heat is supplied by a battery.
- 100. The device of Claim 95, wherein thermal energy is extracted from the shape memory material.
- 101. The device of Claim 95, wherein the path through the shell opens in response to the energy input and closes with the removal of the energy input.
- 102. The device of Claim 95, wherein the device is a transdermal drug delivery patch.
- 103. The device of Claim 95, wherein the device is a drug delivery implant.
- 104. The device of Claim 95, wherein the device is a temperature warning system.
- 105. A method for releasing a substance from a shell at a predetermined temperature range, comprising the following steps of:
heating a shape memory material to a temperature above a predetermined temperature, allowing the shape memory material to develop a self generating force, and utilizing the self generating force to create a path through a shell containing a substance, whereby the substance is released through the path through the shell.
- 106. The method of Claim 105, wherein the heating comprises heating the shape memory material manually.
- 107. The method of Claim 106, wherein the heating comprises externally applied heat.
- 108. The method of Claim 107, wherein the heat is applied by a heat source.
- 109. The method of Claim 105, wherein the heating comprises heating the shape memory material passively.
- 110. The method of Claim 109, wherein the passive heat is environmentally generated.
- 111. The method of Claim 105, wherein the heating comprises heating the shape memory material electrically.
- 112. The method of Claim 111, wherein the shape memory material is heated resistively.
- 113. The method of Claim 111, wherein the heating comprises heating the shape memory material electrically when a signal is received.
- 114. The method of Claim 113, wherein the signal is received by a detector.
