Claims
- 1. A method for controlling a variable displacement internal combustion engine having a plurality of cylinders, at least some of which are selectively deactivated in a variable displacement operating mode, the method comprising:monitoring temperature of at least one engine or vehicle component; controlling activation of at least one cylinder to control the temperature of the component, the method further comprises: activating at least one of the deactivated cylinders and controlling air/fuel ratio to the at least one cylinder during activation to provide a lean air/fuel ratio; controlling air/fuel ratio for a corresponding number of activated cylinders during activation of the at least one cylinder to provide a rich air/fuel ratio; and controlling air/fuel ration for all cylinders to provide a stoichiometric air/fuel ratio after reactivation of the at least one cylinder.
- 2. The method of claim 1 wherein the step of monitoring temperature comprises estimating the temperature.
- 3. The method of claim 1 further comprising activating deactivated cylinders to increase the temperature of the catalyst.
- 4. The method of claim 1 further comprising retarding ignition timing for the at least one cylinder during activation.
- 5. The method of claim 1 wherein the engine or vehicle component is an emission control device.
- 6. The method of claim 5 wherein the engine or vehicle component is a three-way catalyst.
- 7. A method for controlling a variable displacement internal combustion engine having cylinders grouped into two banks with associated separate upstream emission control devices and at least a third downstream emission control device, at least one bank being selectively activated and deactivated to provide variable displacement, the method comprising:determining temperature of at least one of the emission control devices; activating both cylinder banks when the temperature is below a low temperature threshold; and deactivating one of the cylinder banks when the temperature is above a high temperature threshold, wherein the third downstream emission control device is a shared emission control device positioned downstream of both upstream emission control devices and wherein the step of determining comprises determining the temperature of the third emission control device.
- 8. The method of claim 7 wherein the step of determining comprises estimating the temperature using a temperature model.
- 9. The method of claim 7 wherein the emission control devices are three-way catalysts.
- 10. The method of claim 7 wherein the step of activating comprises controlling air/fuel ratio to operate one bank rich and one bank lean.
- 11. The method of claim 10 wherein the step of activating comprises controlling ignition timing for the lean bank by retarding ignition timing from MBT timing.
- 12. A system for controlling an internal combustion engine having a plurality of cylinders, at least some of which are selectively deactivated in a variable displacement operating mode, the system comprising:first and second upstream emission control devices; at least a third emission control device positioned downstream relative to both said first and second upstream emission control devices, said third downstream emission control device being a shared emission control device to said upstream emission control devices; and an engine controller for monitoring temperature of at least one of the emission control devices including determining temperature of the third emission control device, and controlling activation/deactivation of at least one cylinder to manage temperature of the at least one emission control device.
- 13. The system of claim 12 wherein the engine controller monitors temperature of the at least one emission control device using a temperature model of the emission control device.
- 14. The system of claim 12 wherein the emission control devices comprise three-way catalysts.
