Claims
- 1. An inorganic liquid of hybrid composition or an inorganic glass of hybrid composition, the composition comprising:
(a) an inorganic component; and (b) a template component, wherein the inorganic component and the template component are present in the composition in a ratio that provides an intermediate range structural order to the composition.
- 2. The composition of claim 1, further defined as a glass.
- 3. The composition of claim 1, further defined as a liquid crystal.
- 4. The composition of claim 1, wherein the inorganic component further comprises a metal.
- 5. The composition of claim 4, further comprising a metal halide.
- 6. The composition of claim 5, wherein the metal is selected from the group consisting of Al, Mn, Fe, Co, Ni, Cu, Cd, Zn and combinations thereof.
- 7. The composition of claim 5, wherein a halogen is selected from the group consisting of F, Cl, Br, I and combinations thereof.
- 8. The composition of claim 7, further comprising the formula:
- 9. The composition of claim 1, wherein the template component is selected from the group consisting of an organic molecule or ion, a surfactant, an alkali metal cation, an alkaline earth metal cation, a clay, a nano-tube, a carbon fiber, a ceramic, and combinations thereof.
- 10. The composition of claim 9, wherein the surfactant further comprises an unsubstituted branched or unbranched C1-20-alkyl, a substituted branched or unbranched C1-20-alkyl, an unsubstituted branched or unbranched C1-20-alkenyl, a substituted branched and unbranched C1-20-alkenyls, an unsubstituted branched or unbranched C1-20-alkynyls, a substituted branched or unbranched C1-20-alkynyls, substituted, unsubstituted, or multiple ring aryl groups, or combinations thereof.
- 11. The composition of claim 10, wherein the surfactant further comprises a chain length of C8 to C18.
- 12. The composition of claim 11, wherein the surfactant further comprises a nitrogen substituent.
- 13. The composition of claim 1, wherein the ratio further comprises a greater mole percent of the inorganic component as compared to the template component to thereby provide an inorganic hybrid composition that is rich in the inorganic component.
- 14. The composition of claim 1, further comprising a polar solvent.
- 15. The composition of claim 14, wherein the polar solvent is water, acetone, methanol or a combination thereof.
- 16. The composition of claim 1, further comprising a macroscopic characteristic selected from the group consisting of a magnetic characteristic, an optical characteristic, a conductive characteristic, a catalytic characteristic, a luminescent characteristic, and combinations thereof.
- 17. A metallotropic liquid crystalline composition comprising:
(a) an inorganic component; and (b) a template component, wherein the metal and the template component are present in the composition in a ratio that provides an intermediate range structural order to the composition.
- 18. The composition of claim 17, wherein the inorganic component is a metal.
- 19. The composition of claim 18, wherein the metal is selected from the group consisting of Al, Mn, Fe, Co, Ni, Cu, Cd, Zn and combinations thereof.
- 20. The composition of claim 17, further comprising a metal halide.
- 21. The composition of claim 20, wherein a halogen is selected from the group consisting of F, Cl, Br, I, and combinations thereof.
- 22. The composition of claim 17, wherein the template component is selected from the group consisting of an organic molecule or ion, a surfactant, an alkali metal cation, an alkaline earth metal cation, a clay, a nano-tube, a carbon fiber, a ceramic, and combinations thereof.
- 23. The composition of claim 22, wherein the surfactant further comprises an unsubstituted branched or unbranched C1-20-alkyl, a substituted branched or unbranched C1-20-alkyl, an unsubstituted branched or unbranched C1-20-alkenyl, a substituted branched and unbranched C1-20-alkenyls, an unsubstituted branched or unbranched C1-20-alkynyls, a substituted branched or unbranched C1-20-alkynyls, substituted, unsubstituted, or multiple ring aryl groups, or combinations thereof.
- 24. The composition of claim 23, wherein the surfactant further comprises a chain length of C8 to C18.
- 25. The composition of claim 23, wherein the surfactant further comprises a nitrogen substituent.
- 26. The composition of claim 25, further comprising a divalent metal halide and a surfactant template selected from the group consisting of ((CH3)3N(CH2)nCH3)+, n=8-18; ((CH3)2N((CH2)nCH3)2)+, n=8-18; and (C5H5N(CH2)nCH3)+, n=8-18.
- 27. The composition of claim 21, wherein the metal halide is ZnX2 where X=Cl or Br, and the composition further comprises from about 0.01 to about 90 mole percent ZnX2.
- 28. The composition of claim 27, further comprising at least about 45 mole percent ZnX2, and wherein the template component further comprises up to about 5 mole percent of ((CH3)3NH]X, X=Cl or Br.
- 29. The composition of claim 21, wherein the metal halide is CdX2 where X=Cl or Br, and the composition further comprises from about 0.01 to about 60 mole percent CdX2.
- 30. The composition of claim 21, wherein the metal halide is CuX2 where X=Cl or Br, and the composition further comprises from about 0.01 to about 75 mole percent CuX2.
- 31. The composition of claim 21, wherein the metal halide is MX2 where M=MnII, FeII, CoII or NiII and X=Cl or Br, and the composition further comprises 50 mole percent MX2.
- 31. The composition of claim 17, wherein the ratio further comprises a greater mole percent of the inorganic component as compared to the template component to thereby provide an inorganic hybrid composition that is rich in the inorganic component.
- 32. The composition of claim 17, further comprising a polar solvent.
- 33. The composition of claim 32, wherein the polar solvent is water, acetone, methanol or a combination thereof.
- 34. The composition of claim 17, further comprising a macroscopic characteristic selected from the group consisting of a magnetic characteristic, an optical characteristic, a conductive characteristic, a catalytic characteristic, a luminescent characteristic, and combinations thereof.
- 35. A metallotropic glass composition comprising:
(a) an inorganic component; and (b) a template component, wherein the inorganic component and the template component are present in the composition in a ratio that provides an intermediate range structural order to the composition.
- 36. The composition of claim 35, wherein the metal is selected from the group consisting of Al, Mn, Fe, Co, Ni, Cu, Cd, Zn and combinations thereof.
- 37. The composition of claim 35, further comprising a metal halide.
- 38. The composition of claim 37, wherein a halogen is selected from the group consisting of F, Cl, Br, I, and combinations thereof.
- 39. The composition of claim 35, wherein the template component is selected from the group consisting of an organic molecule or ion, a surfactant, an alkali metal cation, an alkaline earth metal cation, a clay, a nano-tube, a carbon fiber, a ceramic, and combinations thereof.
- 40. The composition of claim 39, wherein the surfactant further comprises an unsubstituted branched or unbranched C1-20-alkyl, a substituted branched or unbranched C1-20-alkyl, an unsubstituted branched or unbranched C1-20-alkenyl, a substituted branched and unbranched C1-20-alkenyls, an unsubstituted branched or unbranched C1-20-alkynyls, a substituted branched or unbranched C1-20-alkynyls, substituted, unsubstituted, or multiple ring aryl groups, or combinations thereof.
- 41. The composition of claim 40, wherein the surfactant further comprises a chain length of C8 to C18.
- 42. The composition of claim 39, wherein the surfactant further comprises a nitrogen substituent.
- 43. The composition of claim 35, wherein the ratio further comprises a greater proportion of the inorganic component as compared to the template component to thereby provide a metallotropic glass composition that is rich in the inorganic component.
- 44. A method of preparing an inorganic liquid or glass that is a hybrid material comprising an inorganic component and an organic component that together exhibit an intermediate range structural order, the method comprising:
(a) providing an inorganic component; (b) providing a template component; and (c) mixing the inorganic and the template components at a ratio that provides an intermediate range structural order, whereby an inorganic hybrid material having an intermediate range structural order is produced.
- 45. The method of claim 44, wherein the ratio further comprises a greater mole percent of the inorganic component as compared to the template component to thereby provide an inorganic hybrid material that is rich in the inorganic component.
- 46. The method of claim 44, wherein the inorganic component further comprises a metal.
- 47. The method of claim 46, wherein the metal is selected from the group consisting of Al, Mn, Fe, Co, Ni, Cu, Cd, Zn and combinations thereof.
- 48. The method of claim 46, wherein the inorganic component further comprises a metal halide.
- 49. The method of claim 48, wherein a halogen is selected from the group consisting of F, Cl, Br, I, and combinations thereof.
- 50. The method of claim 48, wherein the metal halide further comprises the formula:
- 51. The method of claim 49, wherein the metal is zinc and the halide is chloride or bromide and the zinc is present in the inorganic component in an amount ranging from about 0.01 to about 90 mole percent.
- 52. The method of claim 49, wherein the metal is cadmium and the halide is chloride or bromide and the cadmium is present in the inorganic component in an amount ranging from about 0.01 to about 60 mole percent.
- 53. The method of claim 49, wherein the metal is copper and the halide is chloride or bromide and the copper is present in the inorganic component in an amount ranging from about 0.01 to about 75 mole percent.
- 54. The method of claim 49, wherein the metal halide is MX2 where M=MnII, FeII, CoII or NiII and X=Cl or Br, and the composition further comprises 50 mole percent MX2.
- 55. The method of claim 44, wherein the template component is selected from the group consisting of an organic molecule or ion, a surfactant, an alkali metal cation, an alkaline earth metal cation, a clay, a nano-tube, a carbon fiber, a ceramic, and combinations thereof.
- 56. The method of claim 55, wherein the surfactant further comprises an unsubstituted branched or unbranched C1-20-alkyl, a substituted branched or unbranched C1-20-alkyl, an unsubstituted branched or unbranched C1-20-alkenyl, a substituted branched and unbranched C1-20-alkenyls, an unsubstituted branched or unbranched C1-20-alkynyls, a substituted branched or unbranched C1-20-alkynyls, substituted, unsubstituted, or multiple ring aryl groups, or combinations thereof.
- 57. The method of claim 56, wherein the surfactant further comprises a chain length of C8 to C18.
- 58. The method of claim 56, wherein the surfactant further comprises a nitrogen substituent.
- 59. The method of claim 44, wherein the inorganic hybrid material is a glass.
- 60. The method of claim 44, wherein the inorganic hybrid material is a liquid crystalline material.
- 61. The method of claim 44, wherein the mixing of the inorganic component and the template component further comprises melting the mixture or further comprises melting the inorganic component, melting the template component and mixing the melts.
- 62. The method of claim 44, wherein the mixing of the inorganic component and the template component further comprises mixing the inorganic component and the template material in a solvent and evaporating the solvent.
- 63. The method of claim 44, further comprising adding a polar solvent to the mixing of the inorganic component and the template component.
- 64. The method of claim 63, wherein the polar solvent is water, acetone, methanol or combinations thereof.
