Claims
- 1. A terminal assembly for use in transmitting differential signal between two electronic components, comprising:
at least two pairs of conductive, differential signal terminals; an insulative support formed from a dielectric material and supporting the pairs of terminals in an arrangement where the two differential signal terminal pairs are aligned together in the support, the support having a plurality of distinct sides; said terminals each including tail portions that are exposed along a first one of the support sides for connection to traces on a circuit board, contact portions that are exposed along a second side of said support sides, body portions interconnecting the tail and contact portions together and defining a signal path through said support, said support including a skeletal framework which spaces terminals of each differential signal pair apart from each other and which aligns said terminals of said differential signal pairs with each other, the skeletal framework including at least one slot disposed in one of said first and second support sides, the slot extending in a preselected distance into said support, said slot partially separating said differential signal terminal pairs from each other within said support.
- 2. The terminal assembly of claim 1, wherein said skeletal framework includes a plurality of openings defined therein that expose portions of said terminal body portions, the openings being aligned with said terminal body portions in a path between said terminal tail and contact portions.
- 3. The terminal assembly of claim 2, wherein said support first and second sides are spaced apart from each other and extend parallel to each other, and said terminal body portions extend linearly within said support between said terminal tail and contact portions.
- 4. The terminal assembly of claim 2, wherein said openings expose said terminal body portions to air for influencing impedance of said differential signal terminal pairs.
- 5. The terminal assembly of claim 1, wherein said skeletal framework includes a pair of interengaging subframes, each subframe supporting one terminal of each of said differential signal terminal pairs, the terminals being partially embedded in said subframe, whereby when said two subframes are interengaged, the terminals of each of said differential signal terminal pairs are spaced apart from each other within said support and are separated by said dielectric material.
- 6. The terminal assembly of claim 5, wherein one of said subframes includes a web portion that includes at least one recess and the other of said subframes includes a web portion that includes a post that is received within said recess.
- 7. The terminal assembly of claim 5, wherein said support includes a plurality of interference members projecting out from said support, for engaging opposing walls of a connector into which said terminal assembly may be inserted.
- 8. The terminal assembly of claim 2, wherein said support first and second sides are transverse to each other and said terminals follow a general L-shaped path between said tail and contact portions.
- 9. The terminal assembly of claim 8, wherein said support includes a pair of slots disposed between said terminal pairs and extending toward each other from said support first and second sides, the slots being spaced apart from each other by the support web portion.
- 10. The terminal assembly of claim 8, wherein said support includes first and second interengaging halves, the first half supporting one terminal of each of said terminal pairs and the second half supporting the other terminal of each of said terminal pairs.
- 11. The terminal assembly of claim 9, wherein said support halves include means for interengaging each other, including a recess disposed on said first support half and a post disposed on said second support half, said recess and post being aligned with each other and disposed on said support in said area separating said slots from each other.
- 12. The terminal assembly of claim 1, wherein said terminal contact portions of each of said differential signal terminal pair have the same length.
- 13. The terminal assembly of claim 1, wherein the terminal contact portions of a first pair of said differential signal terminal pairs has a first length and the terminal contact portions of the second pair of said differential signal terminal pairs has a second length and the first and second length are different.
- 14. The terminal assembly of claim 1, wherein said contact portions extend out from said support second side and are spaced apart from each other by an intervening space.
- 15. The terminal assembly of claim 1, wherein said support includes insulative contact blade portions extending along said support second face, said terminal contact portions extending along the contact blade portions.
- 16. A terminal assembly for insertion into a differential signal connector, the connector housing including a plurality of terminal-receiving passages disposed therein, the terminal assembly comprising:
a plurality of conductive terminals, the terminals being arranged in a vertical column having at least two rows of terminals, each terminal row including a differential signal terminal pair, the terminals of each terminal pair being spaced apart from each other and said terminal pairs being spaced apart from each other; each of the terminals having a tail portion for terminating to a circuit board, a contact portion for mating with an opposing terminal of an opposing connector and a body portion interconnecting the tail and contact portions together, each of said terminals following a distinct path between said tail and contact portions; and an insulative support frame that supports said terminals in said column and row arrangement, the support frame having a body portion defined by a plurality of distinct sides, said terminal contact portions extending outwardly along a first side of said support frame, said terminal tail portions extending outwardly along a second side of said support frame, the support frame having plurality of slots disposed therein that extend inwardly from said support first and second sides, parallel to said terminal contact and tail portions, said slots extending between adjacent terminal pairs and receiving portions of the connector housing therein when said terminal assembly is inserted into said connector housing.
- 17. The terminal assembly of claim 16, wherein said support frame is formed from a dielectric material and wherein said terminals are partially encapsulated within said support frame, and said support frame has a plurality of openings disposed therein which expose portions of said terminal body portions to the exterior.
- 18. The terminal assembly of claim 17, wherein said openings are disposed on opposite sides of said support frame.
- 19. The terminal assembly of claim 17, wherein said support frame includes two interengaging support frame halves, each of the support frame halves containing a single column of terminals.
- 20. The terminal assembly of claim 16, wherein said tail portions include compliant pins of the eye-of-needle style.
- 21. The terminal assembly of claim 20, wherein said contact portions also include compliant pins of the eye-of-needle style.
- 22. The terminal assembly of claim 19, wherein said support frame includes at least one interior web portion that separates said differential signal terminal pairs from each other, each of said support frame halves including half web portions that include a means for joining said half web portions together to form said support web portion.
- 23. The terminal assembly of claim 22, wherein said half web portion joining means includes complimentary shaped post and recesses.
