Claims
- 1. A terminal for reading indicia having portions of different light reflectivity, comprising:
- a) a hand-held housing having a window;
- b) a scan module within the housing for electro-optically scanning the indicia through the window, said scan module including
- i) a base,
- ii) a first circuit board mounted generally orthogonal to the base and at one end of the base,
- iii) a first circuit mounted on the first circuit board,
- iv) a second circuit board mounted generally orthogonal to the first circuit board and parallel to the base, and
- v) a second circuit mounted on the second circuit board, and electrically connected to the first circuit;
- c) an initiator on the housing for initiating the scanning of the indicia;
- d) a keyboard on the housing for manually entering information to the scan module; and
- e) a display on the housing for displaying data.
- 2. The terminal according to claim 1, wherein the module includes a scanning component, and an oscillator for oscillating the scanning component.
- 3. The terminal according to claim 2, wherein the oscillator includes first and second magnets, one of which is a permanent magnet and the other of which is an electromagnet to which an alternating drive signal is applied.
- 4. The terminal according to claim 2; and further comprising flexible planar springs for mounting the scanning component for oscillation.
- 5. The terminal according to claim 1, wherein the module includes a light source for emitting a light beam for reflection from the indicia, and a detector for detecting light reflected from the indicia.
- 6. The terminal according to claim 5, wherein the first circuit includes a drive circuit for producing a signal to drive the light source.
- 7. The terminal according to claim 5, wherein the second circuit includes an application specific integrated circuit for producing signals to drive the light source and for processing electrical signals produced by the detector.
- 8. The terminal according to claim 5, wherein said detector is stationarily mounted on the base.
- 9. The terminal according to claim 5; and further comprising an electrical cable connecting the first and second circuits to each other, wherein the first and second circuits operate together to drive the source and to process electrical signals produced by the detector.
- 10. The terminal according to claim 1, wherein (i) said indicia has bar/space widths in the range of 5.5 to 7.5 mils and is scanned from a distance of 6.6 to 12.75 inches or (ii) said indicia has bar/space widths of over 10 mils and is scanned from a distance of 12.75 to 68 inches.
- 11. The terminal according to claim 1, wherein the housing has an enlarged head portion in which the scan module is accommodated.
- 12. The terminal according to claim 1, wherein the initiator is a manually actuatable trigger mounted at a side of the housing.
- 13. The terminal according to claim 1, wherein the keyboard and the display are combined in a touch screen.
- 14. The terminal according to claim 11, wherein the housing has a generally parallelepiped main portion adjacent the head portion, and wherein the keyboard is located on the main portion.
