Claims
- 1. A method of making an insect barrier comprising the following steps:
- a. mixing a low volatility insecticide with a polymer having a high or medium density, as a first polymer;
- b. mixing a higher volatility insecticide with a polymer having a low density as a second polymer;
- c. combining the first and second polymers into a shaped controlled release device.
- 2. The method of claim 1 wherein the step of incorporating an insecticide with a polymer includes adding a filler.
- 3. The method of claim 2, wherein said filler is carbon black in an amount to make a friable mixture of carbon black and insecticide.
- 4. The method as recited in claim 1, wherein said controlled release device is selected from the group of sheet, pellet, mesh and combinations thereof.
- 5. The method of claim 1 wherein the low vapor pressure insecticide is selected from the group consisting of lambdacyhalthrin, and permethrin.
- 6. The method of claim 5, wherein the polymer having a high or medium density is selected from the group consisting of polyurethane, high density polyethylene and combinations thereof.
- 7. The method as recited in claim 1, wherein said amount of said insecticide is at least 1 wt %.
- 8. The method as recited in claim 7, wherein said amount is at least 5 wt %.
- 9. An apparatus for repelling boring insects, comprising;
- (a) a first polymer having a high or medium density polymer incorporated with a low volatility insecticide; and
- (b) a second polymer having a low density polymer incorporated with a higher volatility insecticide.
- 10. The apparatus as recited in claim 9, wherein said high or medium density polymer is selected from the group of polyurethane, high density polyethylene and polypropylene.
- 11. The apparatus as recited in claim 9, wherein said low volatility insecticide is selected from the group of permethrin or lambdacyhalthrin.
- 12. The apparatus as recited in claim 9, wherein said low density polymer is selected from the group of ethylene vinyl acetate, low density polyethelene, and combinations thereof.
- 13. The apparatus as recited in claim 9, wherein said higher volatility insecticide is selected from the group consisting of pyrethrin and synthetic pyrethroid.
- 14. The apparatus as recited in claim 13, wherein said synthetic pyrethroid is tefluthrin.
