Claims
- 1. A method of evaluating designated responses to a series of questions, comprising:
- forming on a surface of a markable sheet a number of response mark guides, whereby responses to the series of questions can be designated by placing marks on and within selected ones of the response mark guides;
- arranging the response mark guides at certain positions on said sheet to define separate arrays of response mark guides with each array having a predetermined reference configuration in the form of a clock face;
- associating each of the response mark guides of each array with a different response in accordance with a position of each response mark guide in said reference configuration;
- selecting a certain response key for a correct response; and
- evaluating the designated responses by interpreting marks placed on said sheet in accordance with the selected response key.
- 2. The method according to claim 1, wherein said associating step includes associating each of the response mark guides of each array with a different numeral including the digits 0 to 9.
- 3. The method according to claim 1, wherein said arranging step includes the response mark guides on the sheet so that they essentially conform in position to response mark guides printed in a rectangular array of a predetermined density.
- 4. The method according to claim 3, wherein said evaluating step includes scanning the sheet with a mark-sense scanner after response marks are placed on or within selected ones of the response mark guides.
- 5. A method of evaluating designated responses to a series of questions, comprising:
- setting a response key and layout data for a scannable marked form sheet to be evaluated by a computer controlled printer and scanner system;
- printing by said computer controlled system a scannable form sheet having response mark guides, whereby responses to the series of questions can be designated by placing marks on and within selected ones of the response mark guides;
- arranging the response mark guides at predetermined positions on said scannable form sheet to define separate arrays of response mark guides with each array serving to enable a selected response to be provided, the response mark guides of each array each having a defined position with respect to a predetermined reference symbol;
- storing in said computer controlled system the positions of the response mark guides corresponding to the predetermined positions on the scannable form sheet representing certain kinds of responses to said questions for the response key;
- scanning the scannable form sheet after the responses to said questions are marked by a respondent, and detecting the positions of said responses placed on and within the response mark guides in accordance with said layout data;
- comparing the positions of the detected responses with the positions stored in said storing step; and
- evaluating the responses marked by the respondent on said form based on results of said comparing step.
- 6. The method of claim 5, wherein said setting step includes encoding on said scannable form certain associated information.
- 7. The method of claim 6, wherein said encoding step is carried out by printing of flag indicia within a predetermined area of the scannable form sheet.
- 8. The method of claim 5, wherein said evaluating step includes providing a grade.
- 9. A method of evaluating designated data character responses to a series of questions on a scannable sheet, comprising:
- forming on a surface of scannable sheet a number of response mark guides, whereby data characters can be designated by placing marks on and within selected ones of the response mark guides;
- arranging the response mark guides at certain positions on said sheet to define separate arrays of response mark guides with each array serving to enable a selected data character to be provided, the response mark guides of each array each having a defined position with respect to a predetermined reference symbol;
- associating each of the response mark guides of each array with a different data character in accordance with the position of each response mark guide relative to said reference symbol; and
- interpreting marks placed on said sheet by identifying each mark with a certain data character according to the positions of the marks on and within said response mark guides.
- 10. The method of claim 9, wherein said arranging step includes defining separate arrays of response mark guides in the form of at least partly rectangular clock faces.
- 11. The method according to claim 9, wherein said associating step includes associating each of the response mark guides of each array with a different numeral including the digits 0 to 9.
- 12. The method of claim 9, wherein said arranging step includes arranging the response mark guides on the sheet so that they essentially conform in position to response mark guides printed in a rectangular array of a predetermined density.
- 13. The method of claim 9, wherein said interpreting step includes scanning the sheet with a mark-sense scanner after response marks are placed on and within selected ones of the response mark guides by a respondent.
