Claims
- 1. A process for producing a textile substrate suitable for printing on, comprising the step of applying to the surface of a textile substrate a coating composition containing a coating agent selected from the group consisting of (a) an azetidinium polymer, (b) a guanidine polymer, (c) a mixture of an azetidinium polymer and a guanidine polymer, and (d) a copolymer of an azetidinium monomer and a guanidine monomer.
- 2. The process of claim 1, wherein the coating agent comprises an azetidinium polymer.
- 3. The process of claim 2, wherein the azetidinium polymer is a homopolymer.
- 4. The process of claim 2, wherein the azetidinium polymer is a copolymer.
- 5. The process of claim 4, wherein the azetidinium polymer comprises aminoamide azetidinium.
- 6. The process of claim 2, wherein the azetidinium polymer is comprised of monomer units having the structural formula
- 7. The process of claim 6, wherein, in the azetidinium polymer, R1 and R2 are methylene, X− is selected from the group consisting of halide, acetate, methane sulfonate, succinate, citrate, malonate, fumarate, oxalate and hydrogen sulfate, Y1 and Y3 are independently hydrogen or lower alkyl, and Y2 is hydrogen or hydroxyl.
- 8. The process of claim 7, wherein, in the azetidinium polymer, Y1 and Y3 are hydrogen and Y2 is hydroxyl.
- 9. The process of claim 1, wherein the coating agent comprises a guanidine polymer.
- 10. The process of claim 9, wherein the guanidine polymer is a homopolymer.
- 11. The process of claim 9, wherein the guanidine polymer is a copolymer.
- 12. The process of claim 9, wherein the guanidine polymer is comprised of monomer units having the structural formula
- 13. The process of claim 12, wherein, in the guanidine polymer, R3 and R4 are hydrogen.
- 14. The process of claim 9, wherein the guanidine polymer is comprised of monomer units having the structural formula
- 15. The process of claim 14, wherein, in the guanidine polymer, R3 and R4 are hydrogen.
- 16. The process of claim 1, wherein the coating agent comprises a mixture of an azetidinium polymer and a guanidine polymer.
- 17. The process of claim 16, wherein the azetidinium polymer is comprised of monomer units having the structural formula
- 18. The process of claim 9, wherein the guanidine polymer is comprised of monomer units having the structural formula
- 19. The process of claim 18, wherein, in the guanidine polymer, R3 and R4 are hydrogen.
- 20. The process of claim 17, wherein the guanidine polymer is comprised of monomer units having the structural formula
- 21. The process of claim 20, wherein, in the guanidine polymer, R3 and R4 are hydrogen.
- 22. The process of claim 17, wherein, in the azetidinium polymer, R1 and R2 are methylene, X− is selected from the group consisting of halide, acetate, methane sulfonate, succinate, citrate, malonate, fumarate, oxalate and hydrogen sulfate, Y2 and Y3 are independently hydrogen or lower alkyl, and Y2 is hydrogen or hydroxyl.
- 23. The process of claim 22, wherein the guanidine polymer is comprised of monomer units having the structural formula
- 24. The process of claim 23, wherein, in the guanidine polymer, R3 and R4 are hydrogen.
- 25. The process of claim 22, wherein the guanidine polymer is comprised of monomer units having the structural formula
- 26. The process of claim 25, wherein, in the guanidine polymer, R3 and R4 are hydrogen.
- 27. The process of claim 22, wherein, in the azetidinium polymer, Y1 and Y3 are hydrogen and Y2 is hydroxyl.
- 28. The process of claim 27, wherein the guanidine polymer is comprised of monomer units having the structural formula
- 29. The process of claim 28, wherein, in the guanidine polymer, R3 and R4 are hydrogen.
- 30. The process of claim 27, wherein the guanidine polymer is comprised of monomer units having the structural formula
- 31. The process of claim 30, wherein, in the guanidine polymer, R3 and R4 are hydrogen.
- 32. The process of claim 1, wherein the coating agent is comprised of a copolymer of an azetidinium monomer unit and a guanidine monomer unit.
- 33. The process of claim 32, wherein the azetidinium monomer unit has the structural formula
- 34. The process of claim 33, wherein, in the azetidinium monomer unit, R1 and R2 are methylene, X− is selected from the group consisting of halide, acetate, methane sulfonate, succinate, citrate, malonate, fumarate, oxalate and hydrogen sulfate, Y1 and Y3 are independently hydrogen or lower alkyl, and Y2 is hydrogen or hydroxyl.
- 35. The process of claim 1, wherein the coating composition is aqueous.
- 36. The process of claim 1, wherein the coating composition further comprises a colorant.
- 37. The process of claim 36, wherein the colorant is a pigment.
- 38. The process of claim 37, wherein the pigment is selected from the group consisting of silica, titanium dioxide and calcium carbonate.
- 39. The process of claim 36, wherein the colorant is a dye.
- 40. The process of claim 1, wherein the coating composition is applied in an amount that results in a coating representing approximately 0.5 wt. % to 20 wt. % of the textile substrate after drying.
- 41. The process of claim 1, wherein the coating agent represents approximately 1 wt. % to 100 wt. % of the coating composition, based upon total solids weight of the coating composition after drying.
- 42. A textile substrate treated by the process of claim 1.
- 43. A textile substrate treated by the process of claim 2.
- 44. A textile substrate treated by the process of claim 9.
- 45. A textile substrate treated by the process of claim 16.
- 46. A textile substrate treated by the process of claim 32.
- 47. A textile coating composition comprising an aqueous formulation of:
a coating agent selected from the group consisting of (a) an azetidinium polymer, (b) a guanidine polymer, (c) a mixture of an azetidinium polymer and a guanidine polymer, and (d) a copolymer of an azetidinium monomer and a guanidine monomer; an optical brightener; and optionally, a film-forming binder.
- 48. The composition of claim 47, further including a fabric softener.
- 49. The composition of claim 48 wherein the coating agent represents approximately 50t.% to 95t.% of the coating composition after drying on a substrate, the optical brightener and fabric softener each represent approximately 0.5 wt. % to 2.0 wt. % of the coating composition after drying on a substrate, and the film-forming binder represents up to approximately 40 wt. % of the composition after drying on a substrate.
- 50. The composition of claim 47, wherein the coating agent is an azetidinium polymer.
- 51. The composition of claim 47, wherein the coating agent is a guanidine polymer.
- 52. The composition of claim 47, wherein the coating agent comprises a mixture of an azetidinium polymer and a guanidine polymer.
- 53. The composition of claim 47, wherein the coating agent comprises a copolymer of an azetidinium monomer and a guanidine monomer.
- 54. The composition of claim 47, wherein the colorant is a pigment.
- 55. The composition of claim 54, wherein the pigment is selected from the group consisting of silica, titanium dioxide and calcium carbonate.
- 56. The composition of claim 47, wherein the colorant is a dye.
- 57. The composition of claim 47, further including a crosslinking agent.
- 58. The composition of claim 57, wherein the crosslinking agent is zirconium acetate.
- 59. The composition of claim 47, wherein the coating composition includes a film-forming binder.
- 60. The composition of claim 59, wherein the film-forming binder is selected from the group consisting of polysaccharides, polypeptides, synthetic vinyl polymers, and cationic film-forming binders.
- 61. The composition of claim 60, wherein the cationic film-forming binder is selected from the group consisting of quatemized vinyl pyrrolidone-dimethylaminoethyl-methacrylate copolymer, dimethylaminoethyl-methacrylate-co-methyl methacrylate, polydiallyldimethyl ammonium chloride and quatemized aminoacrylate polymers.
- 62. A method for providing a water-resistant printed image on a textile substrate, comprising:
applying to a textile substrate a coating composition comprised of a coating agent selected from the group consisting of (a) an azetidinium polymer, (b) a guanidine polymer, (c) a mixture of an azetidinium polymer and a guanidine polymer, and (d) a copolymer of an azetidinium monomer and a guanidine monomer, said applying producing a treated textile substrate; and applying a colorant composition to the treated textile substrate, wherein the colorant composition contains a reactive colorant having ionizable and/or nucleophilic groups capable of reacting with the coating agent.
- 63. A printed textile product prepared by the method of claim 62.
- 64. The printed textile product of claim 63, wherein the printed image is water-resistant and detergent-resistant.
