Claims
- 1. A method of audio recording, comprising the steps of:
- providing a channel of audio information suitable for serving as a source of side surround audio and upper surround audio;
- producing a pilot signal having a characteristic representative of a desired proportion of said channel which should be allotted to said side surround audio and said upper surround audio, wherein said pilot signal is a tone of predetermined frequency having an amplitude ranging from zero to a predetermined maximum value, wherein a zero level in said pilot signal represents a zero level of said upper surround audio and said predetermined minimum value of said pilot signal represents a zero level of said side surround audio and wherein a level of said pilot signal between zero and said predetermined maximum value represents a mixture of non-zero levels of both said side surround channel and said upper surround channel; and
- recording said pilot tone and said channel of audio.
- 2. The method of claim 1, further comprising the step of mixing said pilot signal with said channel prior to said recording step.
- 3. The method of claim 1, wherein said predetermined characteristic includes the amplitude of said pilot signal.
- 4. The method of claim 1, wherein said pilot signal is a tone of predetermined frequency.
- 5. An audio system, comprising:
- means for receiving a mixed signal including an audio signal mixed with first and second pilot signals;
- means for detecting a level of said first pilot signal;
- means for detecting a level of said second pilot signal;
- means for dividing said audio signal into first and second audio signals, said first audio signal having an amplitude related to said level of said first pilot signal and said second audio signal having an amplitude inversely related to said level of said first pilot signal;
- means for mixing said second audio signal with a third audio signal to produce a composite audio signal; and
- means for dividing said composite audio signal into first and second composite audio signals, said first composite audio signal having an amplitude related to said level of said second pilot signal and said second composite audio signal having an amplitude inversely related to said level of said second pilot signal.
- 6. The apparatus of claim 5, further comprising a filter for removing said pilot signal from said mixed signal to produce an audio signal.
- 7. The apparatus of claim 5, wherein said filter includes a low-pass filter.
- 8. The apparatus of claim 5, wherein said pilot signal includes a 19 Khz tone.
- 9. The apparatus of claim 5, further comprising a first amplifier for amplifying said first audio signal and a second amplifier for amplifying said second audio signal.
