Claims
- 1. An apparatus for remodeling a heart, comprising:
a first electrode positioned externally on a patient; a second electrode positioned externally on a patient; and a current generator electrically coupled to the first electrode and the second electrode, wherein the generator generates a current between the first electrode and the second electrode to confer a sub-threshold therapeutic stimulus on at least one of the heart and adjacent vasculature.
- 2. An apparatus, claim 1, further comprising:
at least one sensor; and a controller in communication with the sensor and regulating the current generator.
- 3. An apparatus, as in claim 2, wherein the sensor monitors the depolarization of the heart and the controller synchronizes the sub-threshold therapeutic electrical stimulus from the current generator with a cycle of the heart.
- 4. An apparatus, as in claim 3, wherein the controller synchronizes the sub-threshold therapeutic electrical stimulus with a refractory period of the cardiac cycle.
- 5. An apparatus, as in claim 2, wherein the at least one sensor monitors the field strength in or near the heart generated between the first electrode and the second electrode and the controller maintains the sub-threshold therapeutic electrical stimulus from the current generator below a depolarization threshold of the heart.
- 6. An apparatus, as in claim 1, wherein at least one of the first electrode and the second electrode is a patch electrode.
- 7. An apparatus, as in claim 2, wherein the sensor is positioned externally on the patient.
- 8. An apparatus, as in claim 2, wherein at least one of the sensor, the first electrode, and the second electrode is positioned within an esophagus of the patient.
- 9. An apparatus, as in claim 2, wherein the sensor is implanted within the patient.
- 10. An apparatus, as in claim 9, wherein the sensor is implanted within the heart.
- 11. An apparatus, as in claim 2, further comprising a cardiac defibrillator.
- 12. An apparatus, as in claim 2, further comprising a cardiac pacemaker.
- 13. An apparatus for remodeling a heart, comprising:
a first means for forming an electrical connection with a patient; a second means for forming an electrical connection with the patient; and a means for generating an electric current between the first means for forming an electrical connection and the second means for forming an electrical connection, wherein the means for generating an electric current generates a sub-threshold therapeutic stimulus passing between the first means for forming an electrical connection and the second means for forming an electrical connection to the heart of the patient.
- 14. A method for providing cardiac therapy, comprising:
sensing a cardiac cycle of a heart to determine a refractory period of the heart; and applying a stimulus to the heart during the refractory period, the heart positioned between a first external electrode and a second external electrode.
- 15. A method, as in claim 14, further comprising applying a sub-threshold stimulus to the heart during a non-refractory period.
- 16. A method, as in claim 15, further comprising measuring the field strength generated by applying the sub-threshold stimulus.
- 17. A method for providing cardiac therapy, comprising:
a step for sensing a cardiac cycle of a heart to determine a refractory period of the heart; and a step for applying a stimulus to the heart during the refractory period, the heart positioned between a first external electrode and a second external electrode.
- 18. A method for providing cardiac therapy, comprising:
applying a sub-threshold stimulus to the heart, the heart positioned between a first external electrode and a second external electrode; and measuring the field strength generated by applying the sub-threshold stimulus.
- 19. A method, as in claim 18, further comprising adjusting at least one parameter of the sub-threshold stimulus to maintain the sub-threshold stimulus below a depolarization threshold of the heart.
- 20. A method for providing cardiac therapy, comprising:
a step for applying a sub-threshold stimulus to the heart; and a step for measuring the field strength generated by applying the sub-threshold stimulus.
