Claims
- 1. A superalloy component having a thermal barrier coating system on a surface thereof, the thermal barrier coating system comprising:
- a bond coat deposited on the surface by air plasma spraying so as to have a surface roughness of about 200 to about 500.mu. pinch Ra;
- a metal completely diffused through the bond coat and, optionally, also into the surface of the superalloy component so as not to alter the surface roughness of the bond coat, the metal being chosen from the group consisting of platinum, palladium, hafnium, rhenium and rhodium; and
- a ceramic layer deposited on the bond coat by air plasma spraying.
- 2. A superalloy component as recited in claim 1, wherein the metal is platinum and is diffused into the surface of the superalloy component.
- 3. A superalloy component as recited in claim 1, wherein the bond coat is MCrAlY.
- 4. A superalloy component as recited in claim 1, wherein a continuous oxide layer is not present between the bond coat and the ceramic layer.
- 5. A nickel-base superalloy component having a thermal barrier coating system on a surface thereof, the thermal barrier coating system consisting essentially of:
- an NiCrAlY bond coat deposited on the surface by air plasma spraying so as to have a surface roughness of about 200 to about 500.mu. inch Ra;
- platinum completely diffused into the bond coat and into the surface of the superalloy component so as not to alter the surface roughness of the bond coat; and
- a layer of yttria-stabilized zirconia deposited on the bond coat by air plasma spraying.
