Claims
- 1. An apparatus for separating particles having different densities and different electrical potentials suspended in a medium comprising:
- a sedimentation column;
- means for introducing into said sedimentation column a medium containing particles of differing densities and differing electrical potentials suspended therein;
- means adjacent to said sedimentation column for producing a temperature differential between two portions of the medium contained in said sedimentation column, whereby a thermal convection counter stream is created;
- means for removing a fraction of medium which has undergone partial separation of particles according to density from said sedimentation column; and
- means for receiving said fraction of medium and for galvanically separating particles thereof according to differing electrical potentials.
- 2. An apparatus as recited in claim 1 wherein said means for galvanic separation comprises:
- an electrophoretic cell having a pair of electrodes contained in portions thereof;
- means for introducing into said electrophoretic cell the said fraction of medium from the sedimentation column; and
- means adjacent to each electrode for removing desired fractions of said medium from said electrophoretic cell.
- 3. An apparatus as recited in claim 2 further comprising a convection column communicating with said cell and disposed between said electrodes.
- 4. An apparatus as in claim 3 wherein said convection column comprises an upper portion and a lower portion, one of said upper or lower portions being of a smaller diameter than the other of said portions, and where the electrode containing portions of said electrophoretic cell communicate with the convection column between the upper and lower portions thereof.
- 5. An apparatus as recited in claim 3 further comprising means for producing a convection flow within said convection column.
- 6. An apparatus as recited in claim 5 wherein said convection column comprises an inlet means at one end thereof and an outlet means at the other end thereof, said apparatus further comprising a pump connected between said inlet means and said outlet means of said convection column so as to create a forced convection flow of medium through said column.
- 7. An apparatus as recited in claim 5 wherein said means for producing a convection flow within said convection column comprises means for producing a thermal convection in said column by causing one portion of the medium contained therein to be at a substantially different temperature than another portion of the medium contained therein thus producing a thermal convection circulation of the medium within the convection column.
- 8. An apparatus for separating particles having different densities and different electric potentials suspended in a medium comprising:
- a sedimentation column;
- means for introducing into said sedimentation column a medium containing particles of different density and electric potential suspended therein;
- means adjacent to said sedimentation column for producing a temperature differential between two portions of the medium contained in said sedimentation column whereby a thermal convection counter stream is created;
- an electrophoretic cell forming a part of said sedimentation column comprising two glass tubes each containing an electrode and each tube communicating with said column at a different vertical level thereof; and
- means for removing desired fractions of said medium from said sedimentation column and said electrode containing tubes.
- 9. An apparatus as recited in claim 1 further comprising means for determining variations in particle distribution within said sedimentation column.
- 10. An apparatus for separating particles of differing electrical potentials suspended in a medium comprising:
- an electrophoretic cell having a pair of electrodes contained therein;
- a convection column communicating with said cell and disposed between said electrodes;
- means for introducing into said electrophoretic cell a medium containing particles of differing electrical potential; and
- means adjacent to each of said electrodes for removing desired fractions of said medium from said electrophoretic cell.
- 11. An apparatus as recited in claim 10 wherein said convection column has one portion of a narrower diameter than another portion and further comprising a pump connected to said convection column for producing a forced convection circulation within said column due to the nonuniform diameter thereof.
- 12. An apparatus as recited in claim 10 further comprising means for producing a thermal convection circulation within said convection column.
