Claims
- 1. A thermal transfer medium which transfers images to a receiving substrate, the thermal transfer medium comprising:
a laminate comprising;
a substrate; and a first coating comprising an oil, a silicone polymer, or a combination thereof, which is liquid or paste at room temperature, positioned substantially on at least one surface of the substrate; and a functional layer positioned substantially on the first coating.
- 2. A thermal transfer medium according to claim 1, wherein the first coating further comprises a wax.
- 3. A thermal transfer medium according to claim 1, wherein the first coating further comprises a polymer having a sulfonic acid group or a salt thereof.
- 4. A thermal transfer medium according to claim 1, wherein the oil is a vegetable oil, a fatty oil, a mineral oil, a synthetic lubricating oil, or mixtures thereof.
- 5. A thermal transfer medium according to claim 4, wherein the vegetable oil is a linseed oil, a kaya oil, a safflower oil, a soybean oil, a Chinese tung oil, a sesame oil, a corn oil, a rapeseed oil, a rice bran oil, a cottonseed oil, an olive oil, a sasanqua oil, a tsubaki oil, a castor oil, a peanut oil, a palm oil, or a coconut oil; the fatty oil is a beef tallow, a hog fat, a mutton tallow, or a cacao butter; the mineral oil is a machine oil, an insulation oil, a turbine oil, a motor oil, a gear oil, a cutting oil, or a liquid paraffin; and the synthetic lubricating oil is a machine oil, an insulation oil, a turbine oil, a motor oil, a gear oil, a cutting oil, or a liquid paraffin.
- 6. A thermal transfer medium according to claim 2, wherein the oil is present in amount of 3-50 parts by weight to about 100 parts by weight of the wax-based composition.
- 7. A thermal transfer medium according to claim 1, further comprising a back layer positioned substantially on the substrate of the laminate on a side opposing the first coating.
- 8. A thermal transfer medium according to claim 2, wherein the wax is a petroleum wax, a vegetable wax, a mineral wax, an animal wax, a low molecular wax, or a mixture thereof.
- 9. A thermal transfer medium according to claim 1, wherein the first coating has protrusions with a length/width ratio of not less than 3 and at a density of not less than 20 protrusions/100 micrometer squared.
- 10. A thermal transfer medium according to claim 1, wherein the substrate of the laminate is a polyethylene terephthalate film.
- 11. A thermal transfer medium according to claim 1, wherein the first coating comprises the silicon polymer.
- 12. A thermal transfer medium according to claim 11, farther comprising a second coating comprising an oil, a silicon polymer, or combination thereof positioned substantially on at least one surface of the substrate.
- 13. A method for preparing a thermal transfer medium, comprising:
providing a substrate having a first side and a second side; coating the first and second sides of the substrate with a composition comprising a wax, an oil, a silicon polymer, or a combination thereof to form a first coating and a second coating; and applying a functional coat to either the first or second coating.
- 14. A thermal transfer medium according to claim 1, wherein the first coating is free of pigment.
- 15. A thermal transfer medium according to claim 12, wherein the second coating is positioned on the surface opposite the first coating.
