Claims
- 1. Homogeneous quartz glass fibers containing at least one of chromium and manganese in about 0.05 to 20% by weight of the SiO.sub.2 expressed as Cr.sub.2 O.sub.3 and Mn.sub.2 O.sub.3, and no more than traces of alkali and alkaline earth metal oxides, the glass being stable up to about 1400.degree. C. with a controlled tendency toward cristobalite formation up to an average crystallite size of about 100 to 500 A.
- 2. Crystalline cristobalite containing at least one of chromium and manganese in about 0.05 to 20% by weight of the SiO.sub.2 expressed as Cr.sub.2 O.sub.3 and Mn.sub.2 O.sub.3, and no more than traces of alkali and alkaline earth metal oxides, the cristobalite having an average crystallite size of about 100 to 500 A.
- 3. Cristobalite according to claim 2, wherein the chromium and manganese are present in about 0.1 to 10% by weight expressed as Cr.sub.2 O.sub.3 and Mn.sub.2 O.sub.3.
- 4. Crystalline cristobalite according to claim 2 in the form of fibers.
- 5. A high temperature-resistant molded structure containing quartz glass fibers according to claim 1.
- 6. A high temperature-resistant molded structure containing cristobalite according to claim 2.
- 7. A flameproof textile article made from quartz glass fibers according to claim 1.
- 8. A flameproof textile article made from cristobalite fibers according to claim 4.
- 9. A structure reinforced or insulated with quartz glass fibers according to claim 1.
- 10. A structure reinforced or insulated with cristobalite fibers according to claim 4.
