Claims
- 1. A method for constructing a support structure in a thermionic converter to support an emitter-holding spring structure on a housing, and to transfer heat between the spring structure and housing while electrically isolating the spring structure from the housing, comprising:
- forming a cavity in the front face of a metal main support that has an axis, with the cavity having walls extending in a forwardly-radially outward direction, but at an angle A less than 45.degree. from a direct radial direction;
- coating the walls of said cavity with a plurality of sublayers of ceramic, with first and last sublayers that include metal and ceramic and a middle sublayer substantially solely of ceramic, to form a ceramic layer;
- placing a metal spring-engaging element having a rear surface substantially conforming to the middle of the front surface of said ceramic layer, so said element rear surface lies on said ceramic layer, to form a sandwich of said ceramic layer between said main support and said element;
- hot pressing said sandwich to form a bond between said ceramic layer and said main support, and between said ceramic layer and said element;
- machining said hot pressed sandwich to form a forward surface of said ceramic layer even with adjacent forward surfaces of said main support and of said spring engaging element.
- 2. The method described in claim 1 wherein:
- said step of placing a spring-engaging element includes placing an upper blank that covers an entire face of said ceramic layer on said layer, and said step of machining includes machining said upper blank into the final shape of said spring-engaging element so it covers only the middle of said ceramic layer.
- 3. The method described in claim 1 wherein:
- said spring-engaging element has a substantially planar forward surface, and said step of machining including machining said ceramic layer and said main support substantially coplanar with said forward surface of said element.
- 4. The method described in claim 1 wherein:
- said spring-engaging element has a forwardly extending circular protrusion, and said spring structure includes a Belleville-type spring having a central hole; and including:
- projecting said protrusion into said central hole in said spring and welding said metal spring-engaging element to the portion of said spring that lies immediately around said central hole.
